I've been using the same JBL charge for probably 10 years. When/if it dies, I'll go buy another one just like it.

My charge 3 lasted nearly 5 years of outdoors use in the Midwest. Summer, winter, forgotten about overnight, it was a tank. Side story: when it recently broke, I ordered another... Or so I thought. I was a little tipsy and bought the boombox instead. This giant box arrives, and let me tell ya, that thing POUNDS.

Jawbone did start it. They would have been around longer if they didn't do a "Sears" aka instead of sticking with something they are good at they went into different categories. The JBL Charge kinda replaced them but the charge wasn't as good as the Pulse. But I think the Charge 3 was what started JBL to be great. I remember when the Pulses actually sounded great the Pulse 3 still destroys the newer ones and the coolest looking one.

I have had a Soundlink Mini for about the same time. Just sold it though, got a surprisingly good price for such an old device. The truth is I never really liked the sound quality. Bought a couple X600's a couple months ago, and they blow the SL Mini away in sound quality. Also they're louder and have bigger batteries, and cost about the same as I paid for the SL Mini back in the day. The SL Mini just sounded too dark for me, to much bloated bass and muddled voices. Talk radio was annoying as voices don't go through very clearly. I probably expected too much from such a small device, but I was glad to learn that BT speakers have progressed in quality in the meantime. If I was looking for a replacement I'd definitely look at either an X600 for the sound quality, or a JBL Charge for the fantastic battery life.

I wouldn't recommend any Earfun speaker to someone who isn't very tech savy. Every Earfun speaker sounds mediocre out of the box and they need EQing. I really like my UBOOM X, but I just can't recommend it to my mom. That's why my mom has a JBL Charge. Also, any of the stock (normal or OLUV's) EQs are way too focused on deep bass, which isn't the best with classical music. And it's not very portable I think, it's rather huge.

Yeah, realistically that isn't going to happen, replacing 10 speakers with 1-3 is tough as it is, much less when those 10 speakers were designed for the space they are in and those 1-3 are jammed into an enclosure with the amp and battery in a single unit... I mean the closest you will get is a one of the big JBL Party Boxes which honestly isn't very portable at like 75 pounds and 45 inches tall, not to mention they run a grand or so. If you just want decent sound quality -AND- portability the JBL Flip, Charge, or even the Extreme series are pretty decent, but for high end quality you are going to be going well over the $500 mark... KEF, Bowers & Wilkens, Sonos, etc. And Bose... Yeah, I am not a huge fan... I would take the Infinity system in my Hyundai over it in a heartbeat for sound quality.

JBL Charge is a good pick, or the Flip series if you're more concerned about size, although they are both pretty compact. Soundcore Motion Boom is a good choice as well, however it's a bit more awkwardly shaped if you're trying to fit it in a bag.

I've had most of the lineup from JBL. The Go, Clip, flip, charge, extreme, and boombox. The only one I wasn't really happy with was the clip...it was being sold in a two pack and yet lacked the capability of virtually every JBL speaker which is to be able to link up to other JBLs and play in stereo. They're all good for their size/price. Obviously the Go doesn't thump like the boombox does but it's a fraction of the price and size. I think any of them up through the Charge can be charged with a USB cable then the bigger ones like the extreme/boombox have a proprietary charging cord. They're all at least somewhat water resistant and rugged all the way up to the Boombox and the Extreme being submersible. I remember when I first got the Boombox, being at a pool and my brother asked if I was worried about the speaker being so close to said pool. I said it's supposed to be waterproof and I then proceeded to throw it in the pool. It was totally fine. Battery life on them are all respectable, and at least personally, I haven't had a battery fail yet. The extreme and even more so the Boombox, seem to last forever. More recently I bought a Sony xg500 (Boombox equivalent) when it was on sale. Not a bad speaker, has good mids and highs, but the bass was a little lackluster and overall it couldn't get quite as loud as my 5 year old Boombox. It has an inferior IP rating compared to the Boombox as well. The only thing it really has over the Boombox, that I didn't even realize for a while, and it may or may not be a positive depending on the person, is it has some lighting effects on the side that strobe with music. Overall the Boombox is really the better buy for sure. The only other speakers I've heard that were as good or better were some bose ones, but they didn't have much bass, and the ones I saw didn't seem too rugged. The UE speakers I've heard were fine but not as good as JBLs

My JBL charge 3 is waaay more than loud enough to use in the shower, and is totally waterproof (can even be submerged up to several metres). This is why although i now have a Minirig 4 / Sub 3 (2.1 setup) i am going to keep my JBL charge 3 (2.0 setup) for use at the beach, in the rain etc. As Minirigs are not waterproof at all unfortunately. The only thing about JBL’s is they are bass heavy, which is great for electronic / dance / hiphop / reggae music, but not so good for podcasts etc. Still perfectly fine, just not as clear as say, a Minirig

Given that you're here in the BIFL sub, I suspect you'll be happy to get stuff from them even though it's usually more expensive than Amazon. They sell a mix of original and aftermarket parts and are very upfront about that when you browse parts, but they have all been very high quality in my experience I put an aftermarket battery from them in my fiancee's Note 20 a few weeks ago and she said it's at least as good as the original battery when it was brand new and I've had the same experience with my own phone batteries, screens, laptop parts, etc

Not a tip for a specific speaker but check if the people you want to train with, if you're a group that is, already have speakers. In my local group people generally have JBL-speakers and being able to link multiple ones is superb. I have good experiences with both JBL Charge-models and UE Boom-models in general but mostly older models and I know JBL changed their protocol for linking units so be sure to do your research.

Y'all sleeping on the Tribit, I don't think it would be as much clarity as the JBL, but it would probably be louder. I just sold my Charge 3, and it was decent, but I haven't tried the newer generations. Soundcore Units are notoriously good bang for the buck, but I don't know about that model. There are a few YouTube channels that do comparisons of similarly priced units side by side. You might get lucky and find a couple of these in the same video. What do I personally use? I don't mind lugging around a big-ass speaker on wheels to get room shaking results, So I currently have an Ion Explorer Xtreme which can probably be found in a similar price bracket If shopped cleverly. ??

Tribit Micro is a great pocket speaker. Earfun Uboom X is a high value bass blaster. Bose soundlink flex is a nice middle ground speaker and the JBL flip & Charge have good bass for the size.

JBL Flip and Charge are solid speakers and not bad values "when you get them on sale". Xiaomi Outdoor is going for about $50 which puts it into Earfun UboomL territory. About the same weight as the Flip and UboomL too.

I mean it would obviously kill the Clip. It’s bigger and more powerful. No brainer. I think the question becomes is it something that is worth it when the Flip is out there. The size difference can’t be that much that you’d pay for a Grip over a Flip knowing the sound on the Flip is way better. I know price is a factor too but anyone buying any JBL speaker should be on the lookout for sales which usually are abundant. I bought a new Flip 7 for less than a $100 on Woot. They have them new for $99 and they had a 1 day only 10% off anything on the site so I paid way less than the $150 asking price. And even if u don’t get that particular price Walmart had them at $119 a couple days ago. Basically JBL speakers are ALWAYS on sale somewhere. Basic Google search will help. Basically I don’t see why anyone would get a Grip over the Flip. Either get the cheaper Clip so it’s super portable or get the Flip with the superior sound and the still very portable size of a basic water bottle. And I won’t bring up the Charge as personally I think it’s easily JBL’s best speaker ( partyboxes notwithstanding as those are great too but they pricey as hell ). For the size and sound it has, the Charge is top teir. And yep I got mine for way less than the $199 asking price, brand new.

Yeah I have a JBL Charge 3 that I've had since 2019, we used it as outdoor sound in a restaurant for 3 years, so was in use every day in that period. Just fixed the charging port that was getting worn out, but the battery is still strong. Also have a 10 year + Bose SoundLink 3 that I wheel out when I want quality sound, I'm using it sparingly as I know the battery can't last forever but the sound quality is soooo good.

JBL charge series is always a great buy, With a $150 budget. I have had my JBL charge 3 since 2018, only recently upgraded to the party box series, because I wanted something bigger and with way more bass. For a desk speaker the charge 4-5 is perfect, it has enough bass with EQ added. The flip and the other smaller ones that you can clip on, are going to be slightly quiet compared to the charge series. The charge series is the happy medium between good sound and portability.

Charge has more bass. Flip is lighter more portable. One of my favorite speaker of all time is the JBL Clip 4. But the 5 is better because the power button doesn’t get hit by accident like the 4. Smaller speaker but it sounds great and extremely portable and great battery life.
