Breville - Precision Brewer Thermal Carafe

If you're in the US, go find a local TJ Maxx or Marshall's. They typically have Breville Precision Brewers for on sale for $179. I actually got one for $89 recently. Any of those on your list will be perfectly fine though. I like the OXO stuff for the money, but if you can wait on a moccamaster sale you'd be in good shape. It's not my favorite brewer at MSRP (I much prefer the Breville precision, the Ratio 6, and the Fellow Aiden-all of which I've owned), but if you can get it around $200 it's great.

I have the breville precision brewer, my mom has the grind control (the one with the built in grinder). Both are great, mine is only a few years old but he's has been brewing daily for like 15 years

I did say that most gold cup machines must use a pump to get the consistency of temperature and flow. I own the breville after cross shopping the mocamaster and decided my wife would enjoy the iced coffee pre-set and I like the idea of the descaling reminder.

There's a new model of the BPB coming out. Also, I had one and sold it. The carafe lid is a poor design for cleaning. And it's only available as a part by buying the whole carafe again.

I've had the Breville for 3.5 years, and have no idea if the company stands behind it. It just makes coffee every day, gets cleaned occasionally, and keeps making more great coffee. The lid of the carafe can be a little annoying and get stuck in the depressed position sometimes, which is easy to correct, but that's the only complaint I have.

Had the breville precision brewer for 5.5 years. Recently it wasn't brewing as hot as it used to. Was just annoyingly lukewarm. Upgraded to the moccamaster and very happy so far. Love that it has a 5 year warranty.

I had one for about a year and determined it was my brew size. It's way easier to get a great tasting batch when your making 500+ ml than 1 or 2 cups (which was my normal use case). I ended up getting rid of it and getting an Aiden and I'm much much happier. Even brewing a single cup I can get a great tasting one basically every time.

If you're using a good machine and grinder there's really no quality difference whatsoever once you're dialed in. Drip and pour over are conceptually the same thing, it's just a matter of if you wanna do it yourself or not. I make pour overs for smaller weekend or evening cups, batch/drip for mornings before work to save time and brew larger cups. Using a Fellow Aiden currently, which has been great but also have the Breville Precision (also great) and have had the Ratio 6 and Moccamaster previously.

Just as a data point, I don't like my Breville Precision Brewer at all. Huge disappointment, and far too many shortcomings for the price point imo. It replaced my Wilfa Tim Wendelboe brewer (1st gen) - I would have bought that again had it still been available in the U.S.

I would say a Moccamaster is perfect if you're not a coffee snob because it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of other high end drip machines. The thing doesn't even have an alarm function to start making your coffee in the morning... because it doesn't have a clock. This also makes them practically indestructible. I'm getting frustrated with my current drip machine (a Breville YouBrew with the worst Carafe in history), and I'm considering upgrading because I don't need the bells and whistles.

Just bought the moccamaster a few weeks ago. Very happy with it. Love that it has a 5 year warranty. It was about $560 CAD after tax. Expensive but I read about people having it for 20+ years. Got it after my 5 year old Breville precision brewer no longer had a consistent temperature.

I have the Breville and to be honest, with I went with the Moccomastrt with an insulated carafe. The design of Brevilles is a pain to clean and often has a fusty old coffee taste if you if you don't submerge the lid in cleaning liquid. From a fine calibration setting point of view, yes it was all fun when I first got it but for the last 5 years or so I've only ever used the gold setting. I am a fairly high user though, probably used everyday except when we go on holiday. Min 1 litre a day, and most working days I brew 2 of them.

I wouldn't really consider it to be a one machine to rule them all type of machine because it is non-adjustable other than the amounts of coffee and water you use. But there is a machine that I would consider to be that, and an excellent machine all-around: The Breville Precision. Totally configurable, and is Hoffman's daily driver, in fact.

Lol, yeah, I suppose I was exaggerating a bit. Anyways, that's beside the point - I don't think it would be worth the money for OP to buy an Aiden if he has a poor quality grinder and isn't buying good beans. That was the main thing I was trying to say. I've owned an Oxo 8-cup, Breville Precision and my dad owns an Aiden so I've tried that now too and they are absolutely fantastic, although my favorite is still a pour over. None of those would be as good without good grinders, though.

I picked up a lightly used Breville Precision Brewer for ~100CAD, after using a chemex and V60 for 15 years. I tend to dial in the temp/flow rate/bloom time, which is a nice level of control. I'm not sure if I'm missing out on the profile control that I'd get from a Fellow Aiden. I think it's a great compromise (especially if you can pick up a used one for cheap), because I'll still break out my V60 or Hario Switch for the *good* stuff on weekends.

For you... Moccamaster or Breville Precision. I did a considerable amount of research with your same parameters, and came down to these two. The OXO was third place. I ended up getting g the Moccamaster fo my brother and son in law. They love the machines, and I've used them both during visits. The Breville may be more sophisticated and capable/programmable, but the Moccamaster does one thing very well. Dead simple, a design proven over decades (changed little since 1979) and was featured in New York's Museum of Modern Design. Parts are available and it is user serviceable. No electronics to go wrong as with the other two. Get a great grinder! I love a V60, Hario switch, Aeropress, Chemex and use them all. None of these can have coffee waiting for me when I walk into the kitchen...

Honestly, I've used a great number of filter brewers. I've never had any issues with the Sage (Breville) precision brewer, The Moccamaster, or the Wilfa Precision brewer. Each of those come within budget, and anyone would be thrilled to get em :) Nice gift and good luck!

I own all three machines, although my Breville Precision Brewer is the glass carafe model. Can't go wrong with any of them to be honest. Since you are a broke college student, you could narrow it down to the Cafe Specialty or Braun MultiServe Plus, depending upon whether you think he would appreciate a thermal carafe and WiFi connectivity on the Cafe Specialty. The Cafe Specialty also has more options for control over the brew, including control of the brewing water temp and the strength. But the Braun is really nice for the variety of batch size options, and you won't find a better machine for $130. FWIW, the Cafe Specialty is what gets used on workday mornings in my home, because I can start brewing in the morning from my phone while my wife and I are still in bed. Obviously, that still means putting water and coffee grounds in the machine the night before. But I prefer doing it that way vs brewing via automatic timer.

Breville/Sage precision brewer. Fits all of those needs. Get one with a thermal carafe.

I am on Reddit trying to find an alternative after our Precision Brewer was making worse and worse coffee and I finally realised it was the temperature. Even set at 98C, the water coming out has never went above 75C on my probe. Gutted as it is likely e-waste now.

I went with the Breville precision brewer. It is well made, and the insulated carafe keeps the coffee hot for hours. The Technivorm Mochamaster didn't make enough coffee for us.

It depends what you want: If you want to tweak and maybe hit maximal bean flavor expression w/ said tweability, probably a fellow aiden. If you want a no fuss tank that'll last forever - Moccamaster If you want a few basic features but nothing crazy that'll also be very durable - Sage/Breville brewer

To follow up to my previous comment, I very much like the timer feature for when in a a morning rush.

I had this exact same issue and I never see it referenced in positive reviews of the machine. I would use special cleaners for straws to get into the lid and it would come out dark brown no matter how hard I tried to clean it thoroughly.

Durable. I have averaged 3 brew cycles per day for 2 years with the Breville, and it is still going strong, although I have very soft water. I mostly use the Gold setting as well, and then occasionally tweak the grind size. The one flaw is the flat bottom brewing. The showerhead simply will not wet all the grounds evenly. For 1 up to 8 cups with the cone filter, it makes consistent excellent coffee. As to the carafe, I rinse the lid out in both directions with hot tap water after every brew, occasionally with some dish soap added if washing the carafe with that, and I have not had to disassemble it to clean yet.

Have had my breville precision for 6 years and counting. No issues so far.

If you can squeak out a few more dollars (or find it on sale) check out the Breville Lux Brewer. I have the Precision brewer for 5 years or so and its been outstanding and I would recommend except it does not have a removeable reservoir (I wish it did!). Looks like the Lux Brewer has the same functionality but has the removeable reservoir. I dont know if it can do single cups without using the carafe, but its completely capable of making single cup qtys because thats pretty much all I use it for. It has a bunch of other cool features like cold brew, pour over adapter, and things like that. Its programmable to whatever recipe you want but I almost always use the default gold setting. It makes great coffee provided you use good beans, grind, water quality, and so forth. There are cheaper ones, but this is the one that I would go for as it uses an insulated carafe instead of a warmer plate. The Breville Precision Brewer is amazing for customization, but the Moccamaster still wins for consistency. I really enjoy my Precision Brewer as well. The only downside is the drip lock not working and always dropping 1 droplet of coffee when I pull out the carafe. It vaporates quickly from the heatbed, but it's annoying having to clean it once a week. The coffee not being hot enough is a thermal carafe problem. It doesn't exist with the glass one, try buying that and turing on the keep warm in the brewer settings.

Ratio Six > Moccamaster KGBV > everything else We had one of those really fancy expensive Breville brewers, but it tasted like plastic even a year later.

That's exactly how I use my precision. I also swapped to it from a pour over setup for convenience. I'm really happy with it.

Honestly I'd go with the breville they are great

The Breville Precision is excellent and is a jack of all trades that can do coffee a.million different ways. It would be an excellent choice. BUT, and hear me out on this one - consider a Bunn speed brew elite. I know, not 3rd wave approved but it works just like the commercial machines. It keeps 70 oz of water at 200 deg at all times. The water you pour into the tank displaces hot water from the tank onto the coffee. It doesn't drip and sputter or even dribble like boiler machines. The water hits the coffee in a streaming swirl. So here's the thing. It extracts significantly more that a pour over. My guess is that it acts more like a percolator than a drip machine because the basket fills with water over the top of the coffee and it is swirling. Fills my thermos with 30 oz of coffee in 2.5 minutes. It's excellent. And it also comes in a thermal carafe version. I got it at Kohl's on sale with another coupon and with $20 Kohl's cash for $93.

Idk why nobody has mentioned this yet-a good grinder is more important than a good machine. Invest in something like a DF64 or Baratza Forte first. Flat burr grinders are generally recommended for drip coffee but there are some cheaper conical burr grinders that work just fine. For coffee machines, there are many good ones. The Breville Luxe and Precision models are easy to recommend. They are good consumer machines with many quality of life features like auto start in the morning.

Big fan of the Breville Precision Brewer, but the Fellow Aiden has decent reviews and has a little better look/design. If he doesn't have one, a nice grinder is also something to consider.
