Love my 935. Bright and hard to get feedback on it

The e8xx are the budget range, you can't expect too much from them. There is a reason they are cheap. A better comparison would be the e9xx mics. I much prefer my e935s to the SM58.

e835 is great, but A/B with the e935 and it's like taking a blanket off the PA.

x2, in recording bands in a live-ish setting every week (all members in the same room but in a treated studio), 935 is superior in capturing quality vocals. Not to say you won't get there with a 58, but it'll get you closer right off the bat.

Absolutely hate the 835. The 935 and 945 can be pretty great on the right voice though

The Sennheiser E935 is a great pick, very clear and handles harsh vocals well. Another solid option in your range is the Audio-Technica AT2020 if you're open to a condenser. If you want to stay dynamic, the E935 or even the Audix i5 are both better than the XM8500 for detailed metal vocals.

+1 Came here to say Senn e935. Baseline lead vocal for me for ages now. EV makes some good stuff that's better than the 58 as well.

This is a polarizing conversation! I can work with them all, don't mind the 835, typically choose sm58 for general use. I find that the more specialized the mic is (especially super or hyper cardioid) the more it favours a certain voice type and handling technique becomes much more important. I used to be really really picky about the vocal mic but after feeling like I was going around in circles for a long time I went back to more general vocal mic models, instead relying a bit more on compression and dynamic EQ. I work with one singer who sounds absolutely incredible on a 935 but he sounds really really good on almost anything. However it's generally not my go-to vocal mic.

I love my 935's, they're my favorite vocal mics. I also prefer 835's to SM-58's. SM-58's sound muddy to me.

I think you're alone dude: ) They seriously crank! I think the e835 beat SM58 for clarity hands down, and the e935/45 are easily superior to the beta 58a. The midrange complaint you refer to is less problematic in Sennys than Shures, IMHO. ☺️

Not that an 835 is perfect or anything, but I think a lot of people either expect to drop a different mic onto a channel they've prepped for a 58 or whatever and expect it to sound good, or they try to compensate for the bright top end by boosting the low end which gives you this boomy-yet-shrill sound with lots of sibilance and plosives. The only time I have issues with the top end on an 835 or 935 is when the PA is tuned to be overly bright in the first place.

My favorite is Shure Beta 57A. Others I recommend are Sennheiser e945 and e935.

I think they all have a place, Sennheiser 935 is their best live capsule that would suit a majority of voices, 945 is good but a lot brighter so you gotta take the HF boost down with that one plus it has a limited working angle so if your slightly off it dissapears , Used to love the Shure Beta 87a but then I found the AKG C535 and wayyy prefer that over it for live main vocal duties. A 58 will always be a solid option so always have a few, I have had three SE V7 capsules go dull on me and the paint comes off them so easily despite looking pretty and so as great as they are for the price the inconsistency lets it down. Telefunken M80 is similar to 945 but behaves better on rejection and has a slightly wider axis response but yet it has some plosives close up, it's very workable and higher quality paint grades over the V7 colors. AKG D5 is good but sounds a little veiled but again can work on some people, Earthworks Sr117 is my new go to for live condensers for band work where clarity and flat tonality is necessary and you can really carve the sound to this mic. I'm trying to keep it to myself as a secret but for the money it's bloody awesome. Beyerdynamic M88, M69 or Soundstar Mk 2 (M400) are insanely good if you can find them for good money

I bought the Sm7b and cloudlifter hype and was underwhelmed at first, but I think it sounds pretty good on guitar and bass cabs. If I could do it over, I would get an re20, but instead I added a sennheiser e935 as a vocal dynamic mic and it fills in the gaps nicely.

I've grown used to them and personally quite like them. Did a dinky country festival recently using a bunch of house supplied gear and decided on e945s for vocals and honestly I had a great time. I've been using e935s for high school musicals for two years or so on a variety of sources, saxes, some percussion, other woodwinds and occasionally brass if we ran out of 57s. At that dinky country festival we had an engineer come in for the headliners (which was a whole thing I'd rather not get into right now) but when it was revealed that there were no SM58s in the house mic locker you could see his marbles slowly rolling away from him. e935s, e945s, a couple V7s I had brought and some other bits and bobs simply weren't good enough for him. I can understand being surprised to see not a single SM58 (as I was) on site but the treatment myself and the house crew recieved was pretty rough to say the least.

SE v7, Audix OM5, Sennheiser E935, AKG D7, there's so many great dynamics out there for a similar cheap price, and depending on your vocalist, one or the other will be a more ideal fit. They will stand a touring environment just like a 58 will, while giving better rejection, or simply better sound in general. The Audix i5 is also a pick over a 57 for me in some cases, sharper transient response and a bit more bite, does well on snare for some stuff.

If you're considering an sm58, the sennheiser e935 is under 150 and I've had much better results for vocals and drums than with the 58.

I LOVE their condensers (865, 965), but I share your disdain for the 835. 845 is more usable, 935 and 945 are usable, but I don't love them.

e835 is just cheap junk.... e845 is a little better but still not great, both are a fraction of the price of a 58, which is why you see them, they're cheaper than a 58 and sound better than most other options at the same price point. e900 series are the ones that are supposed to sound decent and I'd rate them above a 58 However, the best value dynamic currently available (IMO) is the SE v7... Its the same price as a 58 but sounds better than an e945 (IMO)

Just a piece of advice regarding mics. Try to remember that each mic has a slightly different equivalent eq curve, and if you can find a mic that enhances your vocal in the right frequencies it can help a lot. I have about 30 different handheld dynamic mics in my inventory at the moment, and when anyone asks for a mic recommendation I invite them round to my studio, and record them singing into batches of 4 mics at a time. We then listen back and see which mic is most flattering to them without EQ. Polar patterns are also important when stage noise is an issue, and I usually suggest avoiding cardioid mics unless the singer is very powerful, or has to move a lot relative to the mic. Some of the winners that usually come out of the shootout are the Audix OM series, Sennheiser 935/945 (935 is my personal fav for mid priced dynamics, but that is based on my voice), Shure SM57 Beta, and an old EV ND357. I personally hate SM58s, and whenever someone goes "but you can bang a nail in with it and it still works", I ask why they don't use a hammer for nails, and a 935 for singing like a sensible person.

The e935 is a criminally underrated mic for live work. Both the e935 and Beta 58A are typically the first two mics I reach for with live vocalists, but Heil's PR35 still gets a lot of use as well as Telefunken's M80 (does not suit all baritones/basses Tbf)

I only have e935 and rode NT1 signature, so cannot comment on e835 but there are comparisons on YouTube. In terms of quality, both sound pristine you can 100% get professional results with either option. I lived in a noisy apartment with no room treatment at the time so e935 was somewhat easier to work with. NT1 would always record outside noise from the street and even tiniest noises from my room equipment and furniture. You can remove them, but it is additional inconvenience you have to deal with. I didn't know much about SE V7 then. I would have gotten that one if I did more research. I think it becomes the industry standard for live shows, dethroning sm58, as I see more people use it live. I am sure it will sound more than good enough for home recordings too and it is significantly cheaper. I would get that one now and SM7B later if I feel I needed an upgrade. Also, I would advise to get a decent windscreen. I really like metal screens like Stedman Proscreen but it is not a necessity, they just work better.

You are not. They are mostly rubbish. 935/45 is getting more towards sounding good, but the capsules dull so ridiculously quickly from spit, etc, that I feel it makes them a silly choice. There's plenty of much better options out there. For me personally, I love the Audio Technica AE6100. Also had some good results with DPA stuff. Know loads of people who like their SE V7's (although I've not really used them in anger as anymore than a shout mic). If you are after LOADS of gain before feedback, Audix OM7's are pretty good. The point is that there are choices. Sennheiser made themselves very popular in the market years ago by giving their mics away to any engineer who would try them.

Unless you're really certain that you need a super- or hypercardioid for monitor placement or other gain-before-feedback reasons, then I'd recommend sticking with a cardioid because that pattern is a lot more forgiving whenever it comes time to sway from side to side or peek at the fretboard. While the Beta 58a, M88, M80, and MD431 will all have a touch more \*sparkle sparkle\* than an SM58 when you're right on top of them, move your mouth an inch to either side and all of a sudden they've got a blanket over them. The AKG, being a condenser, seems like more trouble than it would be worth unless you're planning on switching to in-ear monitoring. While not fancy, the Sennheiser e935 might be worth a try if you just want a bit more clarity than the SM58.

I have lots of vocal mic options in my kit...most of the time I'll just throw all SM/Beta58 or SEv3/7 or E935/945 (yes, have all these options and more) across the stage for everyone. If we're talking one off show, there's not really time usually to dial in specific mic choices for each individual vocalist, it's usually more chosen for the type of music, stage/venue, and skill level I'm working with (an SEv7 in front of an inexperienced person is a pain compared to a an SM58 with it's wider pickup pattern for instance). If we're talking an artist that I would be frequently working with, there's usually time to try out a few options over the course of several shows and get a preference for them specifically. Only exception to this would be if it becomes very obvious very quickly that they'd sound best on something else, knowing what each mic typically brings to the sound.

im a trainee with live sound, so probably take this with a lot of salt im not a fan of the sounds of 58, my work had some 835s so i tried them and the other tech told me no ages ago, i ended up putting one up the other week and had a bunch of feedback issues, thats when i discovered why we dont use it unless we need to on the other hand, the 935s we have are amazing and sound a lot better imo, but our 58s are pretty beat up and probably need new shields and absolutely look like the anarchist club they came from (possibly too identifiying)
