Get what ever is the cheapest mini series drone you can find. Depends on the time or you local second hand market, this can be mini 1, mini 2, 2SE, or mini 4K. At sub $300, you always get a full size controller, and long range FPV stream and fully gimbaled camera, perfect for practicing your skills. I would say the early version camera isn't the best, and you will notice it. If you really want good video, spring for mini 3 I guess

When I boat my drone in (DJI mini 2) I usually carry it in my ocoee watershed between my legs with the padded dry bag liner in it. The sensors do get weird when flying low over whitewater (<25' or so) but once you're up a little bit it just navigates of gps. Flying low I usually just stay stationary to get a shot at a certain angle. Just take the drone out of whatever dry storage you have it in at the end of the day and it'll be fine. No need for silica. Go ahead and take the TRUST cert and print and carry your card with you to ward off anyone that doesn't like your drone.

With more sensors to avoid collisions means it doesn't have to as durable as the mini 2. I would expect crash's to be less but they may suffer more damage. A good time to have DJI care

I intend to keep my Mini 2(non-SE) which I've had for 3yrs now even though I now have a Mavic 3 which is superior in every way by a long shot. The reason- My niche is urban/architectural photography, both with a handheld as well as drones. With most of the ideal places to fly in the city, discretion is key. I can put the Mini in the air and land it without drawing much attention, and it's the perfect size and weight for foot travel. The 12mp camera is sufficient for urban landscapes/skylines given proper composure and editing . The only real downfall would be the lack of collision avoidance , but I dont rely on that anyway. Another reason- Online prints aside, I've printed and framed 6 aerial skyline drone shots that are currently hanging in my home office, as well as another handful I sold to my wife's company's corporate office. All happen to be from the Mini 2, so...

I live in saskatchewan, the M4P will give you a cold warning after some time flying in our cold winters. Hardly is there a good day in the winter to go fly due to the wind, weather etc. It is a great drone, I love it, but I hardly ever get a chance to go fly around these days with work and poor weather. Hope that changes in the summer time. I have however flown a mini 2 in -43⁰C for about 20 minutes and it faired very well, no warnings, just icing on the props. I think the sensors and extra wires in the M4P don't take the cold very well. Before flying in the winter: keep your batteries in a warm spot, not too warm, maybe body temperature. This will allow the batteries to last longer. When your done flying, put the drone into the bag, the bag will slowly bring the drone back up to room temperature, and won't cause moisture to build up behind the lense due to heating up too quick

DJI makes throwaway drones too. It's called the Tello. Having flown Holy Stone, Tello and then Mini 2, Air 2, Avata 2, etc, it's like going from riding a bicycle to a CBR1000RR. Sure, they both have wheels and move you from one point to another, but the similarities fade soon after.

I use a DJI Mini 2 for those purposes (our own rural property in Ontario, though for us its forest and woodlot not fields) These sub 250g drones aren't suitable for pro-level mapping, but with the right tradeoffs can be great. Pros - Sub 250g means in Canada you don't need licensing - DJI API means they can be used with many flight planning apps (I use DroneLink). Through Mini 2 with iOS, but I believe through Mini 4 with Android (DJI stopped updating the iOS API at some point) Cons - Lower image quality / gpd than more expensive and larger models. Blur becomes an issue at higher altitude and low light due to nature of the shutter and the fairly small sensor size, but still can be decent - Less wind resistance - No RTK (etc) means georef is highly imperfect. A problem for some use cases, but not if you can manually fix things against a good georeferenced orthophoto or can use your own GCPs (basically you rubbersheet it in postprocessing) Bottom line - not at all suitable for a drone mapping professional who wants to be sure they do a job once and it's good. But quite fine for someone on their own land, who can say "too windy / too rainy, I'll try tomorrow", doesn't mind a bit more post-processing. And if something goes wrong and the qualify is off, curses mildly and tries again the next day.

The m4p is considerably larger than the mini 2 series drones, so the mini 2 would be about half the size of the m5p https://preview.redd.it/ou2qv1boyxof1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fd152ab6e065fe9e44a55465c3139441d9819ae1

I'm aware of the impending ban and agree with what you've said. I volunteer with Civil Air Patrol, so we're stuck using 3-5 year old Skydio S2 for the most part. Complete junk, but they're on the Blue UAS list. I personally have a DJI Mini 2, Mini 3, and Mini 4 Pro that I use to practice making orthomosaics and sometimes fly for Spexi.

Like others, I believe Skydio as a company had a lot to do with this drone ban. As a US company, they sought favor from their own government just like DJI seeks favor from the CCP. I believe in a free market and I don't necessarily agree with these business practices and methods but I'm not going to shit all over their products and make up ridiculous stuff because of it. DJI still cannot come out with a beacon; DJI OA can't even come close to a Skydio for years ago. If someone can't wrangle in or tame the Skydio, that's on them. Maybe they should try the X10. I'd say the same for those who had a poor experience with a DJI drone and they try to trash it claiming the drone just flew away to China and never looked back. That's what this sounds like, sour grapes. Many of us have flown the 2+, you're not going to get a superior cinematic feature film from Iceland but can \*any\* DJI drone do this: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1dbuVqDoVc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1dbuVqDoVc) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6tEV04dTZY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6tEV04dTZY)

Damn, Im impressed with what they seem to be able to pack in at these weights. Last mini series drone I had was the original, though Ive flown a 2 a few times. Both felt kind of like flimsy toys, despite the decent capabilities they had. These are physically larger and pack more actual hardware in, dont really get how its possible.

Get the Mini 2 (used) or a Mini 4k. These drones are identical. You won't need obstacles detection or the enhanced transmission range on the beach/sea. This generation is inexpensive and easy to replace. If you feel like you want more you can always upgrade to a Mini 5 Pro next year. Don't get the Mini 2 SE.

If you're not wanting to do any FPV flying then the NEO isn't the better option. If you want a drone that will give you good picture and video like the MINI 3 pro the closer to that is the DJI mini 4k. It has a 4k camera and just lacks the obstacle avoidance. It isn't going to be as good as the Mini 4 pro but that's a different budget range. I have the mini 2 we was my first and I loved it so much I bought the MP4 about 6 months later. I then wanted to have a tel zoom so went up to the upper side of my budget with the Air 3 S. I didn't need it to honestly the MP4 does what I want. There's advantages to the Air 3 s but a person could get but with just the MP4. I would snag the best DJI I could get. That's on shelf somewhere or as mentioned adorns if bigger purchase. I think you'd be happy with the mini 4k. I was happy with mini 2 we which is only 2.7k max res but wanted some obstacle avoidance even though I rarely use it.

I was torn between the two but chose the mini 4 pro and I just shoot real estate and vacations. I was using a mini 2 and had zero issues shooting real estate, it looked absolutely fine. Are you filming cinematic moves? If not then only opinion the mini 4 pro will be plenty. People talk about the wind, if you watch videos of the mini 4 it does a damn good job in the wind. Also are you desperately needing to shoot in a super windy situation anyway? If you're traveling to other countries, the sub 250g is probably your best bet. I got a refurbished fly more combo mini 4 pro for $800 with the RC2 screen remote from DJI.

Similar feedback. I got into rc planes. I started with a simple $75 trainer. You can spend quite a bit of money on a drone, find out it's not your thing and it sits in a closet most of the time. Maybe fine a mini2 or mini2 se on eBay. Spend a lot more when you know how to use it and will continue to do so.

You're lying. Totally user error and typical want to blame the drone. Look, I don't like the DJI ban either but I'm not going to make up stupid shit about a "runaway" drone to justify it. I have a 2+ and it has never come close to running away and it probably seems like it buzzing people because you didn't know how to use it. DJI drones are the ones that flyaway with DJI having so many flyways they were forced to create a category for it under Care Refresh. Don't get it twisted.

Agreed. Another point to consider with your first drone is how much are you comfortable risking losing. I do aerial cinematography and I use the mini 2 the most (unless client wants log gamma.) I'm way less stressed getting crazy shots. I've crashed it at least 10 times, once down about 5 flights of metal stairs in a lighthouse. It's fine. Indoors, outdoors- super easy to fly and great images (oh, except in low light.) Not as exciting as fpv, but flying fpv is a whole different animal, and I wouldn't recommend anything but a sim to someone interested in fpv with no pilot experience.

I've done real estate last 3 years. Started off with Mini 2 and upgraded to Mini 3 (smashed my Mini 2 one too many times 🤣) You don't need the biggest or most expensive or feature heavy drone for this kind of work. That being said, the Mini 3 is the best value and the bare minimum for this kind of work, it is significantly improved from Mini 2 - just make sure you get it with a smart remote.
