Astro (Logitech) - A50 Series

If you are looking for a wireless 'gaming' headset, and are used to a more neutral tune, like your Sennys, you have to do some research on which headsets come close to that. Out of the box, most gaming headsets have a weird tune compared to what you're used to, including all Razers. Some more recent notable wireless gaming headsets that sound great from an 'audiophile' standpoint are the Audeze Maxwells, Astro A50X, and Hyper X Cloud 3 S Wireless. Those come out of the box with a great tune, close to the Harman curve. You can also get a lot of other headsets to sound great with some EQ. Something like the Fractal Scape or Nova Elite sound great with a modest EQ. GadgetryTech on YT offers awesome 'audiophile' EQs for a lot of headsets. Also, if you are using a modern gaming headset, make sure you have any corny 'surround sound' or spatial type features turned off. Since you've been using the same set for 16 years, you also have to give some time to adjust to the sound of a new headset. Even something slightly different might sound a bit weird at first if you aren't that experienced with different audio products overall. Many people still totally write off any wireless 'gaming' headsets, and imo that perspective is outdated in 2025. You can get really awesome, low latency audio quality with wireless headsets these days. Yes, for absolute dollar spent, you can get the best 'value' by sticking with a wired setup, but if you value the convenience or features from a wireless setup, you *can* get a great sounding setup if you're willing to do some research and drop the coin.

Wireless 'gaming' headsets don't use bluetooth. Also the Maxwells sound incredible from an audiophile standpoint. You should update your viewpoint with whats currently avalable.

I had the Astro A50x - which you can use them with your phone while gaming Second pair I have is the nova pro wireless - mostly use those on my ps5 they’re great too

I wanted to try The audeze bro, and well I’d say pick wisely only thing about the a50x it’s that they don’t have noise canceling but are really comfortable

I had a long story with headsets and i would recommend something like beyerdynamic + a lavalier mic (can be wireless with ai functions like filter background noise etc) like Neceff. Other than that my best headset was the Astro A50. 

I am new to PS switch from XB and I brought over ny Astro A50s to PS, didn't like the performance on PS so I bought Steelseries Arctic Wireless Pro and Pulse Elites. I would return the pulse elites but scracthed them changing out cushions. The Steelseries I really like even better than what the A50s were for me on XB.

I recently bought the A50 gen 5 expecting to be the same as my Astro A40 but wireless and I was so disappointed. First, the A40s are open back, and the 50s are closed (semi open) so you’ll immediately hear a different sound overall. Very closed in comparison. Second, the A50s have no way of wiring em, so you’ll only be able to use Dolby atmos which in my opinion is garbage compared to the Dolby sound that’s integrated in the mix amp. I returned the A50s and had to go deep into the rabbit hole of audiophiles to really understand what I wanted. I ended up buying the Hifiman edition XS for that open sound and the antlion usb 2 mic. I use the same mix amp pro with the same Dolby sound because I can’t stand the Dolby atmos. So my overall tip is don’t expect the a50s to sound like the a40s. At least buy an open back for a similar sound.

Have you tried Astro A50? I cant use that for long due to the high pressure on the top of my head. They are too heavy and have too poor padding. Even have a thicker set of pads from different third parties but it doesnt help. That is the one problem i want to solve by buying a new set. But unlikely to happen with this one according to reviews and you. Thanks

Hi, The A40 TR Headset, A30 Wireless Headset (can be used wired), and the A10 Headset are all available. However, if you are looking for the best audio from your console, the A50 X would be a great choice as it supports 24-bit audio quality. Is there a reason you prefer wired headsets?

I just picked up an Astro A50 Gen 5 and it's been amazing so far. It was a definitely controversial as people either love them or hate them. I was also looking at the Steelseries, but the Astros were on sale for <$230.

Please do not support Razer. They've recently put out an extremely misogynistic ad that makes women out to be annoying and surrounded by drama. A50 Gen 5 and A50X have a very good mic with a large frequency range. The Maxwell mic is awful.

First of all, thank you for posting here and for being willing to help and provide answers. My journey has unfortunately been quite challenging, and any support you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I used the Nova Pro Wireless for two full years. I disliked the microphone but loved the battery system (similar to what I have with my Shark vacuum and Ring doorbell, haha), as well as the transparency mode(used to have it on like almost maxed out), since I need to be aware of my surroundings-taking care of mom. I also appreciated the ability to connect via both Bluetooth and the dongle simultaneously. Then, I bought a used Maxwell because it was very affordable and used it for about nine months. However, the microphone was almost as poor as the Nova's, and it didn’t support simultaneous Bluetooth connections. Half a year ago, I purchased the A50 Gen 5, but I still miss the Nova Pro Wireless because of its excellent battery system, transparency mode, and the ability to mix Bluetooth and dongle connections at the same time. Currently, I’ve returned to using the Maxwell due to the capability to have the earcup's microphones to act as a transparency mode with sidetone functionality on a very sensitive level (currently on 80%) I even tried the SteelSeries Gamebuds, which also feature transparency mode and sidetone, but unfortunately, I had a disappointing experience with them as they feel unbaked I would be super grateful if you could do a side-by-side transparency-mode test of the new Elite headset versus the Maxwell on 70-80% sidetone to see which one is 'better' and louder. I find the Audeze Maxwell to be quite little too sensitive, but I like how loud it does it so it can get just as loud as watching a youtube vid in normal volume. A50 Gen 5s are great. If you want something more premium (or if he uses Xbox, Playstation, and PC), you could opt for the A50x

Having the best sound and being the most comfortable makes those two things you mentioned not issues for me, specially since I have the fourth Gen which don’t even have bluetooth. The new Bluetooth functionality is cool, but not something I would care about hence why I didn’t “upgrade “ to the new Gen.

Just get the A50 Gen 5 there is a A50X version but the gen 5 is the same

Hi, The A30 Wireless Headset and A50 GEN5 and X use LIGHTSPEED wireless technology. I'll be honest, you'll need to be very good to tell any difference between them and the A40 TR Headset as the latency really isn't that high even on wireless. I used to have my A40 TR Headset as my daily driver but have since switched over to the A50 X for my Xbox and my PC and it matches up perfect to everything on my display from gaming to YouTube, etc. For battery life, the A50 X and GEN5 offer 24 hours which I think it perfect for a single session and you can dock it in between to top it up. You can also use it with a charging cable to play and charge at the same time. Obviously it's all down to preference, but wireless headsets have come a long way.

I use wireless for work since I like walking around, however the Scapes Mic is a lot better than the Maxwell's. Of course the Astro has the best mic out of the three, at least for a wireless headset. I personally use a Rode NT1A for my desktop microphone, so yeah.

Brother just save some money you and walk into a Best Buy and cop them brand new. They are worth it

Honestly I love mine got them used on mercari for 145 and totally worth it. Ive had the A50X,arctis nova pro,Razer kraken v4 pro these are by far the best headsets Ive owned. The battery is so insane to charge last about 3 or 4 days.

If you want to stay using wired, I would actually recommend the Steelseries nova pro wired. They have great sound stock but also great with wicked cushions. Prior to switching to the nova pro’s I was using a pair of a40tr’s with amp. If you want to jump to wireless you can’t go wrong with the a50’s I recently switch from the nova pro wired to a50x and love the sound and mic quality. For an out of the box suggestion, A good pair of IEM’s for when you don’t want the weight of a headset on your head. Personally I use the Simgot Supermix 4. If you’re on console these are great if you don’t need a mic otherwise you’ll need a USB MIC to go along with it.

I had the a30s for years until the usb dongle that connects to your console or pc stopped working. Was pondering whether I should buy the new USB or a new headset. I bought the a50s and am very happy with it. Only difference to them that I wasn't the hugest fan of were the a50s aren't noise canceling, the a30s are. But the a50s are so much more comfortable so im happy

Most headsets have a weakness or two, for the maxwells it’s the weight and fragility and for the Astros it’s the Bluetooth and the ear cup size and that they leak sound a bit. Overall the two are pretty well matched with Astros having a nod towards the comfort and Maxwells a nod towards overall sound quality. I’ve owned both and really liked both, but for different reasons!

They use planar magnetic drivers which give insane detail and bass. They have multiple custom eqs and a good mic. Used them for cyberpunk and it was epic haha. These days surround is done software side for the most part so headphones don’t really include 7.1 anymore. I bet I know the headphones your dads friend had I had them they are white and called turtle beach x41 I had them in like 2010 they were soooo cool for their time. The closest you would get to that would be some gen 4 or earlier Astro a50 or something with an optical input so it can decode 7.1. But if you play on console you’d need a monitor or tv with optical output and 7.1 passthrough. The newer consoles have surround on them right out the controller so they got rid of the optical.

Astro A50s, they are wireless, sound amazing and the are very comfortable, but a little pricey, but 100% worth it. I have tried all the other headsets around the price range and Astros IMO are by far the best and there is really not a close second.

Yea I seen someone shared a image about that awhile back but wonder if they really changed anything. Yea I had the A50X and hated the smaller cup and feel and the Bluetooth setup was really dumb lol.

Checked pretty much everything there is on the internet, but most posts are too old now. What I need the most is it to be wireless and preferably have Game/Chat mix. I’m planning to use in only for my PC (for PS5 I have been using Astro A50 gen 4 for 5 years, they are still fine, but I want something new and better + I’m tired to take them from my PC to PS5 every time, so I need one dedicated headset only for my PC). So, out of all headsets here are my picks: - Logitech G Pro X 2 (not sure about the sound, tried them, Cloud 3s sounds better IMO) - Hyper X Cloud 3s (no game/chat mix and 3,5mm unfortunately) - Astor A50X (there is no A50 gen 5 in my country and + I don’t want to have 2 almost the same headsets LOL) - Razer BlackShark v3 pro (not a fan of Razer overall, but noise canceling sounds amazing) - Arctis Nova Pro Wireless (heard that it has connection and cracking sound, same as I have on Arctis 7 back in a day) I also had Audeze Maxwell and sold them, unbearably HEAVY, but sounded the best out of all BY FAR. If you have any other recommendations, please, feel free to share. For now I like Cloud 3s the most, probably. But lack of Game/Chat mix and 3,5 jack is what holds me back. I also have HD6xx and I love them, but I hate wires when playing.

Update guys I scored on a brand new set of open box A50Xs still have the plastic on everything for $270 and ordered some wicked cushions :)

Get the Astro A50 Gen 5. Easily the best gaming headset available right now. Amazing sound, with great bass (which is crucial for watching films), very comfortable, and the best headset microphone in the market right now.

HyperX Cloud 3 s wireless. They’re on sale on Amazon right not for like $120 I think. Astro A50x. People will shit on these but I always end up coming back. Feels pretty open, so not as immersive. Audeze Maxwell. if you like heavy things on your head. I don’t think the directional audio in my experience is as good with these than the other two. Nova Pro Elite. If you want to throw $600 at your problem and get sound a little worse than the Maxwells

i'm using astro a50 x's and there amazing

I’ve been using the Pulse Elites daily since they launched. No cracking or peeling. They disconnect maybe once or twice a month randomly. Not a big deal. I use them on PS5 and Bluetooth with my tv for night time movies/tv. While they are serving me well, I’m not that impressed with the audio quality. On PS4 I was using Astro A50’s and those sounded A LOT better.

They look sexy, but the microphone is the reason why I won’t pick them up and I will continue on the Astro A50X

I actually prefer my a50x nowadays. The docking station and HDMI switcher is easy to use with the added positive of it being multi platform, it's lighter and it still sounds good. Mic is a lot better sounding as well.

The a50x are definitely better at directional audio than the maxwell's. I don't really think the a50x lags behind that much behind in audio quality. The maxwell's are a better performer when it comes to music listening though. I bought the A50x on a whim while they were on sale and i wanted a wireless headset that were actually multi-platform (I have the Xbox version of the maxwell's) and I was honestly surprised about the audio quality, it's still very good, i don't even use my maxwell's anymore these days because im happy with my experience with the a50's. I have them connected to my TV with my ps5, lounge PC and additionally my switch are all connected through the base, and I can seamlessly switch between the sources, so it was perfect for my needs.

Interesting. I’ve had a good experience. Sound quality is great. Mic quality is great. I like the instant switching between devices. All the profiles you can make for different use cases is great. They’re also extremely comfortable on my head and ears. Yes the Bluetooth is spotty sometimes but it isn’t a dealbreaker for me. I guess I’m not the target market for that? The only time I really use it is for calls while I game and that’s been fine. But I game on my desk and it’s not far from phone so it isn’t too much of an issue. I also have a pair of AirPods if I want to listen to music anywhere other than my desk.

To the average casual gamer $600 is a steep price. But if gaming is your main hobby that you do every single day for hours on end and if you game on all three systems then yes, $600 is worth it. This is an endgame headset that will last you multiple console generations. Headsets like Artis Nova Elites and the Astro A50x aren’t meant for everyone. They are for gaming enthusiast who want the best equipment possible.

Headsets I've owned or do currently own: Arctis Nova Pro Wireless JBL Quantum One (NOT WIRELESS) Logitech Astro A50 Wireless Arctis Nova Pro - Definitely the most comfortable as long as you aren't moving around anywhere. If you tilt your head forward at all they flip off. They flipped off into my sink as I was washing dishes and no longer work now. Sound on them was okay - honestly not as punchy bass wise as I was hopping. I would honestly rate them 3rd in overall sound quality while using the Steelseries audio app. 7.1 sound was there and worked pretty well - nothing that will blow you away. Battery life was great with the two swappable batteries. JBL Quantum One Wired Headset - Probably the least comfortable of the 3 even though it's the lightest one. Cushions on ears and hard top band on your head def not great. Sound quality was great - better than Nova Pro's. When using paired with Dolby Atmos it had great punchy bass but the sound isolation between instruments in music could get a little muddled and finer details become hard to pick out. Still I would rank these second in sound quality and last in comfort. Obviously no battery stuff to worry about. Logitech Astro A50's - just got these babies in and I would give them the win here. Extremely comfortable. Some people say they are a little tight on their head, but I wear small baseball caps and so I'm not a good judge here. I've heard some people just put them on a basketball and that stretches them out enough for larger heads. Sound quality is best of the three. The bass might not get quite as loud and punchy as the JBL's, but it gets pretty close while still keeping excellent isolation between different instruments. I use Dolby Atmos here and it's helpful but these headphones sound just as good without it out the box. Battery life is great. Range is great. Setup is easy peasy. Flip-up to mute mic is a cool bonus. I tested all of these with a mix of jam band / rap / classical / and EDM styles of music and that is my conclusion. As for gaming I'd probably rank them 1. A50 2. Arctis Nova 3. Quantum ONE. As for music I'd rank them 1. A50 2. Quantum ONE 3. Arctis Nova Pro. And for movies I would rank them 1. A50 2. Arctis Nova Pro 3. Quantum ONE. Hopefully that's helpful to at least one person after testing almost $1000 worth of headphone tech.

The HD6XX requires a decent amplifier, it’s also not intended for or great at positional accuracy (footstep tracking). It’s great at many things but definitely not even in my top 10 if competitive gaming is my use case. I’d recommend you try the Audeze Maxwell, Astro A50 or the Arctis Nova Pro if competitive gaming is the priority.
