Insta360 - ONE RS 1-Inch 360 Edition

I have a 13 as main and either an action 4 or insta 360 as handlebar.

DJI Osmo Action 5, GoPro hero 11 or higher, or my personal favorite, an Insta360 One RS. The One RS is cool because it can do traditional action camera shots but also can do 360 footage if you get the right bundle.

I'm a Photographer who recently got into videos. I have to point out that the Insta 360 video quality is nowhere like the mirrorless cameras I've had, BUT, it's really about the spontaneous moment captured with it and not the quality that I'm impressed of. I've found footages of myself in the moments of serendipity that I know I will never achieve with any of my mirrorless camera unless somebody is following me around with it. I also tried the Osmo Pocket but I certainly love the convenience of the Insta 360 more because you can choose which frame, back, front, up or down you want to finally edit for posting. Really helpful the 360 view.

In theory, osmo would give you a better result as its sensors are bigger. By bigger, i mean the useful and exploitable surface of the sensors. So it should receive more light and result in a less noisy quality. That's the theory. In the real life, in a "very low light" conditions, Insta360 One RS 1inch is giving me better results than my X5. Pure Video mode is not very compatible with club lighting, that's better to use a manual settings with limited ISO for instance. DJI is promising a quality comparable to a 1inch sensor. I need to see it to believe it. but if that's true, Osmo would be your best bet, added to the fact you'll probably have a better result shooting in DLog 10bit, too. That said, if you're not in a hurry, I'd wait for the first results people will share in the next weeks.

tl;dr: Look for something with a big sensor like the Insta360 1 RS. Details... If you want to know a bit about cameras that might help pick something (assuming you might not be a camera nerd): the graininess in low light is because the sensor in the camera (the thing that literally captures the image) isn't getting enough light, so it does some signal processing to boost the dark image it does get to make a picture for you. Same idea as when you try to up the gain on a low quality audio signal and the noise boosts. The thing that controls how much light the camera gets it the aperture and the sensor - so, if you want high quality low light footage, you need a camera with a bigger aperture and a bigger sensor. Tough part - small action cameras have small sensors and small aperture (literally they're just physically smaller)... so they're always working without much signal in low light. Thus, even the good ones are going to be a bit grainy. iPhones have pretty good algorithms for boosting the low light signal, so they work better, but never as good as a full-size camera. I've got a Nikon D3400 - an older DSLR camera - and shooting video on it with a big aperture lens is miles better than any action camera I've seen. I've set it up on a tripod for booth footage before. Definitely more involved than using an action camera though. So I think it comes down to how professional you need this to be. Most action cameras are going to be better at recovering a decent picture from a low light signal, but it's always going to suffer a bit from garbage in - garbage out because the aperture and sensor are so small. Despite what their marketing says :)

I have the one rs, and I like it, but is getting quite old. Quality wise is steps behind the x3 and even more the x4/x5. DJI released this month the Osmo 360 in that format with much better quality, and the GoPro max 2 should be coming out very soon.

I have to suggest the 360 cams. Based on what you want it for. Its really the perfect tool to capture quick moments. Not having to frame the shot, being able to just put it on a tripod and let it run knowing it will capture everything is a huge factor. Imagine wanting to take a quick group shot or video. U don't even need to make sure everyone is in frame. Just press the shutter. Now if u want to do like a baby FPV or have your kid hold it then yeah the nano or go ultra If not 360 cam all the way. Insta360 specifically for the editing in the app. Reframing in post edit is not that difficult once you get the hang of it.

You want an insta360 camera for snowboarding. IMO, it's best to have the 360 video and be able to create clips from that. Those cameras are very durable and have available lens covers in case you're really falling a lot. You can even use a selfie stick and get a drone like video.

I was looking at that camera for a bit, eventually went with one of their 360 cameras (since a recent update, I've found the app incredibly unstable for viewing / editing such footage, but it was good before then) but I'm assuming when you say you just pop it out from one mount to another, that means you find the magnets strong enough for it to stay put? I always assumed magnets wouldn't be strong enough for mounting such things to bikes, hence e.g, MagSafe handlebar mounts not really being a thing.

I have both and a one inch one rs. The video quality of the 4 is tangibly better than the 3. Is it better in daylight under your use case? Maybe not much. The removeable lens covers are well worth it though. Any 360 camera will have protruding lenses and thus be more fragile. Do not expect GoPro durability. Also do some thinking about how you mount your camera. Motorcycles have a lot of vibration which tends to loosen bolts. Also the forces from the motorcycle are amplified down a stick which acts as a lever. There are many stories of people who lost their cameras off the back of a motorcycle. Even the motorcycle kit insta360 sells tends to break. It's definitely doable but I would use mounting solutions from professional video companies rather than anything from insta360 or Amazon.

I changed back to medium sharpness with PureVideo 8K on X5 - the noise level remains under control. Yes, for the mid to low light condition, X5 videos look better than the RS 1 inch, especially when the camera is moving. I should mention that I watch the videos on my normal size iPad Air, and I do sometimes stick my face into the screen to look for issues. PureVideo does take the sharpness away slightly as a drawback. Under good light condition, I still feel RS 1 inch video looks better with less noise. I have read about people saying using PureVideo under good light condition could cause the video to lose details - but I am going to give it a try anyways.

Dji action 5 pro is miles ahead of rest, insta one is good for dark, otherwise...dji really is best. I bought one and its literally 3 hours of recording and they gave me 3 batteries with case for them :) Edit: its more than 3 hours at 1080p 30fps

Personally I prefer my Insta360 RS One, which has a similar form factor and offers a wide angle lens like GoPro as well as a dual lens 360-degree option. I also prefer the DJI action camera over the GoPro. My main issue with GoPros is that intend to use them outdoors in a hot climate and the overheating problems with GoPros is a major issue for my usage.

360 cam for sure. U can use AI tools provided in the app to keep u in frame with a click of a button. With the 360 cam, U do not have to worry if u are in frame or not. Audio quality is good too.

If I am a DJ and need stationary 4k live streaming, I use the insta360 1" instead. Its low light is better. Dun believe the 8k nonsense, sensor size wins.

I got my X4 a month ago before my 2-week trip. I also own the One RS 1 inch. To be honest, having to toggle settings to deal with different lighting conditions in hopes of getting slightly better quality videos is annoying, unrealistic and in most cases, pointless. I don't know how often someone is going to be under "perfect lighting condition" - I don't. I don't expect any cameras to do great under low light, but at the very least, it needs to perform admirably under cloudy weather or reasonably lit indoors. By admirably I mean little to no grainy areas. If I were you I would return the X4 right away. I will be able to test the X5 tonight when I get home, but even if it turns out not a big improvement from the RS 1 inch, there is no reason to keep the X4 around. I bought my X4 from Costco - it seems I should have a 90-day timeframe to return it - and I am going to try to do it.

Insta 360RS all the way. The one that has a similar form factor to the GoPro IMO

Thanks for the reply. I did some video capturing of indoor and evening lighting outdoor using the X5 and the RS 1 inch, and viewed the videos on my iPad. I still find the RS 1 inch videos nicer to look at. For the X5 I went with 5.7K and 60fps with H.265 encoding. The grainy/noise is still too distracting to look at. Perhaps I should try the lowest setting for sharpness on the X5... I don't know what else I could do to make the video of X5 better. Long story short, the 8K feels like a gimmick at the moment. I notice the iPad app has some nice improvements and it enhances the video of either camera. Update: I found the PureVideo mode, and gave it a try. I also set the sharpness to low - and that I think does make a huge difference regarding noise of the image. It seems I could even try 8K instead of 5.7K with PureVideo, which I will try next because right now the video is a bit blurry. Update 2: PureVideo mode 8K is the way to go for indoor medium to low light. Definitely low sharpness for every lighting level for me going forward.

I like insta360 because they still have PC editing software. Gopro trys to force you into a subscription cloud model and mobile only software. Plus the last gopro I had did chaptering and made editing longer videos super annoying.

Yeah, who knows if GoPro will ever bring out an update to their 360 cam at this point. Their 360 is ancient af. My old Insta360 R (not even the RS) was already better than the GoPro 360, and even that model isn't anywhere near as good as the X3. Yet I still keep seeing YouTubers compare GoPro 360 footage to modern 360 cameras, and I honestly don't get why at this point.

A few adds. The X4 vs One RS 360, I have both, obviously the 1 inch is better in low light, and I think it has a slightly better video but I use the X4 now as it's lighter. Also, I got rid of all of my non 360 cameras long ago and absolutely love 360, even if the best on the market still has lots of flaws

I'd suggest you to get the Action 4. Better vfm. Can get the action 5 spare batteries for better battery life (if needed). Insta 360 is doing different ball game. It's an awesome secondary camera but not a good primary one.

I went with the RS One for the form factor. Quality wise, it's okay. It isn't cinema quality but it splices much more seamless than the GoPro 360. And it does have an interchangeable lens if you just want front facing. I haven't tried that lens yet, as I really like being able to catch my opening on vid. I've got it on a snag free mount from adrenaline workshop. I have a buddy using the x5 on a Mohawk mount. But something about the positioning of the two lens being pointed to the left/right causes a weird center merge effect of things right in front of you. If that makes any sense? Like...it makes your head/face look squished together. Like your eyeballs are touching lol I'm not a camera person so idk how to explain it. Some new stuff from dji and go pro is coming out so those could be good options too.

All that said, the 1 RS isn't for everyone. If you want to just push a button and go, the others are good at that. The RS is a little finicky, but there's a lot of fun creative options with it

Except for safari, GP13 is very good A good alternative could also be a 360 camera, especially for things like cage shark diving. I personally think Insta360 is better than GoPro for 3d cams

I've got way more than 2😂. Sony A7iv for professional work and photography X100v and an EDC photography camera Pocket 3 for vlogging Insta 360 one RS for POV angle A few backup cameras/ B-cams A few film cameras. Everyone's use case is different so find the gear that works for you.

I wouldn't say that. I have a 360 camera and I don't want a unicorn mount. I feel like that would get in the way so much, plus it looks ridiculous. Actually, nobody at my DZ has a unicorn mount on their 360 cam. Nothing wrong with the one rs and a mount from adrenaline workshop.

I just mean no upgrades/new cameras from them until they get it together. I got the OneRS because it's exactly what I wanted(360 and regular), I had no clue about all their hot mess stuff until after I already got into the brand. But they get no more of my money until they stop behaving like a fly by night Amazon company.

Coming from a gopro HD hero 1 (2010-2011) I was in the market for a 360 camera. Insta one rs was the only one that you could assemble as a 360 or a standard 4k camera, so I've gone with it. But even if I was coming from an ancient camera, there were a lot of things that I preferred the gopro way.. If there was a modular camera from gopro I would have gone with them no doubt.

Agree on this. I had file corruption during video recording on insta360 one RS 1 inch until I switched to Sandisk Extreme Pro, the problem is almost non-existence since. Got an X4 for a recent trip using a 1TB Sandisk Extreme Pro, zero issues with recording. Video quality, on the other hand, leaves a lot to be desired.

Most gopros are prety nice underwater. If dont force 4k no overheating problem at all. I tried my insta360 one rs underwater, that is a nightmare. Why dont u borrow few different cameras a decide yourself?

If u want to vlog n need a good low light performances than go for Action 5 pro. DJI wireless mic system can be easily paired with Action 5. Please don't go for any GoPro. DJI n Insta360 r far ahead of it interms of technology n features. If u want versatility than go for Insta 360. Also wait for few days. Amazon freedom sale will be coming. U can get better deals on both if cameras.

Use your phone! Everything else is either expensive or not worth it especially in low light. Alot of DJs are using 360 cameras now as it can capture both audience reaction and your moves. The latest insta360 one is good in low-light but it's expensive. Maybe you can justify it with some of your other hobbies too.

no, this is bad advice. The RS and the RS1 inch Leica both perform worse in low light than the current generation that have the pure video night modes. I know because I own the RS, the RSOne, the Ace Pro 2 and the X5. It is a software trick on the new cameras that make them look so good.

For sure I ride daily but I don't even have a chin mount I use an insta360 with a pole mount. It's probably still better to have one of these than nothing at all is what I'm getting at.
