I use it for my workout. Its great, it has also greatly improved over new versions for tracking the meters better. I would never consider switching, most likely will get a new one in a year or 2. I also use it in open sea training.

I just switched from an Apple Watch (3.5 years) to a 255. I run and was mostly using my aw as a running watch. As a running watch it was fine, but the battery life sucked and my gps/distance was always a bit off from my friends. I'd much rather a slightly better gps than a slightly better hr sensor. Also, big, physical buttons are also great when doing things when you are sweaty. I didn't even bother getting a touch screen. From my perspective, I couldn't find a good reason to buy another apple.

The only consumer health tracker on the planet that is reasonably accurate enough to even think about maybe, maybe, maybe, deigning it as something which could monitor abnormal cardiovascular medical conditions, is the Apple Watch. Maybe. Even that's a stretch. Most trackers are very clear about how their features are only validated for otherwise healthy individuals. And the Whoop's EKG, as one example, barely even works for healthy individuals, let alone unhealthy ones.

Bevel (and Athlytic) are mostly pretty pseudoscience. The issue the Apple Watch has is that third party apps do not get access to low level AW sensor data; they only get high level summaries of the data, so they get "average heart rate over the last minute" instead of each intra-beat timing. This, combined with how the AW only takes sensor readings every five minutes, severely & negatively impacts the accuracy of Whoop-like statistics on that platform.

I've been using the Ultra 3 for about a week now, mainly for running (1-2 hours a day, roughly 10h/week, 120km/week) plus strength training or yoga for about an hour daily. I'm very routine-driven: I work from home, never travel much, always home by 6PM, runs in the morning, workouts in the afternoon. So my habits are pretty consistent. # 🔧 Settings * Always-On Display: **ON** * Cellular: **ON** (outdoors only) * Low Power Mode: **OFF** * Background Refresh: **ON** (disabled a few irrelevant apps) * Wake on Wrist Raise: **OFF** * Wake on Crown Rotation: **OFF** * Always On: **ON** # ⚡ Charging & Battery I keep it between 20-80% charge, and it tops up super fast - basically full again after my post-run shower. On average, I'm getting about **1.5 days per charge**. I typically charge it every other day: once in the evening and then again after my morning run two days later. It's nowhere near Garmin-level battery life, but I honestly don't mind the shorter cycle. A single 1-2h run eats up about **7%**, regardless of whether cellular is on or off. I don't play music from the watch since I usually have my work phone on me and stream to my Shokz from there anyway. # ❤️ Heart Rate Accuracy This is where the Ultra still lags behind Garmin. * For walking, strength, or yoga - it's great, very close to chest HRM accuracy. * For running - not so much. I get frequent dropouts and it often locks to cadence (hello, 180 bpm "steady state"). I've tried all the usual fixes - moving it higher up my wrist, tightening/loosening, different bands - no real improvement. I have a pretty bony wrist, so that might be part of the issue. My Garmin's optical sensor wasn't perfect either, but at least it didn't constantly confuse cadence for HR. I've switched to a chest strap again for running sessions. # 📊 Metrics & Health Data Coming from Garmin, this is the weakest point. Apple's HRV, stress, and recovery data are nowhere near as consistent or detailed. HR and HRV aren't continuously measured, so you lose that nice rolling insight Garmin gives you. That said, after three years with Garmin I've learned my own recovery cues pretty well - so I'm less reliant on the watch's "readiness" metrics now. There are third-party apps that try to replicate Garmin's body battery / training load data, but without continuous measurement, it's just not the same. # 🍏 Ecosystem & Everyday Use This is where the Ultra wins easily. * The UI is smooth and snappy. * Being able to respond to messages and notifications without my phone is huge. * Integration with the rest of Apple's ecosystem (Mac, iPhone, AirPods) is seamless. If you're already deep into Apple's world, the watch feels like an extension of your digital life. # 🆚 Apple Watch Ultra 3 vs Garmin Garmin is still **the better athlete's watch**, no question - especially for long-distance runners or anyone training for ultras. Battery life, GPS tracking, and data depth are all superior. This is why I will still keep my garmin - for any 50k+ mountain runs. I am just not this kind of guy who would turn all the settings off, making the watch essentially pointless (I like looking up metrics during run a lot). But if you're like me - training \~20 hours a week (which is still only about 18% of my waking time) - the other 82% of your life is where the Apple Watch shines. For everything outside pure training, the Ultra 3 is just **a better all-around smartwatch**.

Compared to my Fenix I remember being very self-conscious at first with how dainty the ultra felt and looked. I honestly didn't know if I liked it. Like OP I immediately noticed how light it was too. That didn't last long and it felt completely normal in a matter of days to a week

The sapphire will absolutely do it. Mixed reviews on scratched bezels, but the staggering consensus is the screen will hold perfectly. I've had each gen of AWU since their respective release days (I keep selling my old one and getting the new model for 1/2 off that way), but in 3 years of daily use I've never scratched the sapphire.

I received the AWU3 and I remain in doubt. For running it is very inferior. Runna is okay but it's an additional subscription. I expect from the AWU a better silent morning alarm and perhaps help to better organize my days with Structured for example.

I switched from Apple Watch & Apple Music to Garmin 255 & Spotify. You can get a yearly Spotify premium gift card from Amazon for $120 to save money, otherwise it's $144 a year from Spotify. I much prefer Garmins watch for running over the Apple Watch. The 2 music subscriptions were about equal to me. They both have their annoyances & pluses.

Right? It's actually amazing to have all this tech in a tiny device strapped to your wrist. Lots of people only dwell on things that aren't there. But the things that are there? Pretty cool: You can call your mom with it or have it tell you which way to turn so you don't get lost. It will call 911 for you if are moving and get stopped fast enough that your brain noped out. It will warn you if have afib or sleep apnea. It's a jukebox. You can play a game on it while waiting in line. It will tell you when to turn off the quinoa pot. It nags you if you've sat on your ass too long. Mine nags me if I start to get dehydrated. Because it has its own friggin App Store. Oh yeah . . . you don't have to drag a big slab of iPhone everywhere you go. And it will do all this 24/7 for some years. It's really hard to break. Plus all the athletic/health data you actually need as a layman. For $800. This is by far the best device Apple has built yet for my personal use case. My phone might sit on the counter in the same place for a day or two. But my Ultra is all over the place.

Personally, i had Apple Watch only since the very beginning. That's 10 years of being stuck on one platform. Same watch faces. Slow to roll out features. But the biggest for me was: sleep tracking sucked ass on my Apple Watch and the calorie burn was just laughable. The calorie burn on a totally lazy day on my AW put me in the "moderate exercise" category. It was just silly. My wife got a garmin last spring and i got jealous. It had a lot more features that i considered health centric that i liked. The calorie burn made sense. The metrics it gave were just plain cool to look at. It integrated well with the loseit app. The watch face store is just amazing. Makes my garmin feel new all the time. Everything i wanted out of the Apple Watch needed an app and usually a subscription to do. Sleep tracking? Have fun with the pillow app. Subscribe to premium to unlock basic features even the garmin has for free! Calorie tracking beyond some rings? Download bevel. Subscription though! Hydration tracking? Water minder app. Like there's apps to do stuff, but i just find the functionality on the base garmin experience to be preferable. I just like it. It's nice.

I can't stand my Apple Watch. It always turns off during my workouts and counting "exercise minutes" is literally pointless. I bought an Ultra 2 because I wanted to have the best shot at success with it and that thing is a POS for health tracking. The whoop is so much more comfortable and consistent at tracking with better data analytics. I have the 5.0 and the band is fine. Idk what everyone is complaining about. Is it something you would wear to dress up an expensive outfit? No, but that's not really what it is intended for. Personally, I would wear it with a suit without thinking twice because I don't really care what other people think.

Apple Watch Ultra user and haven't used Garmin or others. I like the AWU because the GPS is extremely accurate, I like the out of box workout/fitness App with Apple, and most importantly I have SOS emergency call if I'm swimming solo. I wear both an Apple Watch and a Garmin. But honestly, if I had to choose one, it would just be the Garmin. For health data and hell even just telling time the Garmin is miles ahead of Apple. I took the same path, to take advantage of the connected functions of the Apple Watch and a better silent morning alarm. I miss Garmin's running features, including routable dynamic mapping (WOD makes up for it a bit) and Garmin Coach. Runna is less good (much less adaptive) but it gets the job done. For everyday functions, I am happy with my new AWU3 even if I still have the reflex to blindly look for my button to turn on the LED lamp :)

I have both. Often, it appears the readings are for different people. Oura has me awake when I am asleep and asleep when I am awake. My sleep metrics seem more accurate with Oura aside from deep sleep which can be 14 minutes on Oura and an hour on Apple. My HRV has always been very low, even though I seem to be very fit and healthy. Oura's average is 29 and Apple 20. Apple is far more efficient at determining lowest RHR at night.

Yeah, I always had better luck with the sleep tracking on the Garmin after switching from Apple Watch. My Apple Watch sleep tracking was so basic and I felt the duration times were so off. And I'm hearing from the new videos on Apple and their sleep scores say that it factors in less things like it doesn't counter HRV while you're asleep it goes off consistency, duration, and that's it. I set my Garmin to sync to Apple health and I got a sleep score and it was so wildly far off. It was insane lol one day I only got 3 1/2 hours of sleep and I got a 95 sleep score on Apple lol the Garmin was correct in telling me I got shit sleep. Definitely happy with my decision to stick to Garmin.

It's more of a fitness tracker than anything. Apple themselves (in the apps they have) makes sure to reiterate that whatever data they show to you is not a replacement to a health check up nor an accurate indicator of your overall health. It's not a gimmick, as the data they record hold real weight and I've read stories here that some of the things they saw in their watches prompted them to go to a doctor, indirectly saving their lives. Personally I use an Apple Watch to gamify my workouts. I am an avid gamer and a bit of a gym rat. Some people use it to gamify their walk, run, swimming and hiking activities. Even sleep can be gamified, or menstrual cycles. You'd know how many hours you actually slept with a watch on. It is a fun device for those trying to stay fit and live a healthy lifestyle. For some people, maybe they just want a digital watch they can customize. A watch they can put their dog's face on. But for health and making sure you don't die? Nothing still beats a visit to the doctor.

I love Apple and Garmin products, and I've been waiting for the Ultra 3 release to replace my Apple Watch Series 9. Here's where my AWS9 falls short for me: camping and hiking because of battery, maps and navigation while biking and hiking, and the dynamic running workout suggestions that Garmin has. I can get Fenix 8 Solar for $880 through a discount with my health insurance which makes it comparable to AWU3. Things I like about Fenix 8 Solar: maps, battery, daily suggested workout, Garmin coach, MIP screen doesn't look like a mini phone on my wrist. Things I like about AWU3: being reachable by my wife and kids while running and cycling, running errands sans phone, love the design, my watch bands will fit, my Apple Music subscription works, etc. I feel like the AWU3 fits my actual day to day better than the Fenix; although, when I do make it out for that couple times a year backpacking trip, Fenix is the clear winner. But on the day to day I mostly am tracking running and weightlifting. And a weekend gravel bike ride. Anybody have both?

I have an apple watch and I used it in the start, but I've purchased a bike computer after a while, and It's 100 times better. If you just use it for commuting, I would say it's fine to just stick to an apple watch. If you use the bike for training, it's pretty annoying to have to check you wrist to see your heart rate in an all out intervall. If you don't really care about the stats mid ride an apple watch is the way to go. Since it's probably not that nice to slap a bike computer to your wrist.
