Moccamaster (Technivorm) - KB Series

Tbh I feel like the showerhead on the mocca is fine. It does drill a hole, but the default brewer is so constricted it’s practically an infusion brewer. I think by the time most of the water has been brewed, the grounds are 95% extracted, and whether or not the bed is flat is the difference between 95 and 96% extracted. People are just overly concerned about conical beds. But it’s not a v60, in the end.

They are no longer special, but used to be. About 15 ish years ago, the only game in town was Bonavita BV1800 or Moccamaster. I went with the Bonavita, and with almost zero maintenance it lasted me a ten years or so. I would keep it going but they intentionally made it hard to repair and find parts for. I could have picked another machine from the bunch that is available now, and probably been happy, but went with the MM KBGV instead. It is a known quantity at this point, and I have some semblance of what to expect in the machine's future. The brews are consistent everyday, the design and quality has been proven for 60 years, I don't have to think too much. It gets the job done. If you got it on sale on Amazon, those prices are in line with what other brands cost. Yes, the plastic basket feels cheap. And I hate that glass carafe with a passion. (I've posted lists of what I hate about it here before.) There was an article describing this phenomenon that I'm trying to find but can't. The summary was that products that have continued to be around for a really long time will continue to be around for a really long time. (Bathtub curve). Anyway, yeah. it's nothing special now, but it's consistent. You can brew every day knowing what to expect.

I’m currently using the Moccamaster + Baratza Virtuoso, but used the much cheaper, but comparably excellent Bonavita 8 cup coffee maker for 10+ years with zero maintenance.  If I wasnt a fool and instead descaled it every 100 or so uses, it would still be going strong.  It was a superb option but I see it has climbed up in price now. Just get the moccamaster on sale. 

Fellow as a company scares me. Way too many failures across the board. I want to try one but my MM just keeps on going

Yeah I bought us one about a year ago. Got a great deal so I'm happy with it. But if I paid full price I would feel let down on the quality/sturdyness of the whole thing.

This is the only answer! I was addicted to Starbucks mostly out of habit but I couldn’t stop because the coffee made at home did not taste good for me UNTIL I got a moccamaster. I’ve saved literally thousands of dollars. It’s buy it for life because if you end up needing to replace a part, the company sells individual parts you can purchase.

I thought i understood this brewer to do well with beans on the darker side. But i too was underwhelmed with the moccamaster kgbt. The definitely semi-automatic for me. The grind needs to be fine enough to allow the bed to be saturated evenly but drain timely. Schrödinger’s lidded quantum brewer basket. Is the bed even or fully wet? Dont look. Just cover & enjoy.

KGBT - same experience (outside of the plate/carafe) a couple years ago but i keep it around hoping one day something. There was one YT review where a couple did a blind comparison of brewers - MM did not do well - and they were surprised and went back to do a second MM brew again and all the sudden it was tops. Thats suspicious and perhaps could be a dial in issue … for all the other brewers that didn’t perform as well too. I think it all comes down to profile tastes and expectations. I really like the breville precision but also wouldnt mind trying an aiden, ratio or xbloom.

I have the mochamaster. I personally think it's overhyped

No complaints on quality of the brew on the 2nd one vs brewing a whole pot at once but I agree it might depend on the timing between brews. For us, it's about an hour, 6:30-6:35 and then again at 7:40-8:30 (leaves the heating element on so it stays warm if they want more). If there's more time between 1st and 2nd you might get a noticeable effect on quality

I also have a KBG select and extremely rarely brew more than 250 ml at a time. Tbh, it’s a really solid cup. Just slightly adjust the grind size.

I dont know which my moccamaster is, but I know that it does shut off in 60 minutes, physically flips the off switch so I have a smart plug routine that simply does it at 59 minutes when I brew a full pot (like on the weekend) that overrides the auto shut off so I never have to physically flip the switch

A Moccamaster has remained in an elite tier of coffee machines for a long time for a reason; it makes really good coffee...though if I were OP and deadset on buying one, I'd get one with an insulated carafe, rather than one with a glass carafe on a hot plate. But best non espresso coffee bar none is a bold claim. With admittedly more work, doing a pour over (or sometimes french press, depending on what sort of beans I had and what I was trying to get from them), I could pretty consistently get coffee that was better than what a Moccamaster could do, and although I have plenty of experience and might be a bit better than average, I don't think I'm particularly excellent at pour overs (I do think my french press technique is better than most, but that's a whole different conversation...). Now, however, I've got a Fellow Aiden and have had to grudgingly concede that the machine can make coffee just as well--if not better in many instances--than I could. But I've only had the Aiden for \~6 months, so we'll see if its longevity can match a Moccamaster; it's certainly more fiddly and thus with more potential failure points than a Moccamaster.

Super basic, well built, repairable and makes damn good coffee. It really is the perfect drip coffee maker.

Meh, it makes a good cup of coffee, is well built and has the ability to be repaired by you. But you can get just as good a cup of coffee for less than half the price. It's 100% a splurge luxury item.

I have mine on a smart plug. I wake up at 630 have it turn on to brew at certain amount, turn off and then tuen on again when my spouse wakes up. No fancy settings on the coffee maker, but it just works, perfectly.

A lot. I was genuinely pissed off that I waited as long as I did to have a really good cup of coffee. Still to this day, the only thing that I regret is not buying the moccamaster sooner. 

I do wish they’d get rid of most of the plastic but at this point in my life, and after all the microwaved shit my parents fed me as a kid, the MM is the least of my concerns.

I’ve been through a lot of coffee makers in my time. I think I have every type of manual ones, including an off brand espresso machine. My moccamaster is my go to for a cup of coffee and I use it at least once a day. I’ve talked about it so highly that several co-workers went and bought one.

We're at 19 years on our MM Clubline. We needed to replace the slide mechanism this year on the drip basket, and MM had the parts, online, priced cheaply with free shipping. Other than that, all original. Use RO/filtered water and these things never die.

They are pretty retro looking devices but after 40 years of buying every coffee making widget since Mr. Coffee showed up this is the end of the line for me. Technivorm to the rescue!

I bought one of these a while back and although I love it, parts are nearly impossible to get if you don’t want to send your machine away to Technivorm. Messaged the American arm, the og Netherlands arm, multiple dealers and they all sent me in circles for weeks until I finally heard back. The one thing absolutely every email response had in common (from branches and dealers alike) was that they said internal parts cannot be sold to the public (minus some basic stuff on their site) for any reason to protect their brand. I was super disappointed so went to third party’s to buy online and my parts orders would get cancelled and they would send me a follow up email stating the same thing (cannot sell parts to public). It can only be sent off for repair which isn’t entirely bad, but I really, really didn’t like the whole experience. At the end of the day, I just needed two new silicone gaskets, a new thermal cutoff switch and a glass tube for inside and decided to make mine out of a piece of copper and bought a similar cutoff switch from Amazon which was rated for something similar. The silicone parts aren’t replaced right now so the shower head falls off now and then which I don’t like. The build quality is solid, and it brews at the perfect temperature for great-tasting coffee every time. Definitely worth it if you want something reliable and long-lasting!

I'd personally stick to the Mocca...like people said, it's sturdy and can be easily repaired (and has stood the test of time). Also, I wouldn't worry too much about it if you get a cheaper one or find a good deal...all 3 of those are decent.

You select the beans, grinder, grind size, quantity of beans, water quality. Moccamaster simply heats the water to optimal temp. Don’t expect stellar results unless you do your part.

Curious as to why? (Moccamaster user and it really matches the hype)

Mocca Master to the top. We have had one for 10 years and another for about 5 or 6 years. They are stone simple and reliable machines that never make a bad cup of coffee.

Get a moccamaster. So worth it. They go on sale every now and then, maybe black Friday will do it

So if you’re okay with a V60 / Chemex (the lack of automation, extra effort and time needed) then don’t get a Moccamaster tbh, it’s not worth it. Don’t get me wrong, I love mine a lot, but I was thinking about this the other day and that’s my conclusion. If you’re in the market for -specifically- a filter coffee machine, then a moccamaster is a great option

Happy to help! Again, I have heard that the newer models do not suffer from the same issues (I have a very early Ratio 6 from 2021) and I can say that the coffee is VERY good, so I wouldn't fault you for going with the Ratio. I will also concede that their customer service has been very good in the past when I've needed it, but their response this time around really soured me on the whole thing. I am just at a point in my life where I really value longevity, repairability, and build quality over many other things, which is why I am not looking at the Aiden despite it tickling the part of my brain that loves fiddling with settings and software. Conversely, we have a MoccaMaster KBT at the bar/cafe where I work here in PDX and it's been absolutely bomb-proof brewing a full batch of coffee every few hours from 5am to 9pm with daily cleaning/monthly descaling. It has never given any of us a single problem. So, that's probably what I'll end up getting myself if and when the Ratio finally craps out.

**Moccamaster KBGV**, certain colors dip regularly under $250, even under $200 (maybe wait for Black Friday?) Plus a good **grinder.** Baratza Encore is good. Baratza Forte (with steel burr) if you want to splurge. Baratza isn't the most durable thing in market, but IMO is best for BIFL because they have decades of history providing spare parts readily available, cheaply priced, and user replaceable. The Encore, for instance, has a plastic burr holder that is cheap and easy to replace, and designed to break first if a stone goes in the grinder, before more expensive parts are damaged.

I have one, it’s good, it’s simple, but stay on top of descaling or build your water if you live someplace with hard water out of the tap. I have hard water out of the tap. Always use an under the sink filter for brew water but have had a few times where admittedly I didn’t descale often enough and the mokkamaster wont work. Takes me a little work cleaning it to get it back to functioning. So not necessarily a knock on it but don’t neglect it and it’ll work for you.

You're not supposed to use citric acid with Moccamaster. It can leave a bad taste. A long [blogpost](https://www.tarkkamarkka.com/blogi/2022/08/29/moccamaster-kahvinkeitin-puhdistaminen/) in Finnish. From the blogpost: "Dutch sales office stated that they are aware that Moccamaster coffee makers are still being sold in some countries with this incorrect recommendation regarding the use of citric acid in the user manual." Tl;dr Don't use citric acid with Moccamasters

Went on vacation and started a pot of coffee. Came back into the kitchen 10 minutes later and it was still brewing. I forgot how slow regular drip coffee makers are. Moccamaster has spoiled me.

Coming from a Ratio 6 owner who has used the OXO: Get the MoccaMaster. The Aiden is an incredibly cool piece of tech, but reviews suggest it isn't ready for prime time due to the software being buggy and unreliable.

Seems like a great set up! I mostly use my espresso machine day to day for my americanos, but pull out the moccamaster when company is over. It makes a great cup of coffee! Other brew methods like a couple V60's, mokapot, french press are also fun and can be had pretty inexpensively if you ever want to try other things.

I grind the beans fresh every morning. We get two bags of Jim's brand, sweet love flavor, delivered every couple of weeks and it works perfectly to a pot a day.

This…only this and stop reading anything else. Just buy it.

The Aiden is good lol - your feelings are very nitpicky. If you want something more tactile and old school you can't beat the mocca
