I had a Samsung Jetbot that broke after a year and a half, and would have cost me $150 to fix. I went back and forth on fixing it, but ultimately realized that I could buy a brand new robot for that price. The Roborock Q5 happened to be on sale for exactly that price, so I ended up buying it, and have been using it obsessively to clean up the buildup from the past several months. I didn’t realize how much dust and hair had accumulated on my carpets in that time (I live in an apartment, and don’t own another vacuum), and looking at what a difference it’s made to have a freshly-vacuumed carpet has just given me so much tranquility. I have a cat, but really the buildup had come from me, because I have long hair that tends to shed. There was literally a mouse-sized amount of hair tangled up in the side brush after running the vacuum four times, with the main rollers covered in hair. The advice that was given to me by folks in this subreddit is to make sure you get a robot with Lidar. Lidar is the mapping technology that actually allows the robovac to clean every inch of the floor. The robovacs without Lidar just kind of bounce around, and aren’t nearly as effective at cleaning because they don’t keep track of where they’ve been. They go in zig-zag patterns, and Lidar robots go back and forth. It’s more expensive, but to me the difference is worth it. I’ll also say that what convinced me to get a robovac in the first place is that someone told me it forces them to keep their floors clean. You can’t have your floors cluttered because it will block the robot and stop it from doing its job, or even get it tangled up. So that’s just one more reason to get one.

That's the really, really old ones. They're not great. The new ones map the environment, and do a proper pass of all areas. Like the Roborock Q8 or Q5 are great.

Unless you pay $1000 for a really good model even the Roborock Q5 is not gonna be that great at toy detection. I have 3 cats and 2 dogs and while I love my Roborock I cannot run it without picking up things left on the floor. You’ll have to get used to picking stuff up no matter what. Roborock I also way better tech than roomba and cheaper! Mine was a Q5+ with self emptying station and cut down the pet hair exponentially. And I have 3 cats and 2 dogs.

I have a Roborock Q5+, I absolutely love it. Did a lot of research before buying. The newer ones have better obstruction detection but as long as I don’t leave things on the floor (toys, socks, etc) it gets everything. I have 2 dogs and 3 cats, it’s a major lifesaver for me. I have it scheduled to run twice a day and it also self empties. It does best running often rather than once a week. If you wait longer between running it—the hair gets overwhelming for it. Roborock is pretty solid as a brand and has only gotten better. Once I have the cash I will definitely be buying their new vacuum mop version.

Newer versions will pick up toys and move them. The tech is much better than roomba or shark. But by “manual” it just means turning it on and letting it run, you don’t actually have to watch it. Automatic scheduling just has it run without you pushing any buttons. But honestly it’s made me better about picking things up off my floor.

great news! Almost ANY roborock you get (for that matter, any robot) is going to far surpass your i7 experience. I would not grab the Q5, TBH. There is, actually a very big difference between $500 and $1000 robots, but if I may recommend... I'd say the best CURRENT value on a Roborock is the Curv/Edge, the S8 MaxV Ultra and the QRevo MaxV. While the Saros are great... I don't think they're better \*enough\* than the models listed about to justify the price. Also, I'd wait for Prime Day, regardless. Also, I test robots for a living for Lifehacker, and am not sponsored by anyone, and test robots in my very real house.

Older roombas are simple, reliable, durable, effective, and cheap. But they don't have smart navigation or mapping where you can ask them to clean specific areas. If you want navigation they become less cheap and less durable. I have a 10yo 600 series roomba and a new Roborock Q5. Q5 is great but I'm skeptical that it's going to last as long.

I left another reply to that comment, there’s one used like new on there for 200 right now. I think it does great. All robo vacuums are going to be less effective in rugs than a regular one, but mine in the living room does well enough that I don’t have to do it myself all that often. Anything on our floors gets picked up, and it’s good in corners and against walls as well

If I were you, I’d spend a bit more for a combo and look for a reliable and good vacuum only model for the top carpet only floor which is generally cheaper than a combo model. I’d also consider the dreame L40S Pro Ultra (£799) is going to be better for heavy fur shedders since it has the onboard fur compression feature which works when it’s vacuuming to best utilize the dustbin’s space that has a volume of 395mL. The dual brushes mean it’s better for fur pickup on carpets but won’t be as good for just vacuuming carpets compared to vacuum only models . The E25 will be better for raw mopping performance which is better suited for homes with more hard floors than carpet. The E25 will also be a good option for the bottom floor. I’d get something like a cheap second hand roomba or a roborock Q5 or Q8 with or without an autoempty station for the upper floor.

Yes! My entire downstairs is hardwood and tile. Vacuuming and mopping works well on both. I have it do two passes, so it makes a checkered pattern. So even if it misses something the first time, it'll usually pick it up the second pass. I have two Roborocks, a Slim and a Q5+.

For that budget, vacuum only. And honestly even they might not handle the shaggy rug. Most robots can't. If you're okay with vacuuming the rug by hand, and basically creating a no-go zone around it in the robot app to stop them getting stuck, a roborock q series vacuum-only model might be decent.

Robot vacuums have good quality control now, like Roborock, Eufy, and Dreame. There were no problems with my Eufy L60 and my Roborock Q5. I can't give you a definitive answer based on time, but I believe quality is also important.

Whirlpool’s solid and reliable, especially for dryers. Samsung/LG are flashy but can be hit or miss and LG is usually better of the two. For robot vacs, check out Roborock Q5+ or S7+..it is great with hair, better than Ecovacs IMO. Stick to budget-friendly, easy-to-move stuff since it’s a rental.

I picked up the Roborock q5+ last year for like 300 on a sale on Amazon and I think it’s great. I have it set up with my Alexa system to be voice prompted as well. It was a little bit clunky to do that, because it wants you to say something along the lines of “ask Roborock to clean the kitchen” or something specifically worded like that. I just set up a routine for me just saying “vacuum the kitchen” and having it do that command internally so I don’t have to be so specific with the wording. Just checked and it’s normally priced at 700 these days though. One of the cheaper models would probably still be good though, or if you can find it used or something

This! I am so interested in others schedules. I just upgraded from an irobot about 4 years old to a roborock q5. It is amazing!!! I don't have enough details to share yet as it has been less than one week. Right now, I have it on the same schedule as I did the irobot. Every weekday at 6am, and every weekend day 10am. The previous robot didn't have mopping -- I have it set to only mop once a week right now. But I have seen a lot of folks say they only run every other day. For what it is worth, I have a 1200sqft single floor house. All LVT with a few short carpet runners. Dry environment so LOTS of dust. 4 to 5 dogs (we run a rescue). Humans are just my husband and myself.

Don't spend $1000 on one, go for one around $350-$400 with an auto emptying dock. Roborock is my favorite. You'll get 99% the same features and function as the $1k one, and if you like it then you can get a second one and still be under $1k!

I was in a pretty similar boat. The big question will be your flooring situation - is it all hard surfaces, carpet, rugs, or a mix? Robot vacuums do fine if you don’t have any carpets or rugs. We use the Roborock Q5+ for our flooring where we don’t have carpets or rugs. I don’t find their hair to be an issue, though it does catch on the brush over time that you can remove with a screwdriver. The app works well but as this is a more budget model (which is usually still in your range), it lacks mopping and object avoidance. If you have carpet or a few rugs, you’ll need an electric powerhose vacuum on top of or instead of a robovac, depending on the degree and height of your carpeting. This would mean something akin to Miele C3 (select models) or Sebo E3.

I've had a few robovacs over the years, and I have to say the Roborock Q5 has been my favorite. Great suction power, it's pretty damned good at following maps, and it's low maintenance. I've been using it to clean my upper floor everyday for the last 2 years. Downstairs I have a Roomba i5+ and an M6 mop in my kitchen. The i5+ does a decent job on wood floors, but despite having a camera and the ability to ID objects, it still gets stuck under furniture a few times a week. The mop part of it is decent, but the tank on it is tiny and requires constant refilling. The M6+ does a good job at keeping up the kitchen floor, but again I have to tend to it 3x a week. Roborock is probably the brand you want to go for.

I have a Roborock Q5+, which is self-emptying. I think it was about $350 on sale. I love it! It was probably my best purchase of last year. I run it every single day. Does it take care of all of my dog's hair? No, I still need to vacuum once a week or so. But is it way better than nothing? Yes. It probably does better with short hair than long (luckily my dog is short-haired). What it really has trouble with is my own shoulder-length hair, which just gets wrapped around the brush. So I can see not liking it as much if you have an Afghan hound or some other breed with luscious, flowing locks.

Vacuum only: roborock q5 or q8 max+ or the switchbot k10+ with a tangle resistant all rubber brush. Vacuum and mop combo: MOVA P10 Pro ultra at 399 (I think on Amazon US). This is a de facto last gen flagship and the antitangle TriCut brush (may ship in a bundle or needs to be bought separately from MOVA/dreame but AliExpress resellers can be cheaper) worked great with my long fur corgi’s fur and tumbleweeds. This one is least likely to get stuck compared to the previous options. Compared to other vacuum and mop combos under 400 which are solid budget robots, the p10 pro ultra blows them out of the water. As for the curved legs, I think the MOVA may at first try to ride up them then eventually learn how to properly avoid them. I have the MOVA V50 ultra and after it humped tripod legs on the first day, it was able to “learn” how to smoothly follow the tripod legs and avoid riding up on them on the third day (second day produced mixed results).

Pay attention that this is an older model of the Q5 max+, it doesn’t have the duoroller. You absolutely need at least the duorollers for dog hair. Attached a picture of mine (with the duoroller) for reference. Ask the seller to send u a picture of the bottom before u commit. If it’s the single roller, don’t bother or negotiate the price down. https://preview.redd.it/s561ju9xwmmf1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd1f16f8d75206bbea36bfca231221477e916591

Unfortunately it's all in the market pressures, certain sets of requirements or categories of robots have been totally eliminated. For example it's really hard to find much choice of robot mops, everybody has switched to making combination all-in-one robots which are much more expensive. It can be really frustrating. What I will say, avoid models with AI obstacle avoidance camera systems mounted on the front bumper. This should help limit privacy concerns. A lidar sensor can give a basic layout of your house and furniture placement but it can't really see details, it's basically a 2-D image. Edit: obviously all images are 2-D lol. What I meant is, it's only seeing your house through a really thin laser beam shining out from the top "turret". This means it can see shapes on that line of sight and nothing else, basically it doesn't steer that laser up or down. It can't see details of people, pets, objects not at floor level etc. It'll see four furniture legs, with no way to tell if it's a sofa or a dining table. Obviously having a literal camera is a totally different story there. And luckily a lot of the more basic options lack cameras (for now anyway). Models like the eufy L60 or Roborock Q5 might be ones to look at.

I’m hesitant to compare to the S7, because I don’t know what that has. In terms of cutting edge technology, Roborock has some crazy new things coming—like one with a robot arm that will pick up and move objects in the way. And it will raise itself up over transitions, like to a carpet. The Saros10 model came out in the past year and is supposed to be fantastic—at $1200 to $1600. I’m just saying that for $179, the Q8 is better than what I have. There are 2 rubber rollers on the bottom (rather than one), and it’s great for dust & pet hair. The phone app is easier to use and edit. I’ve had no problems with docking or finding the dock. And the small-area-clean button works great, which my Q5 didn’t have.

Really? I have two Roborocks Q5s and they are definitely inferior to iRobot’s S9 which I also have. Worse mapping, worse suction by far. The Q5 struggles with any elevation differences: it struggles to get over thin rugs or floor transition strips. That said, I got the Q5 at a cheap price and it’s been OK. I would just rather the S9 if the price was equal. Of course, Roomba has its own problems.
