Others made good suggestions and I will second the 599 and the DT770 for comfort. For frequent moving around others have suggested BT adapters. I am wondering if you would consider a modular cable system like Hart Audio Cable provides. I just their long interconnect on the equipment side and the 18" cable on the headphone side. I get up a few times an hour and the quick disconnect works well for me.

SHP9500 and HD599 are two of the most comfortable pairs I've tried. SHP9500 being the "most loose" on my head when wearing it (if I tilt my head upward or downward, it would fall). HD599 is like a "less clampy" HD6XX. I can wear it for a long time without getting headache.

I would not get Sennheisers, they recently shipped me defective products (unbalanced audio channels (left right) and bad quality compared to the used ones I have now) and have ghosted my support tickets for a month now. If you want Sennheisers get them used and make sure they are from 2021 or earlier.

I would recommend getting him studio headphones and a microphone separately, rather than these gaming headsets. What is your budget? I imagine it's around \~$150-200 judging by the price of some of these? Shame you didn't ask before Prime Day... The 560S would have been on sale in that range. You could go with the **Sennheiser HD 599** for $116. A good option. **Audio-Technica ATHAD700X** for $120 is another good one. (My only issue with the Audio Technicas are, I have to use a large-ish hair tie on the headband to wear these comfortably. Otherwise it's too loose. But I still love these headphones.) Beyerdynamics headphones sometimes go on sale for $130, but I'm not seeing any right now that low. They also can be harder to drive, so that's probably ok to avoid for now. I didn't for the 990's in Val, but maybe that was just me. And for a microphone. I own quite a few, but one of the best one you can buy right now without spending a $100+ is the **EPOS Gaming B20** for $23. I consider it a premium sounding mic, but its discontinued so it's been super cheap. Punches way above it's pirce. I use it over my Blue Yeti, but not over my Wave3... both $100+ mics. So that in total ballparks around $150 for something I'd consider better than gaming accessories.

No one here said Hexa is endgame or flagship-tier. What I did say and still stand by is that it delivers audiophile-level sound quality (i.e., high-fidelity, neutral tuning, detailed mids) for under $100, especially when compared to the bloated, muddy tuning of most gaming headsets. And that's objectively true unless you're redefining "audiophile" as "$300+ only," which is just gatekeeping and uninformed like i stated earlier. Also, mocking gear as "Chinese" as if that disqualifies performance is just lazy. You realize brands like Hifiman, SMSL, Topping, and Moondrop are all Chinese and respected across audiophile communities? Price-to-performance from Chi-Fi is why the landscape has shifted so hard the past five years. OP has a Rode mic great, so that already frees him from needing a headset mic. The question was headphones or headset under $100 with audiophile sound for gaming, and yeah, Truthear Hexa or Moondrop Aria absolutely check that box. Just because something isn't your preferred form factor or price tier doesn't mean it's "trash." If you've actually listened to Hexa or Zero Red with a proper DAC and still feel that way, fair enough. But if you're just dismissing it from the spec sheet and origin country, that says more about you than the gear.

Sennheiser HD 599 headphones. Lightweight but sturdy, great sound for music, and I frequently see them available for less than $200. They are open back headphones, which means the speaker cups are vented so that the sound sounds more natural, and it also lets the cups breathe a bit more so your ears don't get as sweaty. If you're worried about noise isolation and other people in the room hearing what you're listening to, you can get one of their closed back models.

Gaming headsets are garbage. Get a proper pair of headphones and attach an antlion modmic or similar product. *Edit* also make sure you're using a proper DAC. Something cheaper but still good. Sennheiser HD 599s for example. Can (and should) spend more if you can but I don't know your budget. People are strange man. Will spend hundreds/thousands on getting the game to run amazingly and then use cheap ass garbage audio. Gaming is dual sensory (tri really)

You need an amp/dac for most of these headphones. If you like bass heavy headphones all of these options are bad. I would think about getting the Fiio FT1 given how easy they are to power. The HD599 is a good option too. You don't really need a dac/amp but both would benefit from one

At least looking at the soundguys.com frequency response curves, the Sonoflow SE's seem to have less factory bass roll off than the ATH-M20XBT's, so if you want to just have good bass out of the box, then maybe go with the Sonoflow SE's. However, the ATH-M20XBT's have a similar bass roll off to my pair of Sennheiser HD 599 SE's, and I find these to have good bass for me after some EQ, so if you're fine with some EQ, you could pick up the ATH-M20XBT's if you prefer them. Honestly, assuming you just get a generally good pair of headphones with a fairly neutral sound profile, having good bass out of the box doesn't matter *that* much since you can always tweak the sound profile with an EQ.

You can look into setting up an EQ on your phone/desktop, a good pair will have the power to respond well to it, and offer a variety of profiles without distorting. So theoretically, you could EQ it to flat when practicing, and something more to your tastes for normal listening. I use Equaliser APO and PEACE on Windows, and Wavelet on Android with a pair of Sennheisers HD599s.

When talking about sound quality specifically, there is nothing inherent to gaming headphones that make them better than 'regular' headphones for the same budget. Their main selling points are usually convenience (integrated mic, in-line controls, wireless, etc) and aesthetic. Well-vetted dedicated headphones will usually offer better raw performance. With that said, I would say using the XM5's might not be the best choice if you plan on using them wireless; bluetooth comes with fairly high latency that can affect the experience (most gaming sets use 2.4Ghz wireless which is better in this regard). In my opinion, a decent wired set and a dedicated mic are the way to go if your situation allows. I'm a big fan of the HD 599's as my general use PC/gaming set; sound great, exceptionally comfortable for long sessions, and can often be had for ~$80.

I've always used open back but i kind of want to try a closed back, although the HD599 has been a nice open back for me. Im not sure what would be better for music/studio stuff. Before buying the HD599, I contemplated the DT brand. But the HD599 was on sale for a great price. If you had to pick one open back, and one closed back for under 1k each, which would they be? And the number one priority being sound quality? Thanks for your time!

Beyerdynamic's house sound is based on emulating a speaker, being heard by a microphone, in an anechoic chamber (imagine foam spikes everywhere and no echo). Some people like this sound: I find it to sound thin and bright sounding, if I listen too long they actually make my ears hurt. Sennheiser's house sound is mostly based on trying to emulate a speaker, being heard by a microphone, in a music studio or home living room with a bit of extra bass and diffuse sound. I, personally, like this a little better. The HD 599 is an older model, it tries to have extra bass and softens the clarity of things a little bit; I think this is good for people who sometimes feel overstimulated by sound, and maybe want to take it easy. The HD 560S actually is a newer model, with more balanced lows, mids, and highs, plus more clarity. Both of them use the same removable cable (and so does another headphone I have from Ultrasone), and you can find pretty cheap replacement cables that have a microphone in them.

Yo great review! I'm a newbie in the hobby and i currently run an old and cheap hd599. I would like to upgrade to something around 300 bucks (i could spend just a little bit more if it really worth it). I dont have any desktop dac/amp or anything like that, so i would consider only easy to drive headphones that i can plug into my laptop jack (if anything i would buy something like a jm6 pro or a jm20 max, nothing more for now). I play fps games (overwatch, valorant, r6) and single player (elden ring, the witcher, dark souls, halo, spiderman...). I usually listen to hiphop and classical music, i really like the mid range of the hd599 but they lack a little bit of clarity and there's a bit too much bass around 200-300hz. Right now i'm stuck between the 490 pro or 550. What would you recomend (considering eq)? Thanks to everyone who will reply for your time, really appreciate it🙏

They are quite good in all the aspects, but the bloated upper bass can interfere with hearing some sounds when there are a lot of explosions going on Philips SHP9500 - open back over ear (big, but shallow), $50 or even less on AliExpress promos, they feel probably the most spacious of the headphones I'm listing, they are quite decent, but I've sometimes struggled with front image in Warzone, so when looking at a wall behind which enemy was running I was sometimes losing the sense of the exact spot he is at, but honestly Warzone just has bad audio, and I feel like you even have to set it differently depending on headphones, so I can't say if that is a weak point in every game Samson SR850 - open back, oversized on-ears, $30, very nice roundness to the soundstage for a nice and crisp 360, depth I felt not as good as top headphones, but hard to tell because those are so uncomfortable for me I can't use them for long enough to test properly. The treble are very sharp, to the point where it can be painful in games with some rather metallic sounds (like firing with silencer on). Also the construction is microphonic. Koss KSC75 - open back, clip-on, on-ear, about $22, does 360 without issues, depth is not perfect, and the image of the enemy is not as crisp, but all in all they are decent, and you can track what happens around you well. My main issue would be some specific lower sounds might not be standing out much, so again using Warzone, the chests are harder to hear. I have them now on a headband, and I feel like they worked better for me as clip-on - a bit sharper image and those few sounds like the chests were a bit more audible. The headband is down to $2 on AliExpress, so it is worth checking which way of wearing KSC75 would work better for you. Qigom S300 White Lotus - flathead earphone, $15-20, good 360, crispier image than KSC75, but even more low end audibility issue, and so the current chests in Warzone are genuinely hard to hear :P Out of those HD599SE and SHP9500 have detachable cable, while SR850 and particularly KSC75 can have cable failures. Bad headphones in the price range - Koss Porta Pro ($40 open back on-ears, worst headphones for competitive fps I've tried), Creative Aurvana Live SE ($30-50 closed back on-ears, can't do a proper 360, only cardinal directions), Superlux HD562 ($15 closed back on-ears, hardly any direction to the sound). Neither of those is as good as some older under $100 Sennheisers I've or used, but all of those prime recommendations were unfortunately discontinued. If you would be interested in getting used headphones, then look for open back HD558. Unfortunately I'm completely unaware of good closed backs in $100, sorry.
