Hoka - Mafate Speed Series

Mafate Speed 4 is still great. Big fan of the Nike Zegama 2 these days too. Both are on the heavier side but are very protective and have great grip. I feel a bit more nimble in the Mafate though. I have a Kjerag that I really like but I guess I have poor footwork because I think I need more cushion. I really hurt my foot landing on a root in the last race I wore them on. Mafate Speed 4 Lite is very cool but I want to see some reviews from trail runners. Hoka is positioning it as a lifestyle shoe which I think is odd and is causing it to be looked over by real runners (I think).

I ran through six pairs of Lone Peaks, they rocked for traction but usually exploded around 300 miles. After 10yrs of Altras I switched to Mafates and immediately stopped rolling my ankles, had near-complete resolution of my bilateral anterior tibialis pain, and the shoes easily last 100-200 miles longer. Mafates all the way if no other reason than durability

Nordas. Dyneema construction, designed for durability. May/May not be a good shoe for your needs. Designed to give double the mileage than Altras/Hokas. That said, I've found my Hoka Mafates routinely give me 500+ drama-free miles, whereas all my Altras would usually explode at ~300miles.

It looks cool, was one of the only ones using Vibram Megagrip as standard early on before Covid made trail running more popular. As more companies either use Vibram exclusively or have a version with it, it�ll lose its edge. My main beef with hoka is that they just seem to keep adding foam (thereby increasing weight) instead of just innovating. They also messed up the mafete series so badly. People loved the mafete speed 4, should�ve just ruggedized it instead of axing it.

Mafate Speed 4. Just enough squishy cushion, and bonkers tread. I still remember one of the first legit trail shoes. The asics gel Moro. At the time they were a pretty great option when there was almost nothing else. They came out around the same time or maybe even slightly before the Montrail Vitesse.

Hoka Mafate Speed 4 - I find them as protective and cushy as the goats but not as "dead" feeling. Bouncier. And BONKERS tread. Recently have been hearing great things about La Sportiva Prodigio. Tried them on but didn't purchase. Felt amazing.

Mafate Speed 4. Love love love these things. Used to love Topo but now they feel so heavy.

I loved as well the 5th iteration of the speedgoat, and I have been enjoying the mafate speed 4 more than the speedgoat 6.

I found the fit on my mafate�s to narrow for anything more than a 25k. Honestly wouldn�t recommend them even at that distance if you have a wider than a normal D size.

good eye! Yes. they did well during the race. when I switched to the Speedgoats at mile 50 is when my feat started to hurt. maybe that was the speed goats, maybe it would have happened anyway. I don't know. but my feeet were feeling pretty good for the first 50 in the Mafate X.

I have been curious about this model with the increased drop. I ran in the Mafate Speed 4 and really liked those�

Love my Mach�s for the road. Been using Mafate Speed�s for trails. Not sure if they make em in wide.

I use mafate speed 4s for most my runs but with use tecton x2s or tecton x3s for races depending on terrain.

Few are duplicate pairs because i like the shoes that much. 3 pairs of hoka mafates and 2 pairs of tecton x2s

Speedboats are probably the worst trail shoe I have ever tried. Had the 5 and have not bothered even looking at the 6. However the hoka mafate speed 4 is probably one of my favourite trail shoes. Run well over 1000ks between a few pairs and zero complaints with them. Lightweight and trail do bot really go hand in hand,dont think I have a single pair under 300g a shoe for my US12 One I am really enjoying this year has been the la sportiva prodigio pro, simply cannot fault that shoe at all.

The Mafate 4 doesnt have a plate

Hoka Mafates are the most durable for me. However I'm lighter weight. But Mafates are well made shoes.

Hoka Mafate speed 4 homer, but recently moved to the Hoka Stinson 7 and they are amazing. I plan on having the Mafate�s for more mild terrain and the Stinson�s for more technical trails.

It�s great to hear they worked out well for you! I went with yellow too. Put about 40 miles on mine so far and they feel great. Looking forward to using them on my first 50k. It was a choice between Mafate X, Speedgoat, or the Rocket X Trail.

Mafate X is a great Clydesdale shoe. I've been loving mine so far. Speedlands as well.

I'm currently using Hoka Mafates and loving them. They replaced my old speedboats and have been excellent. Fairly light, great grip and incredibly comfy.

Mafate Speed 4. Strikes an awesome balance for everything I need.

I'm part of the target market. I have a 30 Mile in August at Lean Horse (Custer, SD) on a gravel railroad bed followed by a 50K at the Wolverine State 100 (Alpena, MI) on crushed limestone and then the Dead Horse 50 Mile (Moab, UT) on slickrock. While I'll be wearing the Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra for them as I'm a small guy and need a lighter shoe, the Hoka Mafate X trail is going to be ideal for a medium or heavier runner running ultras on similar surfaces. Because I live in Michigan, I do a lot of my trail running on forest single track. I wouldn't wear a shoe like this for training. The always dependable Saucony Peregrine for easy runs or a shoe like the ASICS Fujispeed 3 for faster paced trail workouts is a safer option. But there are many ultramarathons that aren't on gnarley forest single track where plushness is much more important for long-haul events than trail feel or stability. But also where the trail surface would quickly chew apart a max stacked road shoe.

Iv gone thru 1 pair of Speedgoat 5�s and have another 2 in my collection, so this is to say I enjoy the speedgoats. Over the summer I demo�d a pair of mafate�s which I enjoyed and didn�t find too different than the speed goats. I also recently added a pair of Oncloud Clouvistas which I did a 50k in and I liked those �grip isn�t as good as the speedgoats but similar padding. Finally Iv also had a pair of oncloud cloudventure peaks but those were minimalist padding and I felt the lugs wore out quickly so I wouldn�t recommend those

I�m on my 3rd season of switching to trail runners over hiking boots. Everyone may have a different experience but for me, my feet have never been happier (Hooka, Speedgoat 5).

Well I just ditched my Topos because of the aggressive toe spring ?? and I'm currently trying to find a replacement. Will try the HOKA Tecton X 2 this week. But my favs have been HOKA Speedgoat 4, HOKA Mafate Speed 4, and the Salomon Sense Ride 2 & 4 Favorite vest is still the Nathan VaporHowe

I thought the 5 was awful and haven't even tried the 6. Have 2 pairs of 5s with about 100k in each. Lugs wore quickly and you felt every rock in them. Very little energy return from the foam. Switched to mafates and they are a better shoe is every way for me

Mafate speed 4 is actually 7mm in runrepeat test. I have a pair, and they don't feel as other 4mm drop shoes I use. OP, you could try Asics trabucos. They are 8mm, go for 12th versi�n, 13th upper is trash

The Mafates are good -I use them. That being said, when doing a desert ultra over mostly rocky surface the soles of my feet felt a bit mashed, probably not *enough* cushioning

I do a lot of technical terrain, I have the zegama 2s in my rotation. Don't take them for that purpose. They are bouncy and nice running, but they are too soft for technical terrain and scrambling for me. I use them as recovery and easy trail shoes. I like Asics trabucos for that kind of high mountain activities, but 13s upper can't handle rough terrain. Maybe you could find the 12s on sale, or just go with the 13s and be ok with getting 400km more or less from the upper. Asicsgrip is in my opinion on par or better than megagrip. I have just raced 10 hours and a half on them in high altitude with 3.600m + and 4.000m -, lots of scrambling and some running parts. Ending with "fresh legs" and no pain. Mafate speed 4s are in my opinion better than speedgoats for technical terrain. Great traction in every surface and stiff enough while still confortable for long efforts. I was a long user of hierro V5 and v6, the V8 was a "road shoe", the v9 is made very narrow now for my shoe but it looks nice. Tomir 2.0 could be another option and also prodigio pros, but I haven't try myself this ones.

No comparison. Higher quality upper, midsole, and outsole with Hoka (Mafate in particular). Read on RunRepeat regarding premium foams� might also consider how many pros run on trail (and road) in Hoka internationally, and the ability of the brand to invest in shoe running tech, as compared vs Altra� also try on the Nike Zegama if you want to try another trail option with premium tech�

I've had the mafate and currently have the speedgoat 6. I hate the speedgoats and can't wait to wear them out so I can get my next pair of shoes. Mafates were excellent. I use them for trail running at all distances.

I'm a huge fan of Hoka Mafate Speed 4. It is soft, yet very stable. It's also no slouch on technical stuff.

I require a wider toe box as well, and the mafate has it. I had mafate first and then tried speedgoat and they were terrible for me. Mafate for much better. I currently have Norda 001 and the toe box isn't big enough�

I�ve done plenty of races and you�re definitely going to want shoes with tight laces and deep lugs. See Salomon Speedcross and Hoka Mafate for reference. Don�t do a waterproof shoe.

4s are my daily trainer and I love them. This looks like a major misstep for my preferences.

I found all Topos to run short. Wore a women's 8.5 in HOKAs and a size 10 in Topos. I trained in the Speedgoats and Mafates and currently wear Pursuits and Ultraventures�

Asics trabucos are wide and roomy. The speedgoats 2E are actually very narrow and low volume. Even the mafate speed 4 in normal width are roomier. I tried topo MTN racer 3. They are wide in the forefoot, but narrow in the arch/midfoot. Can't wear them Agility peak 5 is also wide and high volume.

Not really, they have done them fo a while, it's for flat not technical trail that you could do with normal shoes except they have more protected foam that would otherwise get destroyed by rocks. The naming is really confusing though, mafate speed is great for technical trail while the X (this one) would honestlmy be dangerous to use on something technical So overall it's not a big market, at least regular trail shoes can also be used for hiking, these ones havea very specific use case

HOKA Mafate 4s I'm riding. There class, met some Italians who Stanley rave about la sportiva

I found it fine in wet conditions. Nothing remarkable in terms of how long it took/how quickly they dried. Grip was good on wet terrain (mud, rock etc). Comfy for hike but wouldn't recommend for dry conditions above treeline or the shoes really dry out and start to peel

I would take the hoka mafate speed 4 over the speedboats any day of the week, miles better shoe for me

I am a big fan of the Mafate speed 4. And so i bought the 5. I was soooo disappointed! This is a totally different shoe. Soooo heavy and unsportive. I really hate this shoe. My toes also hurted: they are not even the same size. I just don't get it! Why not keeping it on the same track as the 4? The 5 has nothing to do with the 4. I really don't get it. I just sent them back. Really hate this shoe

Hello, here my feedback based on my experiences with trying on these shoes in store: Altamesa: I found it had good cushion except for where my toes were and it felt like they wouldn't soften no matter how many km's I put into them. Speedgoat 6: toe box felt weirdly roomy for a narrowish shoe and they didn't quite fit right. Hierro: I was able to try on the v7, v8 and v9 models all at one store. The v9 we're the best out of the 3 but I still didn't like the v9. It just felt oddly bulky which was a shame as I love NB shoes. The 1080's are my favourite. Stinson 7: I just bought a pair from MEC yesterday and they felt so good on my feet as soon as I put them on. I'm a little used to heavier shoes so that doesn't bother me. I really want a max cushion trail runners that doesn't need to be super technical trail focused. Salomon Ultra Glide/Ultra Flow: i really wanted to like these but they were a little narrow and just didn't have the comfy impact I was expecting. Altra Timp 5: I think these shoes are awesome except for the way the upper material bends at the toe box. It just feels weird and I can tell it will create problems for me a few km's into a run. I also have the Topo Ultraventure 4 which are great but I don't know how well I would enjoy them past 30km. I have Columbia Ecolite (the ones that look like they infused golf balls into the form) which have been great but just aren't on the same level as other trail shoes. I had the Brooks Caldera 6 which were okay and had great traction but they hurt my feet and caused blood blisters on the outside of my big toes so I was able to return them when I got the Stinson. I've tried on many other runners and I have the believe that you should go with the shoe that fells the best on your foot. E: forgot to add that I also tried on the hoka mafate speed 4 and I almost bought them as they were don't in the toe box compared to the speed goats 5 & 6 but I wanted slightly more cushioning. I think the mafate is a great comparison to the topo Ultraventure 4

I had 4s and 5s and loved them. I returned the 6 after one run. The Mafate 4s are great but my pair was done after maybe 300 miles. I just got a pair of la Sportiva Prodigio pro. They feel amazing so far.
