My Kenmore canister vacuum was so versatile. It could easily get under the couch and coffee table, had all the attachments and the cord auto retracted into the vacuum. It was also a very simple design which meant that it lasted a really long time. I now have a Dyson and hate it.

Kenmore is your best bet. I’m not a fan of the 200 series (although it cleans well) it’s very compromised (short cord and hose). Look at the 400 series or 600 series if you can catch it on a sale. Or a Kenmore Intuition BU4050 if you like uprights.

Yep you’re on the right track. If you can get the carpet out first, you could do a simplicity Jill (it’s better built than the mighty mite) neither of these will do carpet well. Or if not grab a Kenmore 200/400 series.

Many brands have short warranties, that have nothing to do with reliability and build quality. That said, many brands offer a longer warranty to get you to buy them over better built machines. Think cars: Hyundai/Kia offer the longest warranties out there, yet they’re some of the least reliable cars with poor build quality. Meanwhile, Toyota/Lexus (and most other Japanese brands) offer 3 to 5 year warranties and are extremely reliable. Miele and Sebo are German made, much higher priced. Great machines and usually lighter. Kenmore is solid built, a bit heavier and that shows in a lower price. You’re getting a great vacuum for the price. I’m just trying to work with your budget. If you were pushing $1200 budget, I’d say go with a Sebo K3 Premium or Miele C3 Kona. You choose. Miele also doesn’t offer long warranties yet I’ve got 5 family members with Mieles that are 3 to 20 years old, no issues or complaints. Warranty? Irrelevant. Sebo owners will likely never utilize the warranty either. They’re well built in the first place.

If you can manage the $800ish mark a Sebo E3 Premium or Miele C1 Cat Dog are some of the best options you have. They are BIFL models and should last you 10-20 years as long as you treat them nicely and use genuine filters and bags. Understandably, if you can’t hit that price point the Kenmore 400/600 series canisters are good and around $300ish. The build quality isn’t as good as their German counterparts but they still perform quite well and again, if treated nicely, should last awhile. If you have a local Miele/Sebo dealer and want to go that route, check them out and take them for a spin. A canister is definitely the best option for you based on a 50/50 split.

I always recommend the 400 over the 600. The parts are all the same from the older kenmores so it makes finding parts way easier if ever need be. That said the 600 should still have the spot on the back of the canister where you can hang / dock the power head for storage with the hose and wand attached.

I do not recommend the eureka power speed. It does not have a legitimate filtration system and will blow dust right back into the air. Shark isn’t the most recommended machine on this market but some are far better than others. The Navigator Lift-Away NV350 series or NV360 (Walmart) are actually decent cleaners inexpensive if maintained properly. There’s a few things to keep an eye on and they can last quite a long time. 1. Keep the lint screen in the dust bin clean. Hair can sometimes wrap around it. It’s easy to access through the top of the bin. 2. Keep the brush roll free of hair. There is a built-in groove that allows you to easily cut hair. 3. Filters. Purchase a jumbo pack online for $20. Wash the foam and felt pre-motor filters once a month and just replace them every 3. Do not wash the post motor HEPA filter, and replace every 6 month I’ve found these to work well on carpet and hard floor. There is a suction reducing valve on the hose handle that makes it work well on tricky rugs. The Kenmore Intuition upright is another great inexpensive choice. It’s bagged and eliminates the hassle of constant bagless maintenance. Also look at a Kenmore 200 or 400 series canister. Canisters are better for lots of different floor surfaces. You can get a Kenmore pet powermate mini power nozzle that fits the 200 / 400 for extra tough stuff and the fitting it uses is generic so lots of attachments will work with it. I think this is probably going to be your best bet. The 400 series goes on sale online for $220 if you can stretch

There’s lots of great bagged straight suction canisters where you can add a turbo brush - Wessel Werk TK286 is the best turbo nozzle out there. Simplicity Jill with that optional turbo will work great. If you want a power nozzle, I’d suggest going with a Kenmore 400 series, not 600. The 400 has a more solid attachment system and is a standard 1 1/4” or 32mm fitting. You can get a Kenmore powermate mini motorized brush roll tool if that’s needed.

There is no such thing as a “self cleaning brushroll” without compromising something. Hair still wraps in the bearings and that’s where the damage really happens. Most self cleaning brushrolls compromise on deep cleaning. The best brushroll for hair wrap is the SEBO cassette design With the variety of flooring and needs, I’m thinking a Kenmore 200 or 400 series might be your best bet. Bagged vacuums have more airflow, lower maintenance, better filtration, etc. pet hair compacts in the bags. With so many different needs, I think this might be the best bet for $200. The difference between the 200 and 400 are an adjustable wand, the power switch is on the handle, adjustable suction, and better filtration.

for hard floors and heavy dust, the kenmore 400 series canister is still one of the safest picks under 250. it has true hepa bags, strong sealed suction, and does a great job with fine dust and dander. bagged design also means less dust blowback when emptying, which matters a lot with birds. fwiw my mate and i recently looked at reddit data on vacuums and ranked them by aggregated sentiment over the past year. canister kenmores show up constantly for dust control and longevity. if you google redditrecs, you can filter by hepa and hard floors to see what people mention most often. some links are affiliate and help fund the analysis.

Omg I just realized I was thinking about the Prolux Phantom upright and you are probably talking about the Prolux Phantom canister. It used to be called the Prolux Terravac canister. Ok so my first comment was about how I'm unipressed by the Prolux Phantom Upright. The Prolux Phantom canister vacuum is a bit more favorable. I like the choice of powerheads, the full size hard floor brush, the hepa bags, and the hepa filter. I've seen the Phantom Canister Deep Cleaning Pet for $299. If you have high pile or plush carpets the Phantom Canister Deluxe Carpet $399 has carpet height adjustment. Overall these are small canisters with good carpet powerheads. Downside is a short hose but the hose is really not bad for the price range. The Kenmore 400 Series or BC3005 $225 should be the minimum for Kenmore canisters. The 200 Series has a clip on cord on the wand, a shorter cord, and no suction control. Downsides are Kenmore 400 Series and most of Kenmore's canisters powerhead turn but there's no steering control, the hard floor brush is small and narrow, and the bags don't have a rubber gasket to create a good seal. Kenmores are very capable at cleaning carpets and a very good value but I like the Prolux canisters a little better.

I have an older Miele (2001 iirc) and a new Kenmore, they honestly trade blows. The Miele is much quieter, the attachments, hose, bags, and filters seem nicer, and I'm betting it does actually filter better too (or did when it was newer). But the Kenmore has the badass mini electric brush head, the handle controls for on/off as well as suction is pretty dang nifty, the bags are much larger (but for some asinine reason don't fit well inside the vaccuum), the bags and filters are all *significantly* cheaper to buy, it feels like it has similar suction, and it costs a fraction as much as a new Miele. Essentially, the Kenmore feels like a *good* knockoff Miele, and for the price they ask I think that's pretty dang good for most people.

Everyone says Shark. I had many Shark vacuums. The filters suck. The canisters suck. The brush rolls suck. When they broke or died it was impossible to find anyone who was willing to repair them. I decided to switch to a bagged canister style vacuum. I started with a kenmore because I wasn’t sure I’d like the canister style and Kenmore vacuums are fairly inexpensive. I really liked it. Although it was super heavy. The bags are much cleaner and easier to deal with than the shark canisters. One bag lasts a week or more which means I’m not dumping the canister multiple times during one clean. Filters don’t get as dirty. The Kenmore died after a year but I was able to get it repaired for cheap enough (was a fuse or something). I saved up $ and bought a Miele bagged canister style vacuum and I love it so much. Superior suction. Superior filtration. Light weight. Will never go back to the crappy shark vacuums. I’m a Miele for life. And I can get it repaired or serviced at my local vacuum repair place. I probably spent as much on all the sharks I bought as I did on the Miele.

An upright will store in less space, but a canister with a power nozzle is more versatile overall. Kenmore canisters are a solid choice. SEBO and Miele will last longer, but obviously cost a substantial amount more. Look at the Kenmore 400 model canister if you can stretch your budget a bit. The BC3005 you mentioned is fine, just basic. The 400 has a brush roll that will help fight hair wrap - not completely maintenance free, but it will help. [Kenmore 400 Series Canister](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FSCZ3DQC?tag=psuni-01-US-5242-20&ascsubtag=wtbs_6913e60ca7cf93504d9c3701&me=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1) Another good Kenmore option - no headlight, but has a motorized hand tool for cleaning upholstery and carpeted stairs. First of all, your dog is so cute. This [Kenmore Intuition](https://a.co/d/iQJvWFv) would work well. This [Kenmore Canister](https://a.co/d/90JfCNM) would do well, too. It cleans carpets, it has attachments, and it’s under budget. These two vacuums are for cleaning carpets only (no attachments) but they’re under budget and would work well. [Oreck XL](https://a.co/d/9aA1IX6) [Kaercher Ranger](https://www.kaercher.com/us/commercial/vacuum-cleaners/upright/ranger-10129000.html) Between those two, I would choose the Kaercher because the brushroll pops out easily to clean it. Just noting that a difference between bagged and bagless vacuums is that bagless vacuums volumize dirt and debris, so you have to empty the bin after every clean. A bagged vacuum compacts the dirty and hair so you don’t need to change the bags until after a few months, most likely.

Just get a regular canister Kenmore or Panasonic vacuum. All those stick and battery vacuums are gimmicks. $300-$500 dollars, will last you forever. Maximum suction, 30' retracting cord, HEPA bag - hose arm and head will go under furniture. I have 2 story home with hardwood and cat. Amazing how much dander a single cat can generate in a day. I vacuum every couple days when I see that thin layer on the floor. Cat's 7 years old, vacuum is 22 years old.

Just realized she had carpet. My bad, the shopvacs don't have a roller brush, so that probably won't work. Maybe consider a Kenmore canister vac from the recommended list on the automod. I unclog a lot of different vacuums but not many kenmores. Slightly larger hose diameter, plus a ton of suction and a straighter airpath than an upright vac lessen the likelihood of a blockage. They should also be well within budget

You might like a Kenmore canister vac, the power head is super light and they have wands so you can reach places more easily. Also changing the bag is really easy, and you are only moving the hose around not the weight of the whole machine. Figuring out where to place the canister might be tricky, probably beside your chair on dominant side is best, and you can pull it behind you through doorways. The newer models, the handle is a loop, so you don't have to grip it all that well to use it, and they are strong and quiet. My grandma used a wheelchair a lot in her older years because she fell so frequently, and she had one. Worked pretty good for her because with the hose she could sweep a pretty good sized area without navigating the chair too much. She would stick the canister under the chair and put her foot on it so as she moved the chair, it moved with her. They go under tables and stuff really easily too, and you can actually stick your foot in that loop handle to get under low beds and furniture so you don't have to bend and risk tipping the chair.

400 series is a slightly better version of the 200, I think the main upgrades are controls on the handle vs on the canister and a longer cord. If you can move up to the 600 though I’d highly recommend it. Longer hose, better hard floor tool, and mini power brush which is really useful if you have carpeted stairs. I used a 400 for a while and eventually sold it and bought a 600. They’re both good machines though

If you can stretch the budget to the Kenmore you linked this [Kenmore 400 Series](https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/kenmore-400-series-hepa-multi-surface-bagged-corded-canister-vacuum-14-in-14a-0439474p.html?rq=canister+vacuums) $299 CAD it's definitely worth it over the other 2 vacuums. The bagged vacuum will last longer and be much cleaner to empty, you only need to change the bag once every 2-3 months. The powerhead will clean your rugs better and it has height adjustment so it might be able to work on the shag with the brushroll on, if it gets caught just use it with the brushroll off. The 200 Series and 400 Series are closely related with the 400 Series coming with a covered powerhead cable, slightly longer cord, and sometimes suction control. The Kenmore you linked is an orange 400 Series, while in the U.S. most of the orange canisters are only 200 Series.

Ah sorry, the purple one on Amazon is the 600 series. It's a bit larger and more capable, with more attachments than the 200. It sort of goes like this, 200 orange is most basic, then the 200 series blue, then the purple 600, then the silver top of the line one. What kinds of floors are you looking to clean? This will determine how much a miele or sebo would run you for your situation.

It depends on what you mean by “repairing”. Repairing usually refers to replacing a worn belt, the brush roller gets hair tangled around it on the sides where you can’t cut it and needs to be taken out and cleaned, and the vacuum can get clogged and needs to be cleared out. If you want to do any of that, don’t get a shark, because you can’t open them up to do any of those basic things that you could do on most vacuums 10 years ago. Look at a simplicity, or kenmore for plug in. Or Henry quick for cordless ????

Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and Home Depot usually don't have any quality vacuums in-store. I think it's well worth waiting a few days for a much better vacuum to be delivered. Around $300 I'd choose the [Kenmore BC3005/400 Series Canister](https://www.amazon.com/Kenmore-Friendly-Lightweight-Telescoping-Retractable/dp/B08M36B5JZ/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1LIN73WN60Q7U&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.8ewF-JMcxGUJ0_bJKD7ZQawRw6pGpO5OqeApeQnrzJVixousGI7XFMmJYWgqPSMdOfLQVxtKW8mvL7fqqWDuU0OxsMALT5P9LSR7Kj7TwLJ6y02PCX-1rOub2dkSuAFrWKxtyNqwBnMBkLHpNHeS74DFEgjiTjwmJtv6tLH5Z9cIKfVJcD6kkFBUVjukEGxJCgp01yAPyB3iAnMIc-p48IZiKIYck6Fy_2yxe3qOtt0.oaUnR4UjlFHOP9LBRtFDoHqx5BK8KC8OrxgAOOr-MgI&dib_tag=se&keywords=kenmore%2Bvacuum&qid=1739653359&sprefix=kenmore%2Bvacuum%2Caps%2C209&sr=8-4&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.5998aa40-ec6f-4947-a68f-cd087fee0848&th=1) $248 or the [Kenmore Elite Upright](https://www.amazon.com/Kenmore-Allergy-Friendly-Beltless-Upright/dp/B075DZY7FR/ref=sr_1_9?crid=1LIN73WN60Q7U&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.8ewF-JMcxGUJ0_bJKD7ZQawRw6pGpO5OqeApeQnrzJVixousGI7XFMmJYWgqPSMdOfLQVxtKW8mvL7fqqWDuU0OxsMALT5P9LSR7Kj7TwLJ6y02PCX-1rOub2dkSuAFrWKxtyNqwBnMBkLHpNHeS74DFEgjiTjwmJtv6tLH5Z9cIKfVJcD6kkFBUVjukEGxJCgp01yAPyB3iAnMIc-p48IZiKIYck6Fy_2yxe3qOtt0.oaUnR4UjlFHOP9LBRtFDoHqx5BK8KC8OrxgAOOr-MgI&dib_tag=se&keywords=kenmore%2Bvacuum&qid=1739653359&sprefix=kenmore%2Bvacuum%2Caps%2C209&sr=8-9&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.5998aa40-ec6f-4947-a68f-cd087fee0848&th=1) $279. Both have carpet height adjustment and brushroll shutoff so they can do both hard floors and carpets and rugs. The Kenmore BC3005 has a longer flexible hose and will have a very lightweight hard floor brush, but some people dislike how canisters move. The Kenmore Elite is a very good carpet cleaner and it's not too heavy to push, but it's very heavy to lift up. Kenmore makes affordable bagged vacuums that should last around 5+ years. If you want a BIFL vacuum I'd check out the [Sebo Dart](https://sebo.us/product/dart) MSRP $599 (usually on sale $549). The Sebo Dart is a very well built vacuum. It's powerful and quieter than the average vacuum. But it's top heavy and the hose is short.

A canister with hepa filtration, long hose, and all of the attachments. My parents had a kenmore canister that was great for many years.

If you want to deep clean, cordless ain’t it. Bagged is going to be better for allergies since the bag acts as a very effective filter. Also, doesn’t require you to empty it constantly or have clean the machine itself like you do with cordless, which just stirs all those allergens back up. Bagged is just more hygienic. A canister style machine will give you the most versatility and ability to get into tighter spots. Within your budget? Look at the Kenmore 600 or 400 series.

I have a Kenmore canister and the Panasonic equivalent both for 25+ years running fine. Nothing has every broken so parts are no concern. Just replaced the filters every 10 years or when my brain reminds me :D.

Least favorite: Bissell uprights. Every one I've ever used, the end caps for the brush roll has melted. I also find the suction power really lackluster and feel like they scatter more dirt and dust than they actually collect. Rainbow - gigantic pain to use, too high maintenance, and the water is gross AF and messy to deal with Cordless sticks - not powerful enough for my liking, multiple passes to pick everything up and they die too fast. Favorite: Windsor Versamatic, Old school style Electrolux and Kenmore canisters, old school style Hoover uprights, Windsor XP-12. Just good, sturdy, effective machines.

I bought a $25 used kenmore canister vac, then disassembled and meticulously cleaned it cause I was overwhelmed with the idea of spending a grand on one of a dozen different options. I’m very happy with my purchase, and like hyperfocusing on projects like that.

Ignore the purple one from walmart, its the same price as the orange one on amazon, but comes with fewer and worse small attachments. It's not a good deal. The main difference between the two on Amazon is the blue one has a variable suction adjustment built into the handle. This let's you lower the suction motor down, for cleaning throw rugs, dusting drapes, etc. Or allows it to vacuum really dense rugs. Really underrated feature imo. The orange one on Amazon is mostly the same minus the suction adjustment. Personally I'd get the blue one off Amazon but if you don't think the suction adjustment would be useful, the orange one is fine.
