I bought the Samsung, used it for a bit, and ultimately returned it for the LG. I use my monitor for both gaming and work. There are many excellent comparison and reviews already, but I found they were so heavy on technical specs, and due to the unclear relative scale in a video to real life, it made it difficult to get a sense of how the monitors actually feel in daily use. This post is meant to be a high-level, practical explanation of why I strongly prefer the LG by a wide mile. I hope it helps others doing research. As well for people who don't have a distinct and necessary prefance to super ultrawide and/or glossy. **Monitors Compared:** • **Samsung 49" Odyssey OLED G9 (G91SD):** 5120x1440, 144Hz, glossy, curved • **LG 45GX950A-B (45" OLED Ultragear):** 5120x2160, 165Hz (330Hz in 1080p mode), matte, curved Both were purchased from Amazon. Returning the G9 was straightforward. The large box was a bit awkward to repackage. But I got it to UPS and got an immediate return accepted notice once scanned in. As well, I selected an older G9 model specifically to avoid Samsung's "smart" features. From my research there was no difference in the actual screen technology. And as I describe later, the only real benefit the Samsung had for me was price. Everything shared here is just based on my personal experience and opinion and is not objective. # 1. Price After taxes and shipping, the Samsung cost around $900 and the LG was approximately $2,000. In my opinion, the LG is well worth the extra cost. It is such a high-end and gorgeous display that I do not expect a comparable option at a lower price anytime soon. If I could not get the LG, I would personally prefer using two 1440p OLED monitors angled toward each other as a second-best setup over the Samsung as well. That said, if you want everything on one large screen or prefer super ultrawide display more than anything, the Samsung offers excellent value. It provides a beautiful image and generous screen space at a great price. If the LG is beyond your budget, you should not feel like you are missing out. The Samsung is still a very good experience, and the difference is not so extreme as to justify making yourself financially anxious. # 2. Dimensions and Aspect Ratio This was the biggest reason I made the switch. While the G9 looks amazing, the low verticality to keep a 32:9 aspect ratio within a reasonable size (and within the 1440p resolution) is not ideal for most everyday content. The vast majority of websites, games, videos, and images are designed for 16:9. Trying to force that into a 32:9 panel (with the verticality of an average 16:9 screen) felt claustrophobic to me. Unless you truly need a super ultrawide format or only interact with super ultrawide content, I believe most users will likely find the Samsung uncomfortable. Content often ends up small when centered or pushed far to the sides, which is not enjoyable on such a wide screen. The LG handles this much better. It works beautifully as one large 16:9 screen or can be split cleanly into two side-by-side windows. And anything that is 21:9 content looks stunning. Even standard 16:9 content appears great thanks to the OLED black levels that blend the letterboxing into the bezel. The LG delivers a widescreen effect that feels useful and natural to me. # 3. Resolution This was the second major reason I returned the Samsung. Both monitors have a horizontal resolution of 5120 pixels, but the Samsung has only 1440 vertical pixels. For a screen that large, that resolution is not sufficient. It causes text and images to feel stretched and less sharp. The LG, with its 2160 vertical pixels, looks incredibly crisp. Some users have mentioned text fuzziness, but I have only noticed that with applications that do not scale properly. I'm writing this on the monitor and it looks perfect. If needed, you can adjust the screen to act like a virtual 4K display. Anything running at native 5120x2160 looks better than anything I have used before. The only downside is that it is so sharp and you're so close up to it, it reveals compression artifacts and lower texture quality in games or videos that you might otherwise overlook. # 4. Bezels The bezels on the LG are noticeably thinner than on the Samsung I used. This creates a more immersive experience and reduces wasted screen space. # 5. Matte vs Glossy The G9 wins here as glossy screens can look more vibrant and provide more visual punch. That said, I adjusted to the matte finish on the LG very quickly and now prefer it practically. And it's higher resolution has a bigger impact on visuals than screen type. Reflections are minimal on matte. My desk is near a window, and the Samsung often acted almost like a mirror during daylight. The LG avoids that issue entirely. In my opinion, it also appears brighter in typical lighting conditions. # 6. OLED Quality After adjusting settings, both monitors looked beautiful. I am not particularly sensitive to subtle color shifts, so I cannot speak to any differences in white balance or tint. What I can say is that both offer rich colors and deep inky blacks. When displaying a fully black screen, both monitors appear completely powered off. # 7. Physical Size This is different from resolution or dimensions. In many video reviews, the LG appears much smaller horizontally than the Samsung. However, in person the difference is far less dramatic. The LG still feels absolutely massive when in front of it. You would need to place the monitors side by side to truly notice the difference in width. Even though the Samsung is technically wider, the LG still delivers an almost super-ultrawide feel in actual use while not sacrifing verticality. # 8. Plug and Play This may not apply to everyone, but in my case the LG was significantly easier to set up with Windows. It immediately detected the correct resolution and refresh rate. The Samsung required more configuration to get everything displaying properly. It just felt a bit more fussy overall. # 9. FPS and Performance The LG supports up to 330Hz in 1080p mode, which is incredibly smooth. However, the drop in resolution is definitely noticeable on a screen this big. I prefer to use the monitor at its full 5120x2160 resolution at 165Hz, which still looks and feels fantastic. The high refresh rate is a bonus, and switching between modes can be done with one button. \-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let me know if you have any questions!

Needed for gaming and productivity but when I saw it in person a 49 inch monitor at Harvey, I think it was a MSI one, I got sold. It's so much worth it If you decide to go that way, Wait for Samsung deal, I got it for 920 aud which is really cheap. Trick is you call Samsung and ask for discount code since you have Samsung product (make it up) and I was given a 15 percent code and the monitor was already on sale so got lucky. Also I should mention that some people have access to edu pricing including me and sometimes it is more cheaper there but in my case it was not. So just give it a thought.

I use my G9 for work/productivity. 32:9 is sadly poorly supported in games. Many games support ultrawide (21:9), but when you're going superultrawide the sides are just getting stretched and you can encounter bugs here and there in certain games. I actually prefer 16:10 but I guess thats so year 2000.

For your use case however since you will primarily be playing one game and doing some productivity on it as well this might be the better option. I have had my OLED for almost a year now and I absolutely love it. Most modern day OLEDs have a feature built in called screen shift. Every 10 mins or so the screen will shift a few pixels in a direction to help prevent burn in. Both my LG C1 TV from about 5 years ago now and my Samsung G9 monitor do that. Honestly I think you would be fine with an OLED considering all the advancements that come with it. You almost have to be intentionally trying to cause burn in in order for you to be concerned about it nowadays. Don't get me wrong, the threat is still there but it will take thousands of hours on the same screen and some disabling of default features for it to really be a concern in 2025.

45” may just be the sweet spot. I use a 49” G9 and a 38GN950 which are both brilliant but in the middle could be a great compromise

Also most game recognizes the 21x9 ratio. The aspect ratio of the 49" is not as common. Also the 49" runs hot. I went to the local best buy and I can really feel the heat even in a normal functioning distance, something to be aware of.

Your 5080 will be more than enough for that resolution. You’ll want to use all of the AI tricks to use ray and path tracing but you’ll get a solid FPS.

Either way you need to know what computer you will need to get the most out of it. A budget computer won’t do it and in my opinion waste of money for the monitor if you don’t. If you do look at used, make sure it doesn’t have any dead spots. Be very careful with that.

Then I have 2x g9 oleds stacked at home. Curve is pretty flat and text is more difficult to get used to then the g9 neo and I feel like the colors aren’t as natural as the g9 neo but the colors are definitely sharper and better blacks and they stacked better with the lesser curve, however text was straight up rough when getting used to it and tuning it in. If it was do it all single ultra wide I’d prob go regular g9 Neo 57. Not really 2025 models but though the insight might be worth sharing.

Sadly LG using matte coat and with WOLED its not as good as Samsung QD-OLED. I'm been using a lot HDR Mode also in games even if they dont support naturally, its still so much better than without it except few games where its messed up like D4. This is where G9 shines. Another problem is aggressive curve. Not good for productivity.

On the G9 at least, if you drop the resolution to 21:9 or 16:9, it stays centered, so it can function exactly as a 21:9 or 16:9 in the situation that you want/need that. It's literally no downside.

With a multi gpu set up everytime I wanted to race I had to move the cables to my main gpu, turn the PC on then enable surround. It got old after a while. When I got back into it just stuck with a solo monitor till I got into VR. Recently picked up the g9 49" oled for non VR titles or when I don't want to be strapped in. Definitely less hassle. You lose some Fov, I've been messing with different settings and monitor placement to get my cockpit view not so staggered to one window or the other based on LHD or RHD vehicles. Also working on eye tracking to more naturally follow vs using wheel controls for glancing.

I’ve been considering this monitor because the down side of the G9 is I don’t have much space for monitors in the side. I have one stacked above it and it’s like cracking my neck every time to look up. Knowing the aspect resolution is smaller is enticing to me from a gaming perspective, most likely more frames. I have a 9800X3D and a 9070 XT. Would you still recommend this monitor for my use case? I literally just searched for reviews and found yours last night ??
r/ultrawidemasterrace • View on Reddit →my current desk is 55.1" x 23.6", a bit off from your dimensions i used to run dual 32" for content consumption and gaming(both console and PC), i did run dual monitor arms for the displays and to me it didn't feel like they both were too wide for my desk with them going over a bit on each side. gaming and web browsing were the priority for that setup. next setup was with an 49" Samsung(for gaming and productivity), the dual 32s' mounted to the wall atop the 49" were for things like discord, emails and web browsing. though i enjoyed all the screen real estate, it didn't last long and thoughts of sizing down became paramount. i thought "how about" an single 34" but having 32" displays it didn't feel right, then i thought 45" LG Ultragear OLED but after owning the 49" (to me) that was still a tad bit wide for what i wanted. i ended up with an newly purchased(earlier this month) 39" LG Ultragear OLED. FOR ME it checks all the things i was looking for as far as size, specs and use. I use it for photo/video editing via my new mac mini m4 and def for FPS gaming(again console and PC). HDR when gaming has been an eye opener and game changer on this display. in my opinion, the 39" compliments MY desk's dimensions. On an monitor arm and positioned directly in the middle of the desk at arms length. haha, sorry for the looong read. good luck with whatever you decide.

r/ultrawidemasterrace • View on Reddit →I’ve shared my feedback on other posts but will reiterate here given there aren’t many reviews or real world experience users out there to share. For context, I’ve spent the last couple of years on OLED, first the Alienware 3423dw, then the MSI mpg321urx and a Samsung G80sd. I’ve also tried (and returned) the MSI and Samsung 49 inch super ultra wides. I “downgraded” to the g75f 40 and it’s been a pleasant surprise for me. I like it way more than I thought I would and giving up perfect blacks was a lot easier to do. Part of that may be because I don’t play a lot of really dark games, but I think part of it is this monitor has really good contrast. Colors seem great and calibrating with my Calbrite went well. My use case is 80% productivity and 20% gaming, maybe 90/10 or 100/0 on really busy weeks. I can’t understate how much easier it is on my eyes after a 10 or 12 hour day of spreadsheets and legal memos. Not having to set low brightness to avoid burn in helps with that I’m sure. Not having to hide taskbars, keep a bland black background are pluses for general usability/ enjoyment. The 5k2k and 40 inch form factor feels best for productivity, and while the Dell or LG IPS monitors have more productivity features, most of their convenience is covered by my work issued thunderbolt dock. Viewing angles aren’t nearly as good comparing to OLED but in practical use I’ve not had any issues. On occasion at the farthest edge of the screen I can see slight brightness / gamma shift. But otherwise, I sit in front of my monitor and haven’t found it problematic. Overall, seems to strike the right balance of productivity, gaming, and peace of mind for my admittedly very fringe use case/needs. At $676 all in with Samsung EPP through my work, I feel like I get good value out of it. Not worth it at retail or really anything above $850 in my opinion. I know the “OLED or die” crowd will pan it as poor value and for the gaming enthusiasts/ priority buyer, I’m sure it is bad value. But if you fall in a similar use case as me, I’d recommend giving it a shot if you get it on sale, you might be surprised. Worst thing that can happen is you don’t like it and return it.
