Unpopular opinion maybe, but gopro puts out great quality underwater footage. It depends what you're using it for and what you want to film though. I'd encourage you to go look up recent gopro 4k underwater footage and you'd be surprised how crisp and sharp the images are, even without additional lights or gear. If you're looking for close up macro shots it's not the best (although it can still take great stills or you can also simply extract a still from 4k footage). I can't count the number of times I've seen people commenting on amazing shots here and asking what camera was used, only to be surprised that it was actually just a still frame from a gopro video. Is it the best for making professional quality prints or video? Probably not. Does it put out great quality non-professional video for a vacation diver? Absolutely. If you're okay with the quality of iphone videos, you'll likely be okay with the quality of gopro videos. The most important thing if you're filming video is image stabilization, which gopro is best of class at for non-professionals. There's nothing worse than shaky cam footage underwater and it's really good at producing smooth footage even for beginners. If you want to up your gopro game, you can still do it on a budget by adding a good tray (don't buy a handle) and two lights. I use a backscatter tray with 2x Orcatorch D710Vs. It's very decent and hard to beat at the price range. Sky's the limit on price if you want to look at more premium options. The best part is that I can fit it all in a regular sized backpack, which is something you can't do with nearly any other underwater camera options. I'm, also not worried about it getting banged around as they're built like tanks. Lastly there's a huge market of used gopros too if you really want to buy something on a budget.

A GoPro 7 or 8 then. I don't recommend less know action cameras brands like Akaso, not terrible but not great either. Sound quality is really bad and the image stabilization performance is inferior compared to the GoPro or the DJI Action cameras.

I have a Hero 7 Silver and a Hero 10 Black I bought last weekend. I used the 10 to make a running video yesterday and I can't believe how much better the stabilization is. It's an amazing camera so I'd say that's my favorite.

Within reason, whatever you've got. I had a GoPro 7 for years and took that thing around the world. It never let me down. We've now upgraded to DJI Action 5s. They're great, but not *that* much better. Horizon leveling is great and all, but the 7 still took good video.

It's simple to me. GoPro Hero cameras are a huge PITA to use. They're horribly unreliable and nowadays DJI/Insta look just as good. It's been like this since at least Hero 10. They have done nothing to fix the Hero line and continue to push out a new model every year. It's corporate greed and it's killing the company. I've spent a lot of money on GoPro gear only to be burned by them over and over again. I go out of my way to recommend against GoPro any time some asks. I will give credit where it's due though. The MAX 360 has been a great camera for me. I don't have any of the issues that are so abundant on Hero cameras. It's the only GoPro product I've had a good experience with but I still can't recommend it because of the culture at GoPro. I know if anything comes up that requires them to lift a finger to fix, it will remain broken forever while they work on the next yearly model release.

Get whichever Go Pro is in your price range. Anything Hero 7 and above will have hypersmooth and as long as you're not running it at max resolution and fps it shouldn't overheat, especially with a fan or AC on in the car. 30 fps would be my recommendation, and most should be able to handle that at 4K just fine.

I have a GoPro. I'm not big into filming (I'm more of a photo person). But I've used it to film hikes and I think it works well. I have a harness that I wear but there are other options. The fact that it's waterproof takes away the "what if it rains" worry that I always have with my cameras.

I've been using every GoPro since gopro 7 (first release of the hyper smooth) up until 12. With 12 I've used it with the max lens mod. Couple months ago I got the DJI action 5 and I am very happy with it. I haven't used the fov lens for DJI though Features that GoPro is better - * Color quality under good lighting - you just can't beat GoPro with this no matter what. Go Pro looks incredible under good lighting. But with MTB, especially during the summer when all leaves are out, that's not exactly the situation always * Resolution - kinda similar as the first point but it does have 5.2k vs dji 4k. Not sure if that matters much to you * Stabilization - this is very minor but the GoPro stabilization is more natural but osmo Action 5 is still very good * App requirement - for DJI, you have to activate your camera with their app to use it. With go pro, no registration is necessary to use it. To some people that's a deal breaker What I like about DJI - * Battery life - even with GoPro Enduro batteries, I was getting maybe an hour with my settings. DJI battery is literally lasting me 1.5 hr with one single battery. I only carry one extra battery with me now. * D-Log M color / LUT - if you are into grading color this helps a lot. I shoot using their log settings, and apply LUT available online and it is like 90% close to what I want the color to be. * App - I've also used insta360 x3 and insta360 go 3 as well. Out of all apps I used, DJI one was the best one. Its so quick to grab a short footage out and post it on social Media. And you can even apply that color grading through the app directly if recorded with D-Log * Magnet mount - I record vertical videos frequently for short forms. It works great with switching the ratio or even quickly changing settings. Also super easy to put it on like a selfie stick or a tripod * Wind noise - I used to put a little dead cat on GoPro to reduce wind noise. The problem was that I couldn't use GoPro for any under water activity like that. I wasn't gonna keep on peeling it off and put a new one on every time. I wasn't a fan of the big foam around it either. I got the DJI mini mic with it and it pretty much eliminated all wind noise. Its amazing and now I can easily use the camera under water. * Software stability - I used to lose footage all the time because video gets corrupted during the recording and find out when I'm home. So I got into the habit of stopping recording every time I stop on the trail to reduce this corruption. With DJI action, I haven't had any corrupted videos and I just let it record all the time * Filename - it could be minor, but GoPro file name sucks. DJIs file name way more sense * Price - I got the package that comes with the 2 extra battery, battery charger, stick, for like $360. DM me if you have any specific questions

I've got a 7 and an 11. Any of them will really work though. If you're getting used I would avoid the 8 if I remember right you can not remove the lens if it breaks. The 7 and I remember correctly the 9 and up you can remove the lens cover if it breaks and replace it with a new one. Also many ways to get cheaper items for a GoPro. A brand called telesin normally found on Amazon is a great cheap option for pretty much everything including batteries.

I've tried to defend GorPro for so long as they do have the best daylight footage and best log profile. I've owned the Hero 3, 5, 7, 10 and now the 12. The 3, 5, 7 and 10 I was happy with. But it's getting indefensible now, with no Hero 14 out this year I am every chance to jump to DJI if the action 6 is good enough. Still using the GP2 processor is a joke, it came out with the H10, it's so far out of date. Low light hasn't usually been a concern to me as much, hence never making the switch to the competition. But it does pop up on occassions in thick forest or tree coverage, basically anything other than direct sunlight, so I am starting to notice how poor it is. On top of that the screens, lack of fast charge, slow boot times for "quick capture" ... I bought the Osmo 360 and am glad, I think the overall experience is better than that with GoPro and the footage is better than anything Insta360 has ever made which is always oversaturated and over sharpened trash. Maybe I'll switch back for Max 3 in 5 years time, maybe it will have a new processor, larger sensor and better editing software by then.

Honestly your post is very true for a GoPro 3 or 4... But my 7 was already pretty good underwater. My current Gopro 12 takes pretty damned awesome pictures, especially in RAW if you know how to use lightroom. Here's a shot of some coral I took 2 weeks ago in Cozumel, with a cheap dive housing, no lights, no colour filters, depth around 12-13 meters. https://preview.redd.it/zmyqua5alcxe1.jpeg?width=5568&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f83d23930d7b42670167f727219e85e67975a7c Even on simple jpg mode, in lineair lens, the pictures are more than decent

If you get a used GoPro, Hero 5 has image stabilization, but not at 4K resolution and it was marginally effective. Hero 6 has image stabilization at 4K, but it didn't work very well on all axis. Hero 7 and later finally have functional "HyperSmooth" image stabilization on all resolutions and all axis.

I have Gopro 3/7/9 and an Insta360 X3 and probably picking up an Ace Pro 2 as well. Gopro has been surpassed by the others in tech, stability, menus, recording formats and pricing. What happened was that GP got so into releasing a new camera every year but they were failing to address long standing issues...overheating, file corruption and only recently did they get the ability to shoot in LOG color profile. I am not counting them out by any means, but if they don't start rethinking their strategy they won't stand for very long because the wolves are nipping at their heals. Edit: The others also have a better phone app that simply connect every time without issue when you need them to, I can't say the same for my experience with Gopro.

I have a Pocket 1 & 2 and GoPro 7, 10 and Recently Osmo Action 5. I shoot a lot of chest mount first person video and the action cameras work better for me for a couple of reason. I get better bump stabilization from the action cams ( up down when walking), I can quickly change batteries, and it's more durable when I want to stow or deploy it. I can wear the GoPro Chesty mount over a undershirt and under a button down shirt and easily attach and detach the camera when I am ready to film.

I treat my cameras as true action cams - almost everything I shoot is downhill-mountain-bike POV (with some snowboarding stuff in the winter). My two kids and I rotate between two GoPro Hero 7s and a Hero 11, and in bright daytime conditions the footage is consistently crisp. I also own an Insta360 One X2 and X4; they're great for occasional 360-degree shots (especially when we're filming the kids in the snowboard terrain park), but their image quality still lags behind the GoPros in the daylight settings we ride, in my opinion. Lots of sponsored "reviews" frame these cameras as vlogging rigs, which shifts the conversation toward low-light performance and front-facing features. That's useful if you're shooting downtown at midnight, but for daytime action sports I'd rather see companies double down on ruggedness, stabilization, and ease of use than chase vlogging use cases. Bottom line: today's action cams are all solid, yet GoPro remains my default. I'm still curious about the DJI Osmo Action 5, though. I'd like to see whether DJI can match the reliability I've come to expect from their drones.

I got a DJI action cam 5 and kind of regret it. The widest view is not wide enough when chin mounted. The quality is fantastic, and it easily pairs with the DJI wireless mic so you can pick up the motor without any wind. But its widest POV is really narrow. I miss the super wide view of my Hero 7, and might just go back to that and sell the DJI.

For video I use my GoPro without lights then run it through the dive+ app. Sometimes I use my tg6 if I need to zoom, but for the most part, video = GoPro. If you check out my posts from around March to June of this year, and a year before that around the same time, you can see various shots with both devices. Actually, I'll just link a sample of a few of them below. Regarding your friend, without seeing the video, I can't really comment... But most of my GoPro video are natural light. I use a strobe that has a guideline, but it's not powerful enough for a video work. Not unless it's super small critters. If you usually shoot video, yeah, I would go with something like a GoPro, DJI osmo, or insta 360. I haven't really seen many videos shot on an iPhone underwater, but of the few that I have, I do remember the quality being pretty good.. so if I had to answer, I would say that you could pick either/or. Although one of the benefits of the GoPro in my opinion is that you can throw it on some pair of cord with a bolt snap, and then just clip it off to a d-ring when it's not being used. That's how mine is set up, so I don't have to think about it. Here's what it looks like: https://imgur.com/a/yclKbMG One of the drawbacks to GoPro is that you can't really do much in terms of optical zoom - whereas with a iPhone, you can. So an iPhone would definitely be more versatile if you're going to do stuff like small seahorses and also large manta rays. GoPros generally are best for wide angle videos, not small stuff. Edit: GoPro 7 with dive+ processing: https://www.reddit.com/r/scuba/s/fGUw8MIpaT Tg6 video with dive+ processing: https://www.reddit.com/r/scuba/s/Xvj8FEWy4o Tg6 macro photos with mf2 strobe: https://www.reddit.com/r/nudibranch/s/iSzO8AJhEu Tg6 small critters with some macro + mf2 strobe: https://www.reddit.com/r/scuba/s/PlQgpBBuyP

Any of them will work. I'd look for a cheap one on something like Facebook marketplace. You can normally find them for a better price than new from GoPro. If you do get a new one I'd just get the cheapest one you can get. The thing you'll have to do is keep the video settings as low as possible. If not you'll kill batteries because of the heat. Don't worry about letting your kid run around with it like some will say. My 5 year old would run around with one of the two I have. They will take a beating. Just as long as they don't actively use it as a hammer.

I use a GoPro 7 silver in a 3d printed seat post mount. I set it on time lapse to preserve the battery and it has lasted about 9.5 hours for me, enough for my longest ride. The frequency is enough to catch details of cars, although my state no longer requires front mounted licence plates on cars so it's a bit less useful. Even a dummy GoPro with a blinking red light would help keep people in their best behavior.

I had a 9. It was good when new, but I found out a common problem was the sound quality fell off with age. The built-in background noise rendering stopped and sometimes everything would be quiet and still not be able to hear me talk or it would all be loud. For action video shots, it'll be fine, but if you're talking, it could be a challenge. I now have ten. So far, so good. I really miss my 7. It was simple and very effective until I destroyed it by accident. Every GoPro since then has managed to fail me.

I've had a GoPro Hero 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, and 10, as well as the Max. I've go over 2,000 skydives with GoPros on my helmet, including world records and jumps into the Blue Hole in Belize. I've taken them to every continent (including Antarctica) for running and scuba diving and overall travel. So I use GoPros a lot, and I use them in environments that are pretty tough on them. One thing that's been annoying is the heavy push to GoPro subscription. Their cloud storage is just awful. The money is better spent on something like Dropbox or Box. Their software has been pretty terrible too. Hardware wise, they've been hit or miss. Sometimes it's software, sometimes it's hardware. They can corrupt video files, do a weird "gets hot after charging and locks up so that you have to pull the batteries", they can stop mid recording. All of that with the proper recommended cards. Some have just been lemons, probably a bad solder or heatsink contact. Sometimes it's fixed in a firmware upgrade. They're notorious in the skydiving community. "Did you get it?" "No, it stopped recording 5 seconds in." "It froze up". That kind of thing. Not all the time, not even frequent, but enough that it's annoying. And each model seems to have their own little quirks. My Hero 7 and 10 has been solid for the most part. My 9.. not as much. My Max is a piece of shit. My next 360 camera will absolutely not be a Max, and probably won't be whatever they come out with next. My next action camera probably won't be a GoPro.

Many videos shown on YouTube are from the launch periods and are sponsored. Especially the DJI Action 5 was pushed pretty hard in my opinion. But they all make great videos. If you want low light performance I wouldn't go the gopro way. But in good light conditions I'd say the gopro still has the crown. For me the killer features though are 5.3k 8:7 and Gopro Labs which adds features no other action cam even comes close to. Those all help a lot for editing.

An iPhone 17 pro would be far, far better than a GoPro. GoPro is intended to be an action camera, meaning it's great for video. It *absolutely sucks* for still photography, especially smaller stuff or macro. I will note that if you plan on using your iPhone, please make sure that you have AppleCare+, or a separate rider on your homeowner/renter's insurance. Given a long enough timeline, every housing fails. All it can take is a piece of your hair falling on the seal as you close it to end up with a flooded case and totally ruined phone. Last, always back your phone up before you go diving (or at least, before your trip, assuming that you're OK with the possibility of losing anything added that isn't also in the cloud since your last backup). Oh yeah, and have a game plan for how you will communicate if your phone does flood - for example, bring along an unlocked older gen iPhone to use until you can get yours replaced. As others have mentioned, you need a light source if you want to have the best results. The fact that you have a new phone doesn't change that. As you descend further underwater, certain colors (like red) gradually disappear - that's just physics for you.. a new phone won't magically add that red back into the water. So yes, if you plan on shooting ambient light photos deeper than snorkeling depth, you'll need a light source or red filter. Or an app like dive+ to do post processing in. If you have the money, I'd recommend a used Olympus tg6 and backscatter mf2 strobe for macro and small critters. Pt059 housing. It's the best combination of quality and affordability.

Just get whatever is on sale right now for cyber monday or older cheap/used options. I wouldn't go older than GoPro 7. The 7 is decent, the 8 is quite good. So just find the best model for the lowest price. The best alternative for a teenager is an insta360 model, such as the standard ace model. But they are awkwardly hard to find. May be easier to just get the ace pro or ace pro 2 on sale. Another option is the DJI Action, but those cameras are arguably best for tinkerers who want to use settings to get the best image quality possible (at the cost of getting the settings wrong and getting a terrible image). It comes more so from the legitimate camera world and the drone flying world. But if you find one for cheap, you can consider it. I would just suggest a used GoPro or a new Insta360 ace on sale. I wouldn't recommend the newer GoPros, though they are decent. So depends on sales. But GoPro has been surpassed in features (by insta360) and image quality (by DJI action). Only reason to get GoPro would be if you like their walled garden of apps and stuff, but I don't even use those. source; long time gopro user, my GF bought an insta360 ace and i basically steal her camera every time I ride solo. It's just so much more reliable.
