Dyson are an utter rip off. I sympathise completely with you. Used to own one and I felt I’d have to do two rounds of the house to get it clean. Go for a Miele, they are cheaper and significantly better.

Henry has always been the best hoover in my eyes and I've used many over the years. However I admit that they are cumbersome and they do deliberately throw themselves over in a tantrum, grab the corners of walls to avoid their workload and talk shit about you behind your back all while having a very smug look on their stupid red faces. That being said I would also reccomend miele. Also very good quality but much less personality.

I have a Miele canister. Love it! We have a lot of hard surfaces (hard wood and tile). I got the extra large attachment for hard floors, but honestly the normal sized one it comes with would be sufficient.

I went sebo (E3) over miele due to: cheaper, better warranty, cheaper parts and repair, and sebo does one thing (make vacuums)... suprised theres no sebo dealer nearby, I recommend trying to fine one even if its a drive. Think of SEBO like volkswagen, and MIELE like BMW. the variety of responses here are proof positive of TRY BEFORE BUY I tried miele, sebo uprights, sebo felix, sebo canister. disliked the felix immediately upon trying, despite my mind leaning felix during the online research phase! I'm a total convert from upright to canister (or at least sebos version of it) but you need to assess if you can handle the quirks of a canister. downsides of a canister: 1) one more thing to keep track of (I got used to it fast, I just kick it around or pull it by the hose) 2) harder to store (pending a good solution to this...) 3) heavier to take up the stairs (but easier to actually vacuum said stairs) Upsides of the canister: 1) lighter IN HAND (the weight of the vacuum is supported by the floor, not your hand, in use). 2) cord rewind (wrapping up cords after a upright vacuum session sucks, the SEBO you just unplug and step on the retract button. 3) much easier to do top to bottom detail vacuuming (fans, vents, dusting, cabinets, walls, pictures, shelves, dusting), wand/hose mode reaches many more high places and without tipping over the upright. 4) easier to maneuver the power head. yes you gotta maneuver the canister into position, but once you do you can get that powerhead into alot more difficult to reach places (under beds, couches, rugs, tables). Easier to maneuver the canister than moving furniture. I'm over cordless due to wall to wall carpet, the time limit (good for quick pickups only), and I really dislike the cleaning/washing/emptying of bagless machines (which most cordless are). The whole reason I vacuum is to GET RID of dust, dirt and nastiness... why do I wanna go touching and breathing it later... in concentrated form, bathing in a big ol dust cloud?!

The general consensus here is that stick vacs as a whole aren't good. I think I'm inclined to agree when it comes to the absolute budget end of the spectrum like this. They won't perform and they won't last long. However I do genuinely think that stick vacs serve a purpose so I'm not against them like a lot of others on this sub. I have one that I use for quick pick ups and a quick run around every few days just to keep things looking ok. It is hugely convenient and my most used vacuum. But I have a corded canister and upright vacuum for deeper cleans every week or so. If I need to do a "proper" clean, the stick vac isn't coming out. You just have to go into the purchase knowing that even if you spend a little more, they're not going to be the longest lasting thing and won't perform as well as a half decent mains powered vacuum with a powered head, and in some cases they won't even perform as well as a canister with a turbo brush. Do you need the convenience of a stick vac? And what flooring do you mainly have?

Whilst it's less convenient, I find a canister vacuum the lightest to work with, although you do need to manoeuvre the machine around on the floor. With a canister you're barely holding any weight in your hand, it's all down on the floor. For above floor cleaning it's the best experience, and then for carpets and floors it's also easy as you're only pushing around the wand and floor head. In terms of lightweight sticks I don't know too many really I'm afraid. Sebo balance and Dyson V12 are both light. I can't speak to the longevity and quality of either though. I owned a V12 for a bit and it was light to use but I returned it as couldn't justify the expense for my daily runaround vacuum. I own a Levoit LVAC 200 which is...fine...but does a poor job on carpets, it will really only skim the surface. I replaced that with a Tineco Pure One Station Five. It's a bit heavier but it does the job and I picked it up new in box on eBay for about £125. The self empty station really helps and it does an ok job just keeping things looking clean. However I'm not sure how long it'll last as some of the joints are already getting creaky and loose.

If you get one with a turbo brush it'll be ok, not fantastic but it'll be better than just a straight suction head. I use a Miele canister with a turbo brush and it doesn't dig as deep as my upright with a powered head but it's fine. If you have low pile carpets then it should be ok. For me the convenience of a canister is the versatility of using it for above floor cleaning of upholstery, dusting etc...then also hard floors and area rugs/carpets. There are very limited canister vacuums available in the UK with powered heads, basically I think it's only Sebo who do them now - the K3, E3 and D4. However even the K3 is probably above your budget.

I have a bagged Miele cylinder as my main vacuum and a cordless bagless stick as a daily run around/quick pick up machine. There's no way the bagless stick could ever serve as my main vacuum. The Miele serves as a regular vacuum, DIY clean up machine, duster etc...has served me well for 9 years now and just keeps going and going. I cannot imagine the cordless stick I have lasting anything like as long - it's already feeling rickety and creaky after less than a year and I take good care of it. If you can afford it - Bagged corded vacuum for your main vacuum, cordless stick for a secondary run around.

I bought my Miele in 2004 and it's still running strong. Full disclosure: my husband broke the power head 10 years ago. I can't remember what he did except that it was a goofus move. I was really annoyed but I replaced the power head, kept the husband, and the vacuum has been running well ever since.

Don't buy the Miele! There little pieces break and to replace a single screw or tiny wheel is $55 each. I have a Sebo (German vacuum as well), which has never broken down piece by piece like the Miele. Highway robbery! The Miele vacuums are crap.

Congratulations and look forward to your follow up review after a whole house cleaning. Miele did a poor job assessing the US market for the Guard series. We get the same handle and hose as the previous models; not the new handle with controls released in Europe. They discontinued the SEB 236 power nozzle (LED light, lower profile), and only two models with a power nozzle. None of the Cat and Dog models have a power nozzle! The new Fiber TeQ All Floor attachment looks promising though and will probably be added to my C3's arsenal of tools.

Mieles are organized in 4 tiers: C1 Compact (entry level, smaller, for apartments & small homes), Guard M (replaces the previous C3, none of these have a power nozzle in the US Market), C3 (outgoing workhorse, find one this Black Friday, they are solid machines, the Kona, Cat & Dog, Marin, HomeCare E+ all have power nozzles), and the Guard L series. The black L models are suction only, the blue and titanium have power nozzles. The new Guard models that are labeled Cat & Dog do not have a power nozzle, instead they use an air driven turbo floor nozzle.

i use a steam vacuum(polti fav80) to mop my floors almost daily. U pour 0.5 litres of water, and i just mop everything with hot steam. After dry vacuuming with my miele ofc. But i dont vacuum everyday, like once in 4 days. But mopping everyday, cuz it literally takes 15 minutes to wipe the most common used surfaces. Usually it's bathrooms, doorway and kitchen. This routine significantly improved the allergy situation in our family.

Nicest home vacuum I’ve ever used was a Miele, but nothing compares to an industrial shop vac. This thing will suck up dust, hair and all of the contents of a 50L fish tank and not miss a beat. https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/v508

With carpets in the US, get one with a power nozzle. In this line up either the C1 Cat and Dog or C3 Cat and Dog are your best options. You stated the home is fairly big; the C3 Cat and Dog seems to be the ideal choice and the price is crazy good. In addition to a larger bag, the C3 cord is 24' feet, vs 18' in the C1.

Our Gen2 cleans well, as with a lot of cordless and bagless machines you need to clean the filters fairly regularly to maintain maximum efficiency - something they say they’ve addressed in the new one from the adverts - we use it as our go to cleaner for everyday hoovering. I wish we had got the version with the automatic hair removal as with girls in the house it does need regular detangling. It never sees to have problem picking up anything, crumbs, plastic diamonds from posters or larger things like M&Ms. That being said, we also have a Meile C3 cat and dog. At max power that thing would suck you into the bag like the scene out of alien where the alien gets sucked out of a tiny hole in the space ship.

Twenty seven years ago we purchased a Eureka canister that broke within a year. We ended up with a Miele. That thing still runs and I use it to clean my unfinished basement twice a year. My new Miele canister lives on my first floor for hardwood and my Sebo upright in s upstairs for carpeting. The Sebo is heavy but it’s a beast that will definitely outlive me. I now have two very cheap cordless vacuums that I use like Dustbusters. I’ve never understood why people buy that Dyson crap. There are complaints everywhere. There’s a difference between a company that spends money on engineering and quality and one that spend it on advertising. Dyson spends it on advertising. I’d vote for Miele everyday.

I have both Miele and Sebo canisters. The Miele SEB power nozzles handle thicker pile carpet better than the Sebo. I have a thick pile area rug in the master bedroom and the Sebo can't handle it. The Meile wand will go flat for under furniture cleaning, the elbow is angled more than the Sebo, in practice it isn't a significant difference. The Miele expendables (bags/filters) cost a bit more than Sebo and maintenance for a Miele will cost more compared to Sebo. The Sebo's break down much easier, quicker than a Meile. Which would I choose? I prefer my Miele C3 over the Sebo E3, but for whole house cleaning the Sebo D4 with the 40' cord and 1.5 gallon bag is the clear winner.

Ideally, you have a vacuum retailer near you so you can test drive these and get a good deal; Miele C3, these are being closed out and remaining stock is marked down. The Kona, Cat & Dog, Marin, and Homecare E+ are the C3s to look for. A Miele C1 Cat and Dog is also a solid choice. There are 2 brand new L1 Guard vacuums from Miele; the L1 (blue) and L1 Electro (titanium). All of these models but the Marin use the same SEB 228 power nozzle. The Marin gets a lower profile SEB 236 with an LED light. Only dealers can sell the Homecare and Electro models, these have 5 year warranty’s vs standard 3 year. Discounts for Black Friday are @20% for remaining C3s, at least 15% everything else. For Sebo, the E3 and K3 are excellent vacuums to also consider. German made like Miele, 10 year warranty’s if purchased from a dealer, and very reliable.

Well,I did it. I walked into a vacuum cleaner store and repair shop just to see this Sebo upright people refer to. I had already ordered a Kenmore BU4050 based on reviews although I have never seen one. I've been through every vacuum type imaginable in the last - ahem - 40 years. Starting with Electrolux canister on glider rails, a family hand-me-down. Dirt Devil tiny little canister. Hoover upright, Sanitaire commercial upright, Miele stick vac with removable handheld dustbuster thing, Miele canister. Had a Dyson V5 for when the canister was too heavy to pull out. Shark Navigator Pet upright - nimble, easy to use, went under bed - I liked it for a long time but slider for floor type change got stuck and it all those plastic parts got a little rickety. I learned: While cordless is quick and easy, it's also weak suction. Sanitair upright cleaned well on carpet but no accessories. Dysons are pretty colored plastic but all marketing, hurts my wrist, went through 2 batteries, just top heavy, and poor suction. Miele corded stick vacuum had very strong suction but was too heavy and center of mass is midway up so awkward unless you are very strong and was not self standing. Miele canister is great but all those accessories take up a lot of space and I'm over moving canisters around and banging the wall. Bagless was good as a novelty but so messy - the vacuum itself attracted dust and emptying always led to some dust on me. So I wanted a bagged, corded, self-standing, upright that had a low center of gravity, was nimble, no too heavy, and could go under the bed. Even though the sales guy was enthusiastic and informative but not pushy, the Sebo Felix sold itself. I bought the Sebo Felix even though I wasn't going there to buy, just see it. It does every thing I want and is much quieter. 10 year warranty, locally serviced by "Onyx" dealer \[that's what they call official dealers\], give loaner vacs if it takes more than 3 days. The store has been there 26 years, first the father and now the son owns it. They repair every brand of vacuum but only sell Sebo, Miele, and some in-the-wall systems. When I think of all the money I've spend on vacuums .... The good ones were Electrolux, Miele, Sanitaire, and for a while the Shark impressed me. Now I hope the Sebo will be my last vacuum. $700 US, price goes up $200 on September 25 due to tariffs. Dealer said he's sold 17 of them this month from special orders I will return the Kenmore BU4050 unopened when it arrives.

If you are future proofing your purchase, the D4 is ideal for the 3K+ home. In use, the D4 with its rotating hose is very manageable, not too different than a C3. Carrying the body alone upstairs is 15.9 pounds vs 12.5 for a C3. The Sebo wand and head is lighter than a C3 with a SEB 228 power nozzle.

The first things you'll notice about a modern vacuum is how quiet and compact they are compared to your Silver King. The Sebo D4 Onyx (or any Onyx version) opens the door to dealer-only extended warranty, pricing and accessory packages; 10 years motor/casing, parts and 7 year labor. Now that Miele rolled out their Guard series of vacuums, remaining stock of C3s are discounted. Standard warranty on a C3 is three years, but if there is a HomeCare edition (Red color), they are the Meile dealer-only line and warranted to 5 years. Only the entry level Miele's are Chinese, the majority are manufactured in Germany/Europe. The Guard Titanium is the current, dealer-only model from Miele. Both brands are BIFL, and the canisters are the GOAT for whole house cleaning (dusting, furniture, stairs, etc.). The D4 is designed for larger homes (40' cord, 1.5g bag). The Sebo E3 and Miele C3/Guard series are in the sweet spot for the average size home with a mix of bare floors and carpet. Models with a power nozzle will provide the most versatility to grow with your needs as you move from rentals to your final home. Get both brands and various models in your hands and test drive them in store. Black Friday is coming and these are always discounted this time of year.

I have Corgis and they shed fur as a hobby. Sebo or Miele with a power nozzle, not the entry level suction only machines. The ideal pair is a Sebo E3 canister and Felix upright. The Felix is my daily, the E3 is my weekly deep cleaner. There are clearance deals on the Miele C3s right now; look for the Cat & Dog, Marin and even the HomeCare+ canisters. The Miele power nozzles handle deep pile better than Sebo, otherwise the vacuums are tied for performance.

Only clean my own house, now. Let me sing the praises of my Miele C3! It’s about 7 years old. It was used daily in its early life because my dog was a heavy shedder. Also had another toy pup and 2 cats. There was a period where I was only vacuuming every other day, since my shedder had passed. 2024 was a bust health wise, so vacuuming was sporadic. When I was capable. March this year, the vacuuming was kickstarted hard due to carpet beetles. The bedrooms are dismantled, furniture moved, and vacuumed thoroughly once a week. With normal vacuuming at least every other day, sometimes daily. We have another shedder and 3 cats now. The vacuum cleaner is going strong. We do take care of filters and regular maintenance. When this one dies, I will buy another. It is one of the 3 vital appliances of keeping a clean house for me. I cringed when DH pushed going with a more expensive vacuum cleaner. The beater bar attaching to the handle sold me. Makes cleaning stairs a breeze. It’s been worth every penny!

Honestly if you’re willing to spend up to $600, it’s really worth the extra $250-300 to get a Miele or a Sebo. I spent way more that that in vacuums I hated (shark, Dyson, Hoover, etc) and finally broke down and got a Sebo canister. I wish I’d done it sooner. Even the ‘higher end’ shark and Dyson are child’s play compared to the good vacuums.

Definitely seek out and visit a Sebo/Miele dealer so they can demo all your options. You will likely get a discount and/or additional goodies thrown in (bags, filters, attachments). Whether it's Sebo or Miele, the lower cost units are suction only and won't clean your bedroom carpets effectively. Make sure your choice has a power nozzle (Sebo E3, K3, D4 or Miele C3 cat and dog). Miele just rolled out their replacement for the C3, called the Guard series. Unfortunately, there are only 2 models with the power nozzle, so if you are offered the newest model make sure it isn't suction only. Oddly, the new Miele Guard Cat and Dog does not include a power nozzle option! There are clearance deals on the previous generation Miele's, I'd go that way over the new/full markup models as these machines are excellent (Marin and the white Cat and Dog C3s are my favorites).

Both Sebo E3 and Miele C3 canister vacuums are top tier. Both use the same handheld turbo brush attachment (made by Wessel Werk) that is excellent for dog beds, upholstery, stairs. The Miele C3’s are discounted now as the new Guard series is replacing them. A Miele white dog and cat model or Marin navy blue model are probably the best pet vacuums you can get.
