I love my Aqara G4 - it's a very solid doorbell. I will also agree that it has to be wired in. I had mine on battery only, but in a high foot-traffic area the battery drained very quickly. I have mine wired in, talking directly to HK (no third party control) and it works extremely well. It's been 5 months and I often recommend it and would buy it again.

I have had two Aqara G4s fail partially. One just wouldn’t stay connected when mounted next to the door. The other one stopped sounding its chime. I moved one to the attic to watch for mice and moved the other one to a door no one ever uses. Replaced with a Reolink which I’m pulling into HomeKit with Scrypted.

Same here. I have these on two doors that face south and bake in the afternoon sun. Bought one in July 2023 and the other last year because my Aqara kept disconnecting.

This, 100%. I’ve had mine for close to a year. Switched from Ring because I wanted HK. It runs in a 12V adapter now (was on battery originally but I wanted to record 24/7). Brilliant camera.

I got rid of my Ring doorbell, mainly because of the subscription fee. Replaced with Aqara G4. Uses iCloud+ to store recordings and appears on Apple TV natively. But you don't get the nice Halloween and Christmas ring tones though

Never had a problem with the G4. I plan to hard wire when I change my porch but have used batteries. 6 rechargable AAs. I was dubious but they last about 4 months on average (although a bit less in winter). I think it's entirely dependent on the chime even if you hardwire. That's what you connect to and it keeps the actual doorbell unit light of functionality

Forgot to add RTSP support and Home Assistant integration which is the main reason (other than the white color) that I was looking to upgrade my two G4s. No mention if in the G400 but I expect that to be there but not mmWave or the Zigbee/Matter hub

I'm with you, hardwired to a transformer and I've really liked it (only had it for three weeks). It's worked great. I thought about the Ecobee camera but when I saw it had a subscription, I decided to pass (even though I really love my Ecobee Premium thermostat).

Is the Level Matter over Thread lock available in the UK, or do you even have that type of deadbolt? Discreet from the outside, and also HomeKey. They work great with the Matter/Thread update. I also have an Aqara U100 and it’s been great, but if you’re looking at the U200 or U300, you should go over to r/Aqara and see some of the posts. I’ve had a horrible time with the G4, but I think it’s that I’m trying to go wireless in a brick house. If you’re going to bridge the Ring, you might as well bridge a Reolink security system.

Here’s a comparison between my old G4 (top) and G410 (bottom) taken on the same mount just minutes apart via Home app. The resolution is even better on the native Aqara app.

POE is a massive massive deal. I have only had my G4's a few months and would absolutely upgrade to POE almost instantly. There simply aren't any POE HomeKit doorbells outside of one massively overpriced option. IMHO this is the #1 overlooked product right now. These things would sell like crazy. Love my G5 POE and is any other vendor had a reasonably priced POE doorbell I couldn't have an Aqara one right now.

I have the G4 and it does its job. However the negatives like others mentioned are: it’s clunky, orientation, doesn’t use existing chime. Positive: I have it hardwired and the connection is pretty reliable. Face recognition is also good

My house came with ecobee so I have that but don’t really use anything smart with it. Temp just sits in the dashboard. I use Abode for my security system. I’m a huge fan of Aqara. I have four G5 POE cameras, one G3 camera, two G4 doorbells, three U50 deadbolts and their lever lock but can’t recall the model number. A couple temp/humidity sensors to round it off. It all works extremely well.

Aqara. No subscription, saves to my 512gb SD cards in each ringer for front and back door (the ringer comes WITH the door bell), and then it saves those recordings from the SD cards to my local NAS, no subscription required. And works very well with my HomeKit, no subscription.

I have my G4 set up to show a notification and the doorbell camera feed on my Apple TV (it shows up on the corner of the TV screen). The notification can be triggered by video motion or doorbell push. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen it caused my apple TV and TV to turn on.

I'd second the recommendation to wait for the G410. My Aqara wasn't particularly reliable and finally died towards the end of its first year. The replacement provided was much better, especially after I paired it only with HomeKit, but still goes offline occasionally and randomly takes a long time for the video to appear.

Although you can stick with the doorbell, I really really do recommend the new Aqaura Smart doorbell. It can be wired or battery operated, and have fallen in love with it. Reason why I mentioned this, I’ve never had a good time with Logitech products specifically made for smart home use like the Apple Smart home water detect devices that they sell. I bought a Logitech circle home view camera .. worst decision of my life since they lacked on updating the software on their end, and have made the products pretty much unusable with connection losses, happening with hours or even minutes of first time on boarding… it’s been a living, nightmare, even after having them send me out a second product of it, same issue

Reliability is by far the #1. First the others eat batteries like candy so that it's gone. Video over wifi is laggy and not as reliable. Yes, my G4 work generally well but not near as responsive as my POE G5's. Many many complaints you see for wifi cameras are do to subpar wifi networks and not the cameras. Getting video off your wifi also frees it up for other uses. Similar to why zigbee and thread over highly recommended over wifi for other smart home devices. And while I think it's overplayed for the majority of users there is security. Wifi cams can be hacked. If you can wife a camera absolutely do so. Wifi is simply for convenience and understandably so as wiring a doorbell camera is not an easy task for most people but absolutely worth it if you can.

Aqara G4 or the new one G410 if you are able to wire it up. It’s been flawless with decent wifi. Incidentally I did the same and replaced my Ring Doorbell and removed it from my Homebridge hub.

Just one more tally mark for my Aqara G4. Once I got over its looks and size, I’ve got nothing negative to say about it. In fact, one negative (two pieces) went from a negative to a positive once I understood the rationale and saw it not fail under intense summer heat.

Aqara G4 fits the bill. However, it does eat through batteries pretty quickly. I ended up buying a plug in transformer and used it with my outdoor outlet. I find it tracks events much better when wired vs. on batteries.

My house was built in the 70s. I have apple tv + homepod as the homekit hub. Ecobee for thermostat, Aqara for smart camera doorbell (after trying out Ring and Eufy), Schlag for front door, Meross for garage door, a bunch of hue lights, a mix bag of light switches but slowly transition all to Lutron for reliability. As for camera itself, I still haven't found any good solutions that's reliable, I do have a bunch of Eufy that are not in my homekit. Personally, I wouldn't wait for the next best thing, because there will always be the next best thing, meanwhile I had to wait for the manufactures to catch up.

I love my G4's, get the 410. It's rare it's better to buy older tech. Even when newer tech has teething issues in the longer run the newer tech is the way to go. Get the 410.

I came from a very similar situation. I had a complete Ring setup with security system, a ton of ring cameras (three doorbells, two flood lights, two spot lights and two indoor cameras). We left the system when we sold the house. New place I decided I wanted to go with HomeKit as we are a complete Apple house. I did go with Abode for the security side. Does that price include the first year of monitoring? If not, yeah, the price is insane. I pieced together a Smart system on Amazon for $105. I added two motion sensors and four door sensors for a total of a bit over $200. But that didn't include monitoring which was $240 for a year. I then went with Aqara for the rest of the system. I have four G5 Pro POE cameras, two G4 doorbells, three U50 deadbolts, one G3 indoor camera, one U300, four water sensors and two temp sensors. So far everything is working fantastic with zero complaints. I have seen a few complaints on the U200 so I would look into those a little more before buying. I don't have any experience with the U300 yet as the building it was bought for hasn't been delivered yet. I like the fact that all the cameras also function as hubs so that side of the network is solid. I havent ventured into other vendors yet but likely will with some wall switches and try a cheaper vendor to see how that works with Matter. So far I have achieved my goal of multiple products under one app. I have multiple on my phone but my family only has the Apple Home App and accesses everything from there. It does not have the power of Home Assistant and has its limitations but it works. Very similar to iOS vs Android. If it covers the needs you have it works extremely well. One important thing that cannot be overlooked is your wifi network. If you have a single family home that isn't in a dense area you don't have to be fancy. I have a roughly 1500 square foot single story home with vinyl siding and simple sheetrock walls. I have an Eero 6 and it works great. Currently just using one but will use one of the extenders in my man cave when it arrives. If you have the money and don't mind more complexity Ubiquiti is the gold standard in cameras and networking but you will pay for it. There cameras and door bells are top notch as is there networking equipment. I do have experience with their networking but not the cameras. I considered it but could not justify the cost. I use a simple TP-link POE switch for my cameras and hard wired gear. So far I have had zero issues with the network and don't anticipate any. I have used this same Eero system in my last brick house that was 2400 square, albeit with both extenders in use, with also zero issues. edit The one thing I could not find was a good HomeKit smoke detector. There is the Owl but so fare has pretty mixed reviews. I ended up just using the Abode smoke detector listener.

I have the Agara G4 (the version prior to the G400/410) and it works very well with HomeKit. I set it up in the Aqara app and then used the app to add it to my HomeKit home. I added a micro SD card to the Aqara for video storage. It can be configured within the Home app to be triggered by motion (people, faces, packages) and I can replay the video within the Home app. It came be set up to show notifications on an Apple TV. I also bought some Aqara G100 cams that also work great with HomeKit ($31 apiece).

I went down this path last year and ended up with the Aqara G4. I have batteries in it and it’s wired so I don’t fear it’ll ever really die. I also like the feature of having the chime where I want it instead of using the previous door bell chime. I also wanted their smart door lock, so was already going into the Aqara ecosystem and they have both been great for my very basic smart home set up. Will add their indoor security camera later this year.
