I picked up a Breville Precision Brewer at TJMaxx for $179 & havent looked back. It makes a great cup, once you figure out your settings. I havent tried it, but I hear the cold brew function on it is a joke, though. Really good coffee beans make all the difference in the world too. If you are going to go through the trouble of finding a really good coffee maker, find a local roaster & brew good beans. Cheers!!

I sold my precision brewer after a while, partly because of it being difficult to clean properly. It had all these nooks in the basket and the thermal caraffe lid always contained leftover liquid which seemed unhygienic[](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&sca_esv=8c342fd051715880&q=how+to+pronounce+unhygienic&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAOMIfcRowy3w8sc9YSnjSWtOXmPU5eINKMrPK81LzkwsyczPExLjYglJLcoV4pPi4eIqzcuoTM9MzctMtmJRYkrN41nEKp2RX65Qkq9QANSVD9SWqoBQBAAn2r_lXwAAAA&pron_lang=en&pron_country=gb&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwixyter7IuNAxXLcvEDHdKYIH4Q3eEDegQIPhAO). I had a Cuisinart "Grind - N Brew" with the built in grinder for 10+ years. Thought i'd "Upgrade" to the Breville with its hopper of coffee beans and it automatically figuring out how much coffee to grind based on how many cups of coffee you were making in the pot. After about 2 years it started to leak, starting off once in a while, and then getting worse. And by leak, it's not just some water running out... its while the coffee is being made and since I use the timer i'd come downstairs in the morning to see a ton of coffee spilled all over the counts, down the drawers, and on the floor. The chute between the grinder and basket would also clog. I went back to a new Cuisinart like 3 years ago and it's been great.

I had this exact same issue and I never see it referenced in positive reviews of the machine. I would use special cleaners for straws to get into the lid and it would come out dark brown no matter how hard I tried to clean it thoroughly.

I wouldn't really consider it to be a one machine to rule them all type of machine because it is non-adjustable other than the amounts of coffee and water you use. But there is a machine that I would consider to be that, and an excellent machine all-around: The Breville Precision. Totally configurable, and is Hoffman's daily driver, in fact.

The Breville Precision is excellent and is a jack of all trades that can do coffee a.million different ways. It would be an excellent choice. BUT, and hear me out on this one - consider a Bunn speed brew elite. I know, not 3rd wave approved but it works just like the commercial machines. It keeps 70 oz of water at 200 deg at all times. The water you pour into the tank displaces hot water from the tank onto the coffee. It doesn't drip and sputter or even dribble like boiler machines. The water hits the coffee in a streaming swirl. So here's the thing. It extracts significantly more that a pour over. My guess is that it acts more like a percolator than a drip machine because the basket fills with water over the top of the coffee and it is swirling. Fills my thermos with 30 oz of coffee in 2.5 minutes. It's excellent. And it also comes in a thermal carafe version. I got it at Kohl's on sale with another coupon and with $20 Kohl's cash for $93.

Same. Bought it full price though but worth it. They're called Sage in Europe (I guess the website redirects though) and they also have a glass carafe one with heat plate but don't get that. The insulated one will keep your coffee warm for roughly a working day and heat plates burn your coffee.

They are really simple machines so getting one that is more expensive means it is probably full of features you don't need but that are points of failure. You really need to go high end on drip machines. Like, my programmable Sage (Breville outside of the EU) Precision Brewer is great but it's a 300€ machine. Even a Moccamaster is just a 300€ machine that has two buttons. On/off and half / full can. It's maybe a bit more stylish. It might have a more complex program, it might have higher quality materials. But none of that matters if you don't grind your coffee in the morning. You can throw some store bought pre ground garbage into the cheapest coffee maker you can find and it will taste the same. So just get the 30€ one and replace it every 2 years. Everything between 30 and 300€ is just the 30€ machine with a timer.

I guess that is not the main design criteria. They are primarily designed to be Batch brewers, not single serve brewers. I brew a 750ml batch every morning and the thermal carafe keeps it warm all morning. But as a single serve machine, the stainless carafe would cool the coffee pretty quickly, I would guess. I personally think you would get better V60 results by doing it manually, seems like a lot of faff, cleaning and compromise to use a machine IMHO. I don't have the Luxe, but have owned the Precision Brewer for over 4 years and love it. It sounds like you are looking for a single serve machine that can do batch brewing, rather than the other way around?

Idk why nobody has mentioned this yet-a good grinder is more important than a good machine. Invest in something like a DF64 or Baratza Forte first. Flat burr grinders are generally recommended for drip coffee but there are some cheaper conical burr grinders that work just fine. For coffee machines, there are many good ones. The Breville Luxe and Precision models are easy to recommend. They are good consumer machines with many quality of life features like auto start in the morning.

I did say that most gold cup machines must use a pump to get the consistency of temperature and flow. I own the breville after cross shopping the mocamaster and decided my wife would enjoy the iced coffee pre-set and I like the idea of the descaling reminder.

For you... Moccamaster or Breville Precision. I did a considerable amount of research with your same parameters, and came down to these two. The OXO was third place. I ended up getting g the Moccamaster fo my brother and son in law. They love the machines, and I've used them both during visits. The Breville may be more sophisticated and capable/programmable, but the Moccamaster does one thing very well. Dead simple, a design proven over decades (changed little since 1979) and was featured in New York's Museum of Modern Design. Parts are available and it is user serviceable. No electronics to go wrong as with the other two. Get a great grinder! I love a V60, Hario switch, Aeropress, Chemex and use them all. None of these can have coffee waiting for me when I walk into the kitchen...

A lit of brewers are like that, they use the full water you put in. I have a Sage (Breville) PB and I just have a jug next to it that I use to fill it up. Just add only as much water as you intend to make, same as when adding coffee

I've had my Breville Precision for a couple of years now. Choosing the "gold" option is very good, but you also have the option to create and save your own settings for water temp, bloom time, and brew time. I've only started tinkering with those settings along with grind size with my Breville Grinder and I have absolutely noticed an improvement by going beyond the default settings. This brewer can be a simple one button push if you just want fast and easy every morning, but you can also play around with things to dial in exactly what you want.

When brewing single cup (or low volume up to the single cup line) the machine asks you to remove the carafe lid. It will always do the steep method at those volumes, you cannot override that. You can still leave the carafe and lid but the machine still does the steep cycle so results will not be great. The Sage Luxe and PB are great set and forget brewers. They do not allow for the minutia of control that an Aiden or similar will give you. If that's why you are looking for it might be better to look at other machines.

Lol, yeah, I suppose I was exaggerating a bit. Anyways, that's beside the point - I don't think it would be worth the money for OP to buy an Aiden if he has a poor quality grinder and isn't buying good beans. That was the main thing I was trying to say. I've owned an Oxo 8-cup, Breville Precision and my dad owns an Aiden so I've tried that now too and they are absolutely fantastic, although my favorite is still a pour over. None of those would be as good without good grinders, though.

I have the Breville Precision brewer, it works great but the heating pad looks like shit. The non-stick coating or whatever is it wore out and now I have to clean it or it will get rusty. Before that I had a $20 coffee maker and the coffee the Breville makes is so much better. I just wish they would've made their heating pad better quality.

I have the Breville and to be honest, with I went with the Moccomastrt with an insulated carafe. The design of Brevilles is a pain to clean and often has a fusty old coffee taste if you if you don't submerge the lid in cleaning liquid. From a fine calibration setting point of view, yes it was all fun when I first got it but for the last 5 years or so I've only ever used the gold setting. I am a fairly high user though, probably used everyday except when we go on holiday. Min 1 litre a day, and most working days I brew 2 of them.

If you're in the US, go find a local TJ Maxx or Marshall's. They typically have Breville Precision Brewers for on sale for $179. I actually got one for $89 recently. Any of those on your list will be perfectly fine though. I like the OXO stuff for the money, but if you can wait on a moccamaster sale you'd be in good shape. It's not my favorite brewer at MSRP (I much prefer the Breville precision, the Ratio 6, and the Fellow Aiden-all of which I've owned), but if you can get it around $200 it's great.

The Aiden might be overkill -- sounds like the thing you want is a good drip coffee maker with a clock. The "clock" part isn't the expensive thing (you can get a Mr Coffee thing with a clock for $30), it's the "good". Tbh I'd buy a decent one second hand. I've used the Behmor Brazen and Oxo 9 cup, and recently switched to the Breville Precision (all second hand), and can vouch for all of them, tho I really do like the Precision the best. And all are cheaper than the Aiden.

Same but called Breville Precision Brewer in the states. This has been my daily driver drip maker for the last 3.5 years. I prep the night before, use spring water, \~69 grams coffee to 1200ml water at the "8-cup cone max" fill line and "Gold" setting. It has several options to customize under "My Brew" including bloom time, temp, flow rate, etc. I don't have a problem with the coffee not being hot enough, but I haven't checked the temps with a thermometer. I usually can't drink it right after pouring from the carafe and a little milk cools it to the right temp for me. My minor gripe is cleaning the thermal carafe. It gets quite a layer of old coffee and scrubbing, vinegar, coffee cleaning tablets haven't worked well. And the cap seems to trap a dribble of coffee as well. I'll probably have to get a replacement carafe eventually.

We've been using a Breville Precision Brewer for several years. Everyday we make a single "maximum capacity" cone drip pot. Love the timer. Set it up each night and wake up to a hot pot of coffee every morning. We have hard water, so I use filtered water, #4 cone filter (I like the moccamaster brand filters) on the Gold setting. I've brewed to the flat bottom/basket size pot. Per your other comment vs the Moccamaster, I \*do\* have to pull the Breville out from under the cabinet to fill the water. It hasn't been a big deal. And yes, the thermal carafe and the lid specifically is a little difficult to clean but a few rinses every night when setting it up. I periodically deep clean the carafe/lid, run the descale setting on the machine and remove/clean the shower head. Overall, I think the build quality is great and quality of coffee is consistently good. I am very happy with the purchase. James did a video on the Breville/Sage a while ago. The design hasn't changed: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfkdkZRv6Mc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfkdkZRv6Mc)

It depends what you want: If you want to tweak and maybe hit maximal bean flavor expression w/ said tweability, probably a fellow aiden. If you want a no fuss tank that'll last forever - Moccamaster If you want a few basic features but nothing crazy that'll also be very durable - Sage/Breville brewer

If you can squeak out a few more dollars (or find it on sale) check out the Breville Lux Brewer. I have the Precision brewer for 5 years or so and its been outstanding and I would recommend except it does not have a removeable reservoir (I wish it did!). Looks like the Lux Brewer has the same functionality but has the removeable reservoir. I dont know if it can do single cups without using the carafe, but its completely capable of making single cup qtys because thats pretty much all I use it for. It has a bunch of other cool features like cold brew, pour over adapter, and things like that. Its programmable to whatever recipe you want but I almost always use the default gold setting. It makes great coffee provided you use good beans, grind, water quality, and so forth. There are cheaper ones, but this is the one that I would go for as it uses an insulated carafe instead of a warmer plate. Durable. I have averaged 3 brew cycles per day for 2 years with the Breville, and it is still going strong, although I have very soft water. I mostly use the Gold setting as well, and then occasionally tweak the grind size. The one flaw is the flat bottom brewing. The showerhead simply will not wet all the grounds evenly. For 1 up to 8 cups with the cone filter, it makes consistent excellent coffee. As to the carafe, I rinse the lid out in both directions with hot tap water after every brew, occasionally with some dish soap added if washing the carafe with that, and I have not had to disassemble it to clean yet.

Other people have pitched in with their replies (and as always the main ones are the Moccamaster and the Sage/Breville PB) but one thing to add is to go for one with a thermal carafe. Forget the glass carafes with the heating plates. Thermal carafes are such a better experience and convenience unless you want to keep your coffee for more than 4-5 hours

I saw this machine live at the amsterdam coffe festival I've been using the precision brewer for a decade daily. Couple of questions from my side - can it still make cold brew? That setting that would slowly release cold water over the night - does it have an automatic start do it can start brewing let say at 6am -is it compatible with thr v60 adapter that thr precision brewer had -can it saved the settings of pre infusion and temperature like "my brew" so next time you don't need to re add thr settings evey time -there is no longer a glass version with heatplate right? And finally is this replacing the precision brewer or is it to be sold next to it?

I've had the Breville for 3.5 years, and have no idea if the company stands behind it. It just makes coffee every day, gets cleaned occasionally, and keeps making more great coffee. The lid of the carafe can be a little annoying and get stuck in the depressed position sometimes, which is easy to correct, but that's the only complaint I have.

I picked up a lightly used Breville Precision Brewer for ~100CAD, after using a chemex and V60 for 15 years. I tend to dial in the temp/flow rate/bloom time, which is a nice level of control. I'm not sure if I'm missing out on the profile control that I'd get from a Fellow Aiden. I think it's a great compromise (especially if you can pick up a used one for cheap), because I'll still break out my V60 or Hario Switch for the *good* stuff on weekends.

Yo mate, I have had the sage or Breville precision brewer since last easter and it is amazing with temp control and single cup brewing. For my first machine it is amazing and it can brew 1.8l (idk in ounces or cups). It is currently on sale in the UK with some stores selling it for less than 200 quid. I would recommend getting a good grinder with the rest of the money as it allows you to spend more on the grinder.

If you're using a good machine and grinder there's really no quality difference whatsoever once you're dialed in. Drip and pour over are conceptually the same thing, it's just a matter of if you wanna do it yourself or not. I make pour overs for smaller weekend or evening cups, batch/drip for mornings before work to save time and brew larger cups. Using a Fellow Aiden currently, which has been great but also have the Breville Precision (also great) and have had the Ratio 6 and Moccamaster previously.
