I have a Coway AP-1019C room unit and I love it. The unit itself isn't 'smart', but it's on a smart plug and automated with an awair air quality monitor. On power-on, it automatically goes onto 'auto' mode and it's been great

So I'm an American living in France the country where smoking in apartments is normalized. Our downstairs neighbours; a 70+ retired woman and her 50+ son/husband ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ not sure what he is to her are chain smokers and the apartment complex is 100+ years old but refurbished. The cig fumes were infiltrating through every porous crack a build can have, cracks from shared walls, gaps between side panel and floor, the hardwood floor, the vents for the pipes of water heater, plumbing and stairwell. For our needs (and the reasons should match your needs as well) I decided on going for multiple air purifiers for our two bedroom apartment so that all areas of the home were covered vs one really big one. Look at the suggestion list of what to look for in specs of the air purifier and see which are most important for you. These specs below are what I wanted in my air purifier. * **True HEPA (H13 or H14)** — must capture fine construction dust (PM2.5, PM10), cement, silica, and urban pollution. * **High CADR rating** — sized correctly for each room; don’t undersize. * **Strong pre-filter** — washable or easily replaceable to catch heavy dust and extend HEPA life. * **Activated carbon filter (thick, high weight)** — for traffic fumes, VOCs, and construction odors. * **Sealed filtration system** — no air bypass around filters. * **Room-specific units** — one purifier per room; avoid relying on a single central unit. * **High airflow / multiple fan speeds** — to handle constant particulate load. * **Air quality sensor + auto mode** — to respond immediately to pollution spikes. * **Quiet operation at high throughput** — especially for bedrooms. * **Readily available replacement filters** — frequent changes will be necessary in dusty areas. * **Energy-efficient continuous operation** — designed to run 24/7. * **No ionizer or ozone generation** — avoid added indoor pollutants. I first bought the [Rowenta Intense Pure Air Connect XL](https://www.amazon.fr/-/en/dp/B078XXGMVV?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_3&th=1)for $170 (wouldn't recommend) then I went with three [Coway Air Mega 150's ](https://www.amazon.com/Coway-Airmega-150C-Purifier-White/dp/B0899GYD96?sr=8-3)and paid $150 each for them. The reason I don't recommend Rowenta is because the fan settings were not controllable in the linear sense. The four modes were Daylight (It auto regulates how fast or slow the purifier fan spins based on what it detects in the air), Night (Keeps fans as quiet as possible with the occasional spin up based on what it detects), Silent (Spins the fan as slow as possible mainly used during sleeping and similar to Night mode), Boost (Maximum fan speed at all times). Also, the sensor unit for the quality of air on this purifier has always maintained "dangerous pollution levels" the entirety of owning it and after having bought the Coway purifiers after, we concluded the sensor on this one being somewhat inaccurate. It was nice being able to control the purifier via app which was a headache in its own right but now is irrelevant because we have all the purifiers running 24/7. I recommend the Coway and am happy with the purchase due to keeping the purifiers running 24/7 uses 6 watts of power each on Speed 1. The sound the purifier makes is more than tolerable as it's a gentle hum. The Pre-filter is extremely easy to take out and clean. It came with Activated Carbon Filter (A must for us in regards to filtering the cig fume smell). It doesn't leak dust from the sides of the purifier and the purifiers match our house decor which doesn't hurt. We went with the color white. And buying a filter change for them is $50 each which is in line with standard filter costs and you can go cheaper if needed via third party and non activated carbon filter. Finally, the sensors on the purifier have all been consistently accurate in detecting a change in air quality across all three devices. The review unit came with Impregnated carbon fabric and not activated carbon which it seems will be different depending on where you buy the machine. Mine in France came with activated carbon but other markets might have something different. Hope this helps and this took a lot longer to write up than expected. Both of these would require a dehumidifier. Air purifiers will only remove *airborne* mold spores/fragments or dust mite allergens. Purifiers can remove airborne pollen, although large pollen grains will not be captured with the same efficiency. Unfortunately you have to pay more money for quiet operation. For rooms measured in meters, Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) should be 4 to 6 times the room's volume (in m^(3)) where health conditions or allergies are an issue. Let's assume you have a 2.4 meters high ceiling. 20 m^(2) × 2.4 m = 48 m^(3) room volume. You would need CADRs of 192 - 288 m^(3)/h. Options include the [Coway Horizon air purifier (AP-1019C)](https://www.coway.co.th/th/products/ap-1019c) and the [Philips PureProtect Mini 900 Series (AC0950/10)](https://www.philips.co.th/c-p/AC0950_10/pureprotect-mini-900-series). I would prefer the Coway as it has a separate permanent pre-filter. This makes cleaning coarse particulates easier. But replacement filters are probably more expensive than Philips' filters. Keep in mind the CADRs listed for purifiers apply to the highest airflow speed/setting only. Lower settings have lower CADRs which reduces cleaning effectiveness.

r/AirPurifiers • Air purifier recommendations? ->Hey The Coway Airmega 150 is a solid unit, but it only has a CADR of 234 m³/h. For a 4.8 ACH, it's perfect for your room, but only if you run it at full speed. If you want to target a lower ACH, go for it, since most probably you won't run it on max speed. What I generally recommend is buying something way more powerful than what you need. Here's why: Purifiers with higher CADR than what you need mean you can run them on lower speeds to achieve the same CADR of a smaller one. This results in less noise, less mechanical stress on the purifier, and a longer life of the fans and longer filter lifespan. (The filter lifespan of ~1 year is calculated in a room suitable for the purifier. If you get a bigger purifier for a smaller room and run it on low speeds aka night mode or speed 1 instead of a normal usage you'll get more life out of the filter as well which translates to less frequent filter changes so $$ saved as well in the longer run) As per what I recommend, I would say go for at least a 350-400 m³/h CADR unit that provides a good noise level (look at both sleep mode and turbo noise) and power consumption. I am personally using a Philips PureProtect 3200 in my room (same room size as yours), but only because I caught it on sale for $206 usd. Since it has a whopping CADR of 520 m³/h my purifier is never leaving the sleep mode setting, and I can barely hear it. And for that CADR it is quieter on both sleep mode (15 dB vs 20 dB) and turbo ( 47.5 dB vs 48.3 dB) than an Airmega 150 while outputting 2.22x the performance of the Coway unit. Plus app support and temperature + humidity sensors if you like the extra stuff. This is the type of deal you want to be looking for. See what's up for sale in your country.

Maintenance and cleaning are very minimal. Cost is about $150-200, although there are larger units based on how big of an area you need to filter. We are very happy with them! Whichever purifier you choose, I highly recommend you look into one with a replaceable HEPA filter. Other filtration methods just won't give the same results.

I also have a larger one at home (250?) that is EXTREMELY loud, so I wouldn't recommend a big one. The building I teach in is pretty modern, so I have to assume that the ventilation is quite good even though my classroom doesn't have any exterior windows. I've been told many times I'm quiet/soft spoken (despite feeling like I'm always yelling), so masking while teaching is out of the question for me. I also tell my students on the first day of class that I am immunocompromised and therefore that if I do get sick, I am likely to get very sick and be gone for several weeks (sometimes I include the fact that my body literally cannot make antibodies, which is super fun). This info seems to stick with them, as I've had many students email me to let me know they're sick and staying home because they remembered what I said. I am also pleasantly surprised that most students wear a mask for a few days when they return. I never mention masks at all and have never asked for anyone to wear them, fwiw. I also have a couple bottles of hand sanitizer in the room and use it very, very frequently (literally any time I touch a shared surface). I follow the same precautions in my office. I've had COVID three times, and two of the three times it was during the summer (I don't teach summers). The third time I'm 99% sure I got it at a concert. Your mileage may vary, but I feel like my strategies work fine for me and at the very least give me peace of mind.

I'm a therapist and work in an 8'x10' room talking to people for an hour 5-6 hours some days. I think the BlueAir is a big reason why I haven't picked up any of the respiratory stuff some clients have come in with (well, that + vaccines + mindful hand washing/sanitizing). It's also pretty quiet which is important to me. I'm planning on picking up another BlueAir or two for the rest of my house this spring. The pricepoint is kinder than my Coway, and it's much quieter.

They say the filters should last a year, but we have it constantly running in a larger room and probably change the filters every 3-6 months. Closer to 3 when we have the AC wall unit on blast thru the summer. We've also had terrible Smokey days from the Canadian wildfires in my area and when I last replaced my filter, it was almost black so it was working hard! 2 years of having it and no issues.

I can't say I have any empirical evidence of their efficacy, but I'm glad I have them. If you have a couple hundred bucks and no central air, I think it's worth it.
