Drop/Sennheiser PC38X Gaming Headset. I love 'em. These are open back. I don't know if Sennheiser makes a closed back version anymore. You get Sennheiser sound in a headset. Mic mutes when you flip it up. No software.

Shocked that nobody has mentioned the Audeze Maxwell. Given your use case and budget they would seem to be a top 3 choice. I've owned a pair for quite a while and they are honestly amazing at both content consumption and also gaming. They come with a mic built in and you don't need a separate DAC/AMP. The Sennheiser 560S and PX38X are also great options.

They're effectively the old Sennheiser Gaming One with some tweaks, which were, indeed, great headphones. No idea why Sennheiser stopped making them in favour handing most of the branding to drop and going about doing something else. I've got the GSP 600, PC38X and a H6 Pro - all these are similar and they're all great.

I'd probably recommend Drop/ Sennheiser PC38x for multiplayer/ directional audio and HiFiMan Edition XS (or perhaps Sundara if you have small ears; not comfortable for me) for cinematic single player games for fairly affordable headsets within a few hundred bucks. I've read good things about the Audeze Maxwell. Going much higher will probably require an amp and get MUCH pricier. For PC and listening to music, I use an HE1000SE, which will challenge your statement about budget not mattering. It's by far the best set of headphones I've ever used for gaming (including the also excellent Sennheiser HD 490 Pro, which I also own) or music but definitely not low budget.

What you want is a headset, not headphones, headphones don't typically have mics. What your friend needs is an open backed headset, open back means they don't even physically block out sound, you can typically have both cups on and still hear your surroundings. I recommend the PC38X from Sennheiser.

I own a Pair of Sennheiser Pc38x and Dt770 Pro. Im extremely pleased with the sennheisers. The dt770 are more detailed but the Sennheisers have better staging and are was more pleasant tone wise.

Don't need to get too complicated. You're asking enthusiasts what you should buy, and they will suggest enthusiast-grade products like DACs and dedicated mics. You don't need any of that. Listen to people who suggest a quality headset (most of the time are not typical gaming headset companies) that don't make your wallet cry. I've used the Sennheiser PC38X for years now. It's an open-back headset, very comfortable, legit headphone quality sound, built-in mic, for like $189 (used to be $139 sadly it went up). Many enthusiasts suggest it.

Yeah totally agree with that, but the turtle beach was insanely bad. I have Sennheiser open backs and while the bass isn't anything to write home about, it's not a noticeable thing.

Hey OP, I just bought the Audeze Maxwell and while they seem like good quality, I don't know if I can stand the weight of them compared to my Samsung wh1000xm's (I don't use these for gaming, but you could). If you are looking for wired and open back, I cannot recommend enough the drop x sennheiser pc37x. At the price point, I think they are great, the mic quality is solid, and they are less than half of the Maxwell, $130ish I believe. They have mostly great reviews and have been around for a while, and other subs used to recommend these all the time, maybe still do. There is a PC38x version now, but I haven't used those and I'm not sure that sennheiser is involved in those. Edit: Guess I responded to the wrong person but it was still pretty relevant to your post. I would disagree pretty strongly with needing a separate mic. Why pay $50-$100 more for something that is in no way necessary. I have never had a single complaint against the mic on the pc37x (using them for ~6 years now), and I doubt anyone on the other end would ever complain about lack of clarity barring some actual issue. I also have multiple friends who have these and I have never had any issues hearing or understanding them. Yes, you can get better, but I strongly feel the return for the money spent at that point is really minimal and frankly, unnecessary. It becomes much more hobbyist and how much money do you want to sink into it to have the best or to match the streamers (all this coming from a guy who was the pc37x, wh1000xm2, dt770 pro with a schiit dac and amp, and just bought the maxwells). Just my opinion though. If OP has the money, and space, go ahead and get what you enjoy. If these are his first real "gaming" headphones and OP is budget conscious, then I standby the PC37x.

The 560S is very flat and "anemic," as some audiophiles say (but shhh, don't criticize Sennheiser). Funny enough, the PC38x is actually pretty good and includes a mic for gaming needs.

I'm a sennheiser fan. People love the HD560's but I like the PC38X which is very similar and has a boom arm mic. The HD660S2 are definitely superior to both and sound the best to me but don't have a big soundscape. I went with the HD490 Pro because with a little tweaking of the EQ, they can sound as good as the 660S2 but have the huge soundscape of the $2000 800S

No mic is fine and a detachable wire is fine? You should be buying sennheisers... The 490 pro can be bargained down to about $315 and is the best you can buy. If you don't want to negotiate them, go for the 560s. If you decide you really need a mic it's the PC38x. Wireless sucks compared to wired at every price point to be fair so if you're looking for the bet performance you can get for around $300 it's wired all the way.

I had them and they sucked. Loud white noise in the background and the head straps are terribly designed, had to buy customised straps to get them to sit comfortably. But that didn't fix the fact that the headset weighs a ton.

Best one is Sennheiser + Epos Drop PC38X. I use it for both PC and PS5 gaming. It's very comfortable and has a good microphone. I also mostly play single player games myself. I like this headset so much I bought a second pair just in case they stop manufacturing this headset.

If you want the Best Gaming Headphones you would want Headphones with an immersive soundstage experience. Open Backs are the best performers for this purpose. if you're playing single player or FPS competitive games it heavily benefits from that, because the directional sound cues shine really well. The Endgame of immersion would be the Sennheiser HD800 S's though they are very expensive in the $2k price point it's audiophile level for what it gives you. I use the HD 490 Pro's for Gaming & Musicality and they're incredible. The Maxwells have fantastic sound reproduction & clarity though I wouldn't compare them against the HD 490 Pro's because the sound signature wouldn't be as noticeable to my ears against Open Backs & Planar's. the thing with Open Backs is it kinda wrap's around your Ear Drums adding to that depth of imaging which I really enjoy. You can't go wrong with Closed Backs either they isolate you completely adding detailed clarity & crisp high's. Anyways I'll list a few Closed or Open Backs Options 1. Audeze Maxwell: $300 Closed Back Planar Magnetic Wireless Gaming Headphones with Dedicated Microphone 2. Sennheiser Pc38x: $197 Wired Closed Back Gaming Headphones with Dedicated Microphone. 3. ATH-r50x $169 Open Back Studio Headphones 4. Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X Studio Headphones. or 5. Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro Closed Back Gaming Headphones with dedicated Microphone.

My usual recommendation, the Sennheiser PC38x aren't on sale currently but a good budget alternative is the Drop + EPOS H3X. https://drop.com/buy/drop-epos-h3x-gaming-headset?utm_source=linkshare Otherwise, I also heavily recommend the SHP9500 with a standalone mic like the V-Moda boompro. https://a.co/d/4rfCj3j https://a.co/d/fqkO2do

Open back let's sound through in both directions so only works in a quietish space where no one else is bothered by your gaming sounds. Gaming headsets are mostly bad headphones with microphones and wireless connectivity so what you mean by good should be more defined. Sony and Sennheiser don't have gaming headsets (beyond Sony Pulse/Inzone which aren't good and Sennheiser PC37x and PC38x which are good but likely not available) and Logitech ia firmly im the bad headphones department. An actually good setup is usually a pair if proper headphones and a separate mic. If that's of interest then I can rec some optipns, but of not then just go with the most expensive Logitech for example.

Headset with a mic in that price range is a bit difficult. I'd look for a used or a discounted PC38X. They do go on sale from time to time, so should come near your budget. There's also the older brother - PC37X right in your budget. I'd also really consider those. Look up a review, like one from Joshua Valour, and choose between those two.

The DT770 Pro is a closed back, and to a lot of people it have a little too much bass, but even worst spikes in the treble. So for overall better, more pleasant and more consistent experience the PC38x (typo in my original post), I would choose it over the DT770pro

The PC38x would be the better product, and I've seen them go for $150 or sometimes lower. TBH though for the price difference I'd just opt for the EPOS. $20 and you're going to have a hard time finding anything better for $100 or less.

It's a great headset, if you can get it, you'll have no issues with drivers - it's just plug it in and use it, dual 3.5mm. Sounds good, is open back, and the mic is great too. Very comfortable.

Open if you have a quite environment. If not closed. It's impossible to use open backs if you have for example someone watching TV in the same room. Also to get one of each over time is good. I use my openbacks 95% of the time. But when mixing low frequency content I switch, the difference is massive. Also as u mentioned, even if it comes down to brand. Most open backs are more comfortable. Can do severel hours without any problems with my senheisers. But over an hour with my ath M50 is torture. Last input, just for getting s good listening experience closed are much better. (All above is just my personal experience and over time I have learned that its a huge factor chosing equipment)

Curious your thoughts on the comparison between the two. I'm a big fan of sennheiser open backs, and have been running the Game Ones since 2017, but the cable kept breaking and I wanted something wireless. Have recently tried the Maxwells out, but not blown away by them yet, could be an eq issue dunno.

Yup definitely lets in outside noise, so that can be a no go for some. I can't imagine going back to closed back now lol. It's insane how it can throw sounds way behind you (when a game's audio is engineered well that is) and create an immersive experience.
