I started with the ode. It was the best electric grinder for the money. I want focused on espresso and wanted the electric. Shortly after I purchased the KMax for travel. In love it. It is essentially the K Ultra. I highly recommend it but am 100% glad that I first purchased ode. If you want flexibility now...get the K Ultra. It is quite nice to use.
r/pourover • Fellow Ode Gen 2 or a hand grinder? ->On my bar currently is a Fellow Ode, Baratza Vario, and a Timemore 064s. Had SSP cast in the 064 but probably swapping them to the Ode now. All that to say, I could have just one of any of these and be perfectly happy. Timemore is probably my favorite as far as quality and workflow, plus it can genuinely pull double duty. Ode is great but obviously you're not getting espresso there. Vario is an old design with clunky workflow but the burrs are great-in fact, the Mahlkonig X54 is essentially just an updated Vario. All these are great grinders.
r/pourover • Best filter focused grinder for $500ish ->Used ode gen 1 through fellow website. Got mine for $150. Like new. Love it.
r/AeroPress • Any electric grinder below 15O USD other than Baratza Encore? Not for espresso, only AeroPress. No, I am not looking for hand grinder. ->I just sold a moccamaster grinder to buy the ode for noise. I'm super impressed. https://www.reddit.com/r/pourover/s/zjKOzmTeJJ The Moccamaster would wake the neighbors. The Ode doesn't at all.
r/pourover • Best grinder for mocchamaster? ->I have a fellow ode gen 1 and it works great for me. I know they did a lot of updates on the gen 2 and seems to be a pretty popular grinder for pour over and the moccamaster. Edit: here is a link to the gen 2, but you can find gen ones for much cheaper. https://fellowproducts.com/products/ode-brew-grinder-gen-2?utm_source=google&utm_medium=paid_search&utm_campaign=trademark_keywords_ode-trademark-search&utm_source_platform=google_ads&utm_content=branded_copy&utm_term=fellow%20ode&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=14888767084&gbraid=0AAAAADi8OEvHvwbc8jOQFb8diNnfDdOde&gclid=Cj0KCQjws4fEBhD-ARIsACC3d28vsjOAFZ3yG9qla1K9D0p2Aauj57GgPSxECfWGJ02TIrGomLHtMfoaAuRSEALw_wcB
r/Moccamaster • Anyone have a recommended electric grinder? ->Baratza grinders don't die. Parts and instructions are available to inexpensively rebuild them. I had a Virtuoso for 15 years, and rebuilt it twice in that time. The plastic drive gear can get stripped, and once I replaced the motor and burr set with upgraded versions. I bought a Fellow Ode bc the Fellow is quieter and passed the baratza on to my son who has had it for 3 years. I like the Ode, but don't love that I can't repair it myself. I had some trouble and Fellows solution was to send me a rebuilt unit.
r/JamesHoffmann • Grinder Recomendations ->If you get the Ode Gen 1, make sure you RDT. The Ode Gen 1 is notorious for static.

r/pourover • Best filter focused grinder for $500ish ->Find an ode gen 1 for cheap and install the timemore turbo burrs in it! https://www.reddit.com/r/pourover/comments/1kaak2n/fellow_ode_timemore_turbo_burrs_incredible/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
r/pourover • Tired of grinding by hand. Selling electric grinder suggestions ->And because you mention that you're looking for a better grinder to help you explore more coffees, I think that's *exactly* what the Ode is geared toward. The downside is that it is considerably more expensive than the hand grinders (at least, in USD).
r/pourover • Perspective Appreciated on Grinder Decision Paralysis ->First - encore and virtuoso have the same motor (I'm 90% sure) so noise won't be better. What do you mean by "fussy"? the ode is quieter and faster - I think the speed is really the thing that you'll appreciate. I hear (ha) the Eureka Silenzio is very quiet. Lots of good grinders out there, take a look at r/pourover if you want more ideas
r/Coffee • [MOD] The Daily Question Thread ->In my experience the encore needs way more cleaning than the ode lol. Not sure what you mean by "suitable for an office", though. They're both good grinders. Don't stress yourself financially - the ode is nice and I really like the coffee it produced but it is not literally twice as good as the encore.
r/Coffee • [MOD] The Daily Question Thread ->I've owned the Baratza Encore, Fellow Ode and now the 078. They clearly to me are bottom, mid and top in that order. The 078 is wildly good.
r/pourover • View on Reddit →I have two Odes--a gen 1 w/gen v2 burrs and gen 2 with SSP MPs. I wouldn't recommend the SSPs. The newer Fellow brew burrs are easier to dial in IMO. I have just replaced my SSP MPs with SSP Lab Sweets. They're better than the MPs for filter brew. But, I can't really say if they're worth the price for the upgrade. Obviously, this is a subjective opinion, so YMMV.
r/pourover • View on Reddit →Ode Gen 1 and moccamaster has been the best coffee setup I've ever had - you don't need gen 2 burrs - I grind only half the of the possibility of the grinder and it's delicious. Good looking grinder, small and quiet. Highly recommended
r/JamesHoffmann • View on Reddit →I have the Fellow Ode grinder, been using it since its release after backing it on kickstarter. Before that I had (and still have) a Hario manual grinder.
r/CostcoCanada • View on Reddit →I found a very noticeable improvement in my brews ever time I upgraded grinders. I went from pre-ground, to a Kingrinder P2, then to a Fellow Ode. I personally have been loving my Fellow Ode, and I use it every morning with my Chemex. The P2 is also pretty great for the price, but I got sick of hand grinding, especially when I use 30-40g a morning.
r/Coffee • View on Reddit →I genuinely found the V1 burrs to occasionally be unable to grind fine enough for an ideal pourover brew of very light roasted coffees. That's what made me switch. Additionally, I have found the V2 burrs to grind a little cleaner with fewer "fines". It was a noticeable improvement but not a huge one.
r/JamesHoffmann • View on Reddit →Ode 100%. Have and love it. I also have a DF64 gen2 for 'spro... and it's a whole different (lower quality) vibe...
r/pourover • View on Reddit →Thank you for your reply. I agree, outside of maybe an EG-1, its looking like its going to be two separate grinders for us. Will probably focus on an espresso grinder since the Ode 1 makes great cups but is more of a grievance on the UX side of things. The search continuous!
r/pourover • View on Reddit →Ok if you have the Cuisinart grinder, basically anything is an upgrade. Which is good! * The Oxo burr grinder is an entirely ok starter grinder. * The Fellow Ode is excellent. * The Baratza Encore is very well regarded.
r/pourover • View on Reddit →I wouldn't recommend a ZP6 like some here for Costco coffee. You don't want a high clarity grinder for mediocre coffee. And I don't think a K-Ultra is worth it because you can get 95% there with a Kingrinder K6 for $99. So the k6 would be my choice. If it has to be electric I'd probably get a used fellow ode or new DF54
r/pourover • View on Reddit →One thing that's not as discussed about the 078 is it's build quality, esp. compared to the Fellow Ode. It's miles better and feels far more sturdy. Only issue really is the popcorning in the hopper but that's not too bad if you take some extra care during feeding
r/pourover • View on Reddit →Just adding my experience for anyone Googling this. My Fellow Ode worked great for about 1.5 years, and then the motor crapped out I was surprised there was no way to get it repaired, and Fellow's CS was really difficult to work with. Combined with my Stagg kettle heating element dying after 2 years, I just can't recommend Fellow for anything right now.
r/JamesHoffmann • View on Reddit →Since you already have one of THE best flat-burr grinders on the market in the Pietro, I'd definitely go Femobook A4Z. With that combo, you'll have 2 of the best grinders available on the market - 1 flat burr and 1 conical burr - which have been praised highly here. Those 2 grinders are actually on my radar to eventually buy both. Just not sure exactly when, as it's tough to justify the expense since I already have 3 good grinders (Ode, X-Pro, J-Ultra). Discount code OCS5% for $20 off the A4Z (from YouTube channel Our Coffee Shelter). For anyone reading this who's in the market for a Pietro, those are also on sale at espressoparts.com currently.
r/pourover • View on Reddit →Df64 gen 2 or ode 1/2 with the right burrs can be a very capable choice...same can be said for an 064 or any other decent 64 platform. For hand grinders it has to be zp6 or pietro I would imagine. Pietro would be out of the budget range but either could be found used also.
r/pourover • View on Reddit →If you get the Ode Gen 1, make sure you RDT. The Ode Gen 1 is notorious for static.
r/pourover • View on Reddit →You don't need the ESP version of the Encore if you're just brewing filter coffee. The regular version will do fine. Since you're doing batch brew frequently, I wouldn't get a hand grinder unless you just enjoy it. I make a pot of drip coffee on workdays for my wife and I, and I do pourover and spro on the weekends, and occasionally I will use a hand grinder, but to grind 75g of beans, I have to reload 3x. I like it, but if you're like most people and time is your most valuable commodity, you're going to want an electric grinder. I use an Ode Gen 1 that I bought on sale a couple of years ago for $159. That would be a great option if you can find one. The Gen 2 also goes on sale from time to time. The 64mm burrs munch through 75g of beans like nothing. Takes about 10-15 seconds. These are very common on the used market, so maybe you could look around on Facebook marketplace, etc, for one that someone is selling. A DF54 would also be a great option at around $230. FemobooK A2, as someone suggested above, makes great rechargeable option at $99, and will rival or beat the grinders I mentioned above in cup quality. However, you would have to reload it a few times for large batch brews. And it's not very fast. That's not as much of an issue, though, since it's electric. It will also grind a LOT of coffee (like, enough for 80 pourovers) in between charges. I think it's an outstanding value. Just depends if you're willing to live with the fact that it would take a bit longer to grind for batch brew.
r/pourover • View on Reddit →If electric is a must then Fellow Ode Gen 1 (then change burrs later) or Gen 2 on sale, if hand grinding is an option you have many more options
r/pourover • View on Reddit →+1 for ode Other notable options imo: Mhw3Bomber f74 Commandante c40 mk4 Wilfa uniform Barratza encore esp Varia VS3 Kinggrinder k6 (Rented all of those for a while before ending with an ode)
r/pourover • View on Reddit →I have 3, soon to be 4. 99% of the time I'm using either my fellow ode (gen 1 with gen 2 burr replacement) or my df64. I use the ode for everything other than espresso. I use my Df64 exclusively for espresso. I also have a cheapo no name Amazon hand grinder from when I was first getting into specialty coffee around 10 years ago, I use that for camping and travel with my aeropress or pourover. I want to get a k6 soon for better on the go grinding. I'm also a lowish volume roaster and have access to some very nice commercial grinders at work, so a lot of my coffee at home for non-espresso I just pregrind at work and it doesn't make a huge difference in flavor/brewing *** I also play guitar and I only have 5 guitars maybe I'm doing something wrong...
r/espresso • View on Reddit →Fair enough. I think coffee subreddits usually have some sort of saying about spending X amount more for your grinder, maybe its like 50-100% more. Someone in this thread will be more helpful - I'm quite happy with my Fellow Ode (was like £150-200) but it only grinds fine enough for filter (and people seem to complain quite a bit about the Fellow Opus which does Espresso).
r/espresso • View on Reddit →Second the Ode. You can get better quality from a similarly-price hand grinder certainly, but the convenience factor cannot be understated if you are doing larger batch V60s. I have an Ode (only Gen 1), an 1zpresso and a Lagom Casa, and the Ode is still my go-to for pourovers.
r/JamesHoffmann • View on Reddit →In my experience the encore needs way more cleaning than the ode lol. Not sure what you mean by "suitable for an office", though. They're both good grinders. Don't stress yourself financially - the ode is nice and I really like the coffee it produced but it is not literally twice as good as the encore.
r/Coffee • View on Reddit →i think a big bunch of people in this sub are just looking for a good deal. i'm the same as you, my shoulder is not so great, i have a Fellow Ode and i've never looked back. i hate manual grinding. just do you.
r/pourover • View on Reddit →No it's very solid. It's also flat burrs and the encore and opus are conical.
r/pourover • View on Reddit →You probably won't find timer or remotely operated grinders. However, the noise a grinder makes is actually a point of product differentiation. It might be that there is a grinder that's quiet enough for you to be able to use with only minimal discomfort. Eg Baratza grinders are excellent value for money, but they're generally *loud AF*. I switched to a Fellow Ode, and it's _much_ quieter. As a guideline: seek grinders with more metal and less plastic. I'm not sure why, but that's the pattern.
r/Coffee • View on Reddit →These. Or check out the Fellow Opus and Fellow Ode Also OP, most modern hand grinder these days, you can already grind for less than 30secs and you already have a dose of 15-20g. So it has become less tiring. And its portable too. With your budget you can get one on an endgame model that will last you years and has better grinding than those brands mentioned above
r/Coffee • View on Reddit →The Ode is hot garbage, get the Sculptor kids.
r/pourover • View on Reddit →Depends on the type of coffee you like. If you are looking for a way to achieve higher clarity and your are only doing filter coffee then the Ode is a beautiful machine. If you want to make espresso then the Ode is a no go. If you are mainly looking for convenience and aren't super picky about your coffee and finding all the individual flavors then the Ode is probably an unnecessary expenditure. I personally have an Ode Gen 1 with Gen 2 burs, and I have not regretted it for 1 second. It helps me make incredible pour over coffee day in and day out. I got the Gen 1 on deep discount though and then eventually upgraded the burrs, so I spent much less than a new Gen 2 would cost.
r/pourover • View on Reddit →The slightly larger hopper on the Ode is kind of an underrated quality of life feature. Its the perfect size for doing a 60g batch brew, the catch cup is also appropriately sized to catch all of it. I have the 078S as my espresso grinder and it is def a single serve focused design. You'll be grinding 15g 4 times because you also want to cover the hopper while grinding or else the popcorning can be annoying. Also the catch cup I don't think would hold 60g so you'll be using a different one or also be doing that part in sections. Taste is king but these little things matter too!
r/pourover • View on Reddit →Get the best grinder you can afford. There's no substitute for freshness in coffee grounds, no matter what the bag says! I have an Etzinger etz-i, but if you're unwilling to spend £200 on a hand grinder, there are plenty of other choices! James Hoffmann did a review on the [KinGrinder P1](https://youtu.be/EPbVUR6Y83k?si=LdQ82LSeqs3EpFdm), which only costs £30ish. It's reviewed well, it might be a good starting point if you're on a budget. Stepping up, you could look at other offerings from KinGrinder, Timemore or 1Zpresso, they're the big names for budget grinders. Check the reviews, but it's my understanding that you can't go too badly wrong with their offerings. If you want to go electric, look at a Sage, Baratza Encore or Sette, Fellow Ode or Opus, or Wilfa Svart for good starting points, they can all be had second hand for not a lot, but I do see the odd Fellows going for £150 or so new. There are bargains to be had here and there! I kind of gloss over electric grinders not because they're no good, but because the money you spend is put to better use if the manufacturer doesn't need to pay for electric motors. Grinding as coarsely as a moka pot needs isn't too onerous, and the money just goes into making a decent grinder. Electric grinders start at well over £100 for anything worth looking at, so unless you're grinding for 4 espressos every morning, you'll get much more bang for your buck grinding by hand. I do make 4 espressos every morning though, for which I have a DF54. Worth a look for an espresso-capable grinder you can grow into, and you want a nice kitchen gadget. (Who doesn't?) Another wise investment is a jeweller's scale, or drug scale, depending on your upbringing. It doesn't need to be anything expensive or fancy, as long as it measures to 0.1g. Use it to measure out your beans before grinding them, and weigh the water into the base, so if you find a recipe you like, you can repeat it. A standard kitchen scale is no good for the coffee world if it only measures to the nearest gram. If you're weighing out 500g of flour, you'll end up between 499.5g and 500.5g. Pretty negligible in a loaf of bread. When you're working with 20g of coffee, you'll taste the difference between a 19.5g and 20.5g cup. Amazon is the place to look, they're a tenner well spent. Finally, when you make the leap, hand or electric, get yourself a burr grinder. If it costs three eighths of bugger all and has a little spinning blade at the bottom, don't waste your money on it. Blade grinders are near-universally regarded as crap by the coffee world because the "grounds" they produce are so horrendously inconsistent. You want a nice uniform(-ish) particle size, which blade grinders just aren't capable of by their design. You'll have coffee particles ranging in size from half a bean to icing sugar in the same batch. Unusable for making anything you'd want to drink. Also, avoid grinders with ceramic burrs like the Hario Skerton. They aren't as awful as blade grinders, but they don't produce good grounds either. Ceramic burrs are the very cheapest you can get, which shows how much thought and effort went into the rest of the grinder, and the quality of coffee it'll produce. You get what you pay for.
r/mokapot • View on Reddit →I have the Ode V1 and have used it more than once a day ever since getting it (which was early after the Kickstarter (but not through the Kickstarter). It would be an excellent choice. I upgraded to the Gen 2 burrs, but if they are basically only going to do batch brews through the Moccamaster, you wouldn't need to bother with that.
r/JamesHoffmann • View on Reddit →Baratza Virtuoso Plus would be in that range and is good. For some more the Fellow Ode or Ode 2 is good but it's above $250 new. Fellow also has the Opus at like $200 which I've read is good but I'm not certain how good. From my experience the Baratza grinders kind of dominate that price point but there definitely could be others to consider.
r/pourover • View on Reddit →Some people use the DF54 for both 'spro and brew but I'm not sure in reality how it compares to the Ode Gen 2. Certainly if you only ever want to have one grinder that may be worth considering; $200 or so retail. I own the Ode Gen 1 with Gen 2 burrs and I'm still very satisfied with it (after 4 years or whatever it's been since the kickstarter). I tried the SSP brew burrs for about 6 months but went back to Ode's Gen 2 burrs. It's quite consistent without too much peakiness; I find it does well with most all of the single origin light roast coffee I drink.
r/JamesHoffmann • View on Reddit →Sprinkle or spray? I have a gen 1 w/ gen 2 burrs, so no anti-static, but i have absolutely zero retention (<0.05g) and zero mess after I started spraying my beans and giving them a quick shake. For reference, I give 1-2 sprays for 10g, 15g 4-5, 30g 5-6. I've disassembled to verify no grinds retained. The first week I had the grinder, my wife was pissed b/c of the piles of grinds building up around the base.
r/JamesHoffmann • View on Reddit →Fellow Ode 2, DF54. Both ~275€ so might be worth considering. Baratza Encore ESP is ~ 130€, Fellow Opus is ~180€ both conical burr grinders though so if you have a different preference in that regard maybe skip those. Ode gen 1 is available at ~ 150€, has worse stock burrs than g2. Also worth considering but not very esthetically pleasing: hand grinder + cordless drill. For example K6 ~ 100€.
